Newcastle 5 - 1 Sunderland

October 31st 2010 18:25
Kevin Nolan scored a hat-trick as Newcastle thrashed 10-man Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby.

Nolan opened the scoring with an overhead flick before tapping in a second from Andy Carroll's effort.

Shola Ameobi added a third from the spot after Nedum Onuoha had tripped Jonas Gutierrez before Titus Bramble was sent off for bringing down Carroll.

Ameobi then volleyed in his second and Nolan headed in his third before Darren Bent smashed in a late consolation.

And that is all it was - a consolation. Sunderland were second best, but what will hurt them more is they were a clear second best at the ground of their arch-rivals.

Newcastle's formula was simple - get the ball wide and deliver into the big men.

These big men were Carroll and Ameobi, 6ft-plus players who are both good in the air and nimble on the deck.

They gave Sunderland an almighty workout with Nolan reaping the rewards from their good work in the first half.

The effervescent midfielder may lack pace but more than makes up for it with guile and cunning in the box.

The former Bolton man's first strike came from an Ameobi nod-down from Barton's corner. With his back to goal, Nolan flicked the ball over his head and past the reach of goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and the three defenders on the line.

His second came after good work from Ameobi who drove forward before finding Gutierrez.

The Argentine's strike was blocked but the ball fell to Carroll whose scissor-kick arrived at the feet of Nolan around the six-yard area, who calmly slotted in.

Despite carrying a two-goal lead Newcastle looked leggy at the back against a pacy Sunderland attack containing Danny Welbeck and Bent, who were joined at 2-0 by Asamoah Gyan.

And early on, Welbeck did test the backline when he broke from a Newcastle corner but was brilliantly tackled by full-back Danny Simpson just as he was about to strike.

The Black Cats actually looked better after the break but by then they were 3-0 down following Ameobi's penalty before the break and Bramble's sending-off.

The latter could be judged as unfortunate as card-happy Phil Dowd, who showed nine yellows and a red, was eager to give the former Magpie his marching orders after he chopped down Carroll who was approaching the area from a wide position.

Sunderland's horrific Halloween was not over, as Simpson delivered a looping ball from the right for Carroll to crash on to the bar with his head.

Ameobi was first to the loose ball and smashed in the rebound - it was a goal similar in vein to the one Alan Shearer scored in the 1996 5-0 win over Manchester United, when he followed up Les Ferdinand's effort.

Nolan, who looked a little bit peeved when Ameobi took the penalty, finally grabbed his hat-trick when a corner swung from the right was headed on by Ameobi and flicked in by the midfielder.

Bent scored a late goal when he volleyed in from a corner, but he celebrated his strike with barely a smile.

Chris Hughton's job as Newcastle manager was reported to be under pressure earlier in the week before the club released a statement stating they would discuss terms of a new deal with him.

After that performance, a new contract is surely a no-brainer.

Man Utd 2 - 0 Tottenham

October 30th 2010 22:40
Nani scored a controversial second goal as Manchester United continued their fine record against Tottenham.

Tottenham keeper Heurelho Gomes rolled the ball out for a free-kick after Nani had clearly handled the ball but the United player had not been penalised.

Nani then struck the ball into an empty net, much to the Spurs players' fury.

Nemanja Vidic had earlier headed home a free-kick from Nani, who also hit the woodwork, as United extended their unbeaten run against Spurs to 26 games.

Tottenham's last win at Old Trafford remains the 1-0 victory in December 1989, when Gary Lineker struck the winner.

Spurs, who stay fifth in the table but are now 10 points behind leaders Chelsea, have not kept a clean sheet in the league since the opening day of the season.

And, even more worryingly, the influential Rafael Van der Vaart limped off with a tight hamstring in the latter stages.

But there was plenty to encourage manager Harry Redknapp as he tries to mould a team capable of challenging for the title.

Tottenham did play plenty of attractive football - with Van der Vaart striking the woodwork - and more than matched United for long periods of the contest.

The home team have been wasteful at times this season, dropping six points from winning positions, including a 2-2 draw against West Brom after leading 2-0.

But after Nani's controversial goal was allowed to stand by referee Mark Clattenburg in the final minutes, United were able to close out the game with relative ease and remain third in the table, five points behind Chelsea.

United might have taken the lead inside two minutes when a crisp long-range strike from Ji-Sung Park smashed into the base of the post with Gomes well beaten.

Tottenham responded and Van der Vaart, who frequently dropped deep and found space in dangerous areas, crashed his thunderous left-foot strike against the United woodwork after eight minutes.

Edwin van der Sar turned 40 on Friday but there was nothing wrong with his reflexes as he stopped a powerful strike from Luka Modric, while Van der Vaart missed with another effort from distance.

Robbie Keane made his second Premier League start of the season for Spurs as Peter Crouch dropped to the bench, and with Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon out wide, the visiting team were extremely mobile across their front line.

However, for all their attractive attacking football, Tottenham often lacked a killer final ball, while United did occasionally prise open their opponents' defence.

Park shot wide after cutting inside, Rafael da Silva ended a surging run with a poor finish, and Gomes kept out a low strike from former Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov, who has now gone six games without scoring.

But for all that there was to admire from both sides, the opening goal came via Vidic's thudding header after Spurs completely failed to pick up the defender as Nani swung in a free-kick from a wide area.

Bale had a relatively quiet match but did catch the eye with one electric run into the United area 10 minutes after the restart before shooting narrowly wide.

Spurs continued to create some promising positions but it was becoming increasingly evident that they were missing the extra option that a target man would provide, and Roman Pavlyuchenko replaced Keane after 61 minutes.

The substitute struck the side netting from 20 yards and Van der Sar denied Van der Vaart as the London side continued to press.

Javier Hernandez went close for United, while Nani thought he should have been awarded a penalty seconds before he scored his controversial goal.

The Portugal international fell in the box and appealed for a spot-kick but, despite clearly handling the ball as he went down, he was not penalised by Clattenburg.

Gomes obviously thought differently and rolled the ball out as though his team had been given a free-kick, and he was punished when Nani slotted the ball home as the bewildered Spurs keeper looked on.

Arguments ensued, first between the United players and the assistant referee when it appeared he had ruled out the goal, and then between the Tottenham players and Clattenburg when the referee overruled his colleague.

Play eventually resumed, but with only six minutes remaining there was too little time for Tottenham to recover a two-goal deficit.

Arsenal 1 - 0 West Ham

October 30th 2010 20:26
Alex Song headed an 88th-minute winner as Arsenal snatched a dramatic victory to keep West Ham bottom of the table.

The visitors looked on course for a hard-earned point thanks to a string of outstanding saves from Robert Green.

He reacted brilliantly to repel a Cesc Fabregas shot in the first half and later thwarted Theo Walcott and Fabregas for the second time.

Samir Nasri hit the bar and Walcott the post before Song nodded in Gael Clichy's cross to seal the points.

The result keeps Arsenal second in the Premier League, five points behind leaders Chelsea, while West Ham stay 20th, cut three points adrift of any other team after Wolves shocked Manchester City.

Arsene Wenger's side looked to have hit a brick wall as Green and the tireless Hammers defence saw off attack after attack in the second half.

But their pressure eventually told thanks to Song's late intervention and Wenger's men can head into Wednesday's Champions League game at Shakhtar Donetsk in high spirits.

West Ham must now regroup ahead of their trip to Birmingham next Saturday and, despite this demoralising late defeat, they deserve plenty of credit for a resilient display.

Both sides arrived off the back of morale-boosting victories in the Carling Cup, but a return to league action brought with it a reminder of the current disparity between the two clubs.

While financially-sound Arsenal appear well set to launch a sustained challenge for the Premier League title, cash-strapped West Ham have struggled badly in Avram Grant's first season at the helm.

Having collecting just six points from their first nine matches, midfielder Valon Behrami had admitted his side were taking to the field "a little bit scared" - and a lack of belief was apparent in the early stages as they struggled to make it out of their own half.

The busy Andrey Arshavin shot wide after a flowing move and it took a superb challenge from Danny Gabbidon to deny Nasri, whose corner was then headed over by Song.

West Ham did well to emerge from the opening quarter unscathed and they soon settled into a tidy rhythm, looking dangerous from both set-pieces and on the counter-attack.

Free-kicks by Mark Noble and Victor Obinna caused trouble, Frederic Piquionne squandered a promising opening after surging in from the right and Arsenal had to be alert following Obinna's run and cross from the left.

The Gunners carved out the best chance of the first half when Song and Bacary Sagna combined to tee up Fabregas, but Green showed quick reaction to save the Spaniard's curling effort with an athletic dive to his right.

Arsenal were not at their fluent best but still carved out chances and Green did well to thwart Song and Sebastien Squillaci before the break.

There was a greater sense of urgency about the hosts after half-time and Nasri rattled the woodwork with a 35-yard free-kick to set the tone.

West Ham were working hard to keep their opponents at bay but Nasri, Fabregas and Arshavin began to station themselves higher up the pitch in support of lone-striker Marouane Chamakh and Walcott came on for Denilson as Arsenal went all out for the win.

Chamakh glanced an Arshavin free-kick straight at Green before Walcott latched on to Fabregas's sublime through-ball and watched his low strike come come back off a post.

West Ham once again had Green to thank for a one-handed save from Fabregas and, with time ticking, Wenger introduced Nicklas Bendtner in place of Arshavin.

Arsenal continued to press and it eventually paid off as Song rushed on to Clichy's floated ball in from the left and won the match with a close-range header.

Andres Iniesta struck a dramatic winner late in extra time to give Spain World Cup glory for the first time but condemned the Netherlands to their third defeat in a final.
Iniesta drilled his right-foot strike across goal - but the Dutch were incensed after referee Howard Webb had failed to award their side a corner moments earlier when a free-kick took a sizeable deflection off Cesc Fabregas.
However, Euro 2008 champions Spain, who conceded only two goals during the tournament, deserved their victory after gradually taking a grip on a tense and bad-tempered contest that produced 14 yellow cards with Johnny Heitinga sent off on 109 minutes after picking up a second yellow card
