Pause For Thought - Orble Support

February 25th 2011 23:24
Those of you who started to read my regular posts about Making Money Blogging a few weeks ago will have noticed the abrupt end to my posts and nothing new for a week or two. You may be thinking that I'm another "have a go" blogger who's disappeared after a few posts.

Well, the reason for the delay is I'm waiting to see if Orble is still supported, because I don't want to put time and effort into developing a blog on a platform that is unsupported and could disappear overnight. I've emailed support with no reply and have an unmoderated question on the Writer's Forum (no new posts since November I notice) so I'm just holding fire until I know it's worthwhile carrying on

Building Popularity, Building Links

February 7th 2011 19:55
Some time ago, way back in the development of the Internet (well at least a few years ago), the technicians at Google responsible for developing their search engine came up with the idea that "good" or "important" websites would have lots of links to them; inbound links that is, from other websites. So the technicians decided to build this into the algorithm, or the software in simpler language, that decides which sites appear at or near the top of any particular search on Google.

Nothing wrong with that in principle - well established sites will attract lots of inbound links over time. But of course it immediately opened the door to link building by site owners who wanted their website to appear more popular than it really was, in order to get to the top of the search results. So link building has more or less become an essential part of any webmaster's strategy, including those who want to make money blogging

Blogs Are Not What They Used To Be

February 4th 2011 09:34
As the blogging culture has developed, many different styles of blog have appeared on the internet. When blogs first appeared, the vast majority were online diaries, or regular journals written and published by people who, for whatever reason, wanted to share their thoughts and feelings on a regular basis. That's how we ended up with the term “blog” - it's a shortened form of “web log”.

Some of the early bogs were, and lets face it some still are, pretty boring reading; do we really want to know what “Mr or Mrs Average” has been doing in his or her every day, slightly mundane life. Perhaps not. That said, reading the online journal of a supposed celebrity, sportsperson or politician on a regular basis could be interesting if it gave some insight into aspects of their life normally shielded from the public gaze

Get Rich Quick - Best Avoided!

February 2nd 2011 10:12
Those of you who have read a few of my posts may have realised that I'm not a fan of the get rich quick gurus and the schemes they sell to frustrated newcomers. Perhaps there was a time when I believed that there was a “magic bullet”; a super software programme or a training programme available on the internet that would enable me to take a few simple steps, almost on autopilot, and reap the rewards a few days or weeks later. But I have concluded, like many before me, and no doubt many after me, that it takes time to make money on the internet.

Some years ago I think it was a little easier to make money on the internet. There was less competition and greater rewards which meant that it could all be done more quickly. In fact I remember the first serious website I ever built; hand coded in HTML from scratch, to review radio control cars. It took me three days to get the essential pages together, complete with affiliate links, and nobody was no more surprised than me when after a few days somebody ordered a radio control car costing several hundred dollars and suddenly I had thirty dollars commission coming in my direction. But as I say, there were less websites competing and now it seems to take longer for websites to reach, and more importantly stay, on page one of Google, or the other search engines

Introduction To Adsense Keywords

February 1st 2011 07:25
One of the most popular ways to get started making money blogging is by using Adsense. After applying to Google for an Adsense account and setting it up on your blog, text and image adverts appear on your pages. When readers click the adverts you get paid a share of the advertising fee. If you've set up your blog on your own host you will have to a fair amount of setting up to do for Adsense, but if you choose to start out by creating a blog on a site such as Orble, where this blog is hosted, much of the work is done for you and it's easier to focus on writing.

Adsense revenue is only a few cents for the majority of clicks, so you need large numbers of visitors to make money. But your Adsense profits will improve if you can choose the right keywords to maximise your Adsense earnings. In fact, it is possible that if you have done everything else you can to improve your Adsense profits, and are still only earning a few cents a day, that you are targeting the wrong keywords

Blogging - How's Your Time Management?

January 31st 2011 08:29
How's your time management? Or perhaps I should ask you about your personal organisation? Do you stick to your daily plan? Or your weekly plan? Do you even have a plan for what you want to get done in a week, or a day, or a month? I'm sorry about all these questions but it's my belief that if you're serious about making money blogging, or if you're serious about being your own boss in any field of self-employment, you need to have a plan.

When I worked for somebody else, much of the time my workload (what I did) and my diary (when I did it) were determined by other people. There were priorities set by senior management and middle management; and priorities set by customers who wanted certain things doing by a certain date. There were very few priorities set by me. I wasn't in charge of my destiny and other people decided almost all of what I did on a daily basis

Getting Started - Choosing A Blog Host

January 30th 2011 06:44
If you're looking to start making money blogging, sooner rather than later you are going to have to decide whch “platform” to use for your blog. What does that mean? Well you're going to decide which software you're going to use to display your finely crafted words on the internet and, where on the internet your blog is going to be hosted; physically on which computer or server your blog is going to be available for your readers. My apologies if this is all very basic for the more experienced of you, but I just want to start with the basics for the beginners.

When it comes to blogging software, few would disagree that Wordpress, rightly or wrongly, now seems to be the first choice for most people. I've got no statistics to back this up and no doubt there are readers already screaming “No I use xxxxx for my blog”. That's fine. But I want to focus on Wordpress initially

Patience Needed to Make Money

January 29th 2011 08:27
I browse quite a few forums each day just looking to see what topics are being discussed related to making money blogging. I hasten to add that I don't contribute much to these forums because I just don't have the time. I might answer a short question here and there, but it's just so easy to lose hours each day reading forums when that precious time could be spent creatively writing and posting to blogs.

One of the questions that comes up time and time again concerns monetisation - hate that word, especially as we spell it differently around the world - or how to make money in simple language. And there are frequent questions from beginners about Adsense applications and rejections. Followed by yet more questions about the lack of Adsense earnings and the frustration involved

How To Write Quickly and Effectively

January 28th 2011 09:10
The process of writing posts on a regular basis is a real challenge to many new bloggers. Driven by the desire, or sometimes the necessity to make money online, the pressure is on to produce acceptable quality posts in a reasonable time scale. If you are in the fortunate situation where you have enough time to really enjoy the process, and you're writing about a hobby you love, then you may not feel the pressue. But for some of us, for whom this is more of a job, effective writing is the key to productivity and ultimately success.

I realised some time ago that one of my biggest challenges was that I think about what I want to write far quicker than I can type. I'm not a trained typist and if I try to type my thoughts correctly first time, my hands cannot keep up with my brain and I lose my way. I start a sentence and by the time I'm half way through it, I can't remember what I was trying to say because I'm trying to type accurately. I just can't keep up
