Let's have a little look at my fave model of the minute, Brittish sensation Agyness Deyn.
You've probably seen her in any of last season's shows, with her cropped bleached hair, she's hard to miss.
Born Laura Hollins near Manchester, England, 21-year old Deyn is well on her way to become a full-blown It-girl.

Backstage at Stella McCartney

Apart from her distinct and quirky looks, she also has an effortless, rock-inspired look (ala Kate Moss) that continues to keep her in the best dressed pages.
According to last month's Vogue, she also started a trend among models during last season's European shows of customising Converse sneakers with felt pens. Oh Agyness, you crazy cat!

What else do you need to know about this ridiculously cool gal? She's 5ft 8in, very skinny and has very little hair, which as a fellow cropped blonde, I'm all for! She walked for everyone who's anyone at the latest round of shows including Stella McCartney, Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier and Versace, and has appeared on the cover of at least 2 US Vogues.

Walking for Versace

So go out, chop your hair off, get your hands on some peroxide and feel the Deyn-love.
Or not. That's fine too.

Trend Alert: Enviro-Chic

June 19th 2007 08:45
As you are all no doubt aware, global warming and conservation are hot topics at the moment.

You can't open a magazine without some socially-responsible celeb showing off their latest hybrid car/motorbike/submarine. It is not surprising then, that such an important and highly debated topic has had some effect on fashion.

And what period was more passionate about environmentalism than the 1960s (and to a lesser extent 70s). This spring/summer, pack away your structured monochrome mod pieces and break out the high-waisted flares, platform shoes, fringed vests and long layers.

Designers such as Karen Walker have released a line of flares, which have been championed by style icons such as Chloe Sevigny (see below).
Personally I'm not sold on the idea of flared jeans, but they'll be someone's cup of tea

Chloe Sevigny - one of the first of the fashion set to embrace her inner flower power

Another popular manifestiation of this inspiration are the pleathor of platform shoes that have been popping up throughout recent shows, and are a perfect companion to this season's rising hemlines (though, if you're tall like me, you might want to give them a miss, lest you look like a giantess).

Chloe Platforms - hot, hot, hot

Some designers are more naturally inclined to this decade; think Emilio Pucci and Missoni for vivid prints and shift dresses, perfect with big round sunnies and platform shoes.

Pucci Dresses

Also look out for organic fabrics and cottons used by designers such as Stella McCartney

Personally, I prefer tailored pieces and the slim-line pants and high-waisted skirts that are about this winter. However, come spring, when the sun comes out and the flowers are blooming, perhaps I will feel the urge to make a daisy chain and sway to the tunes of Hendrix.

Psychadellic man...

Designer Threads for Less

May 28th 2007 03:44
Over the weekend I uncovered what may be the greatest discovery of my shopping life to date. And excuse me if this is old news for you, but I'll bet there's a bunch of you that have never heard of them.

It's called the Seventh Avenue Market (SAM). They have events (both VIP and public) in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. It is the self-professed "ultimate sample sale", and as far as I can tell, they may be right.

Including massively reduced stock from Australian designers such as sass & bide, Willow, Scanlan & Theodore, Marnie Skillings, LifewithBird and Camilla, these sales are an absolute must for fashionistas on a budget.

The great thing about SAM is that it's as close to current season stock as you can get on sale, especially with sass & bide skinny jeans (for $50!!!) which are a staple and don't vary too much season-to-season.

To give you a bit of an idea about the exact level of awesomeness, I went to the invitation-only day on Friday and bought 2 pairs of sass & bide jeans, a sass & bide tee, a sass & bide vest and a Manning Cartell dress, all for $230!!! That's almost how much you'd expect to pay for a single pair of full priced sass & bide jeans!

To be included to invite-only events, all you need do is go to here and register to receive email invitations.

The best way to buy Aussie designers, such as the wonderful Marnie Skillings

Sorry about being so lax with the posting. Uni's becoming totally insane.

Anway, a while ago I wrote about my style icons, but today while trawling through my usual fashion news, I came across a picture of a celebrity that made me realise just how badly some people get it wrong

Beauty and Fashion Tips that Work

May 10th 2007 06:56
I was going through my mammoth collection of magazines the other day (and I really do mean mammoth, several years’ worth of Cosmos, Vogues and Marie Claires), looking at all the “tips” and “advice” they offer and thinking about how few of them actually seem to work. I mean, who really wants to wash their hair in beer/egg whites/your own urine (ok, I may have made that last one up…).

But occasionally you get a suggestion that makes sense, doesn’t cost much or take up too much time, and most importantly, works! So here is my list of top 10 tips that work

Fashion Week Wrap Up

May 8th 2007 05:22
I apologise for being so slack and not posting on the last two days of fashion week, I became overrun with my new job (at Saba, for those playing at home) and Uni work.

So here is my brief summary of Thursday and Friday as well as some general thoughts

My favourite show today was fashion stalwarts, Zimmerman with their “Hard Luck LA” Spring Summer collection.

As Nicky Zimmerman told news.com.au, this collection was all about bold prints and colour, which is a breath of fresh air amongst this season's sea of greys and blacks

Structure is Back!

May 1st 2007 12:32
Kirrily Johnston appeared at Australian Fashion Week today with an inspiring show of structured feminine pieces in exciting hues.

Waists were the star, as Johnston showcased high-waisted skirts and pants, as well as thick waist belts on breezy dresses

on What's on your wish list?

Not very original, but the Marc Jacobs Stam bag is on my wish list.
Those futurist skinny pants from Balenciaga a season ago are also on it.
And some Chanel sunnies.
And a pair of Jimmy Choos.
And some Marc Jacobs bow flats to go with the stam bag.
Oh the lists go on and on...

Yeah, I have to agree with Bryn, I read this blog to see fashion not naked Hollywood starlets.
Can we get back to the clothes, please?

I really liked V for Vendetta!
And in general I love Natalie. She's simply the most beautiful women on the planet.

I agree, she is daring, but sometime's she needs to pull it back.
She's the type of star who either looks fantastic or terrible.

Interesting post.
However, your picture of 'the cocoon skirt' doesn't appear to be working.
The bubble skirt rose to popularity in the 80s, I believe. And I have to say, I've seen it really work. It depends on the person, but if you're one of those people who can channel the 80s, it can look ridiculously cool. Not in a classic or elegant sense, but very funky.
I hesitate to write off any single piece of clothing, because there are almost always ways to wear things that works. It's all about thinking outside the square.

on I love Marc Jacobs

It's such a hot collection, I love the splashes of plum and yellow that offset the monochrome pallet.

Great post, well done!

Wong Kar Wai is such a beautiful director, I can't wait to see this!
Btw, that last photo of Natalie Portman is not from Blueberry Nights, it's from Closer, directed by Mike Nichols, released in 2004. It's the scene where Portman is a stripper and gives Clive Owen a lap dance.

on Lindsay Lohan

May 17th 2007 05:38
Just for the record, Harry, Lindsay doesn't have a twin sister, she played both the roles in Parent Trap. Ah the wonders of modern technology.

Also, I would disagree with your classification of Lindsay's Queen t-shirt as boho. The term boho usually refers to hippie and/or gypsy inspired pieces (e.g. long tired skirts, embroided kaftans, layers of beads). I'd say she was going more rock chick or vintage here.

But, hey, I guess we all classify things differently, eh?

Haha, I totally agree. And they should be fined if they wear it badly, just like driving! Irresponsible application of the high waist - $500.
