Sitting in the cinema waiting for a film to start, there’s nothing I like more than watching trailers for what’s to come. Even reading a magazine or walking down the street, I enjoy seeing the billboard and paper advertising luring me to go to the cinema - and step inside the world that those directors have created. However, of late I have experienced far too much disappointment in that respect and it lead me to question: What exactly is going on with the marketing for film and cinema?!

A trailer has always been a sure-fire way to draw people in to see your movie. Whether it’s a teaser trailer doing the viral rounds, an extended trailer in the cinema, or one cut down for television; their purpose is to get as many people to come see the film as possible. Of course with a bigger budget film, there’s more room to have longer trailers – or just ones shown more often. Something marketing executives seem to lack though is the “less is more” route. Yes an audience do want to see something funny, or scary, or action-packed to draw them in. Yes we do want it shown a fair few times to remind us that the film in question is the one we absolutely MUST see. But NO, we do not want to see the film’s best lines ruined, biggest jumps spoiled, or loads of different trailers - that if we put them together - make-up the entire film

What a brilliant read once again! I love when you compile lists like these - and now I have a full playlist of films to watch when I return from my holiday

To be honest I agree with your Romero stance on Day being the best of the series so far...it's my joint favourite with Night (I just can't chose!)

And thanks for the video with the behind the scenes footage on...I hadn't seen that before and I love watching things like that :]

I haven't seen this film yet...kinda been putting it off since I only hear mediocre or bad things about it :/

I know that Romero says he has ideas for at least two more DEAD films, and that he's expressed an interest in shooting them back-to-back - and that they would explore new ideas brought to the surface in this film. I personally wish he'd do something else, and only come back to this franchise if he had a vision SO epic that it must be brought to our screens (and done well).

I do want to watch this but purely so that I can know I've watched it and get it outta my system - not really for any idea of entertainment.

Thanks for the review though, yours is the most thorough and interesting one so far :]

on Cinema release review - "Heartbreaker"

August 5th 2010 16:43
Thank you for reading it, and I'm glad you enjoyed it :] I'm guessing the film is getting a nationwide release over there..? Or is it just specific cinemas showing it?

I read your stuff whenever I'm on here and really enjoy it too :]

Oh yeah...I get that. I haven't actually seen the trailer yet...so I'll give it a look. I find I like it when a trailer sets it up wrong sometimes, because then you're more surprised and impressed by the film.

The lead guy Romain Duris is pretty good - not the typical heart-throb like Will Smith. I really liked this film though, shame the cinema screen I saw it in wasn't quite so great for subtitled films..ahh well.

Ooo I saw this film a few months ago, before it was officially released over here in the UK. I thought actually it was a pretty good film (big thing for me - not really a rom-com girl), and was presented pretty well.

I have to correct you when you compare it to "Hitch" however, I don't think it's that similar at all - less Hollywood, a different premise and generally a stronger film. Only similarities really are charismatic characters, and the whole romantic comedy thing (although this film delivers more laughs I think).

If you're interested I reviewed it here so you can have a look and see what you think. Definately worth a watch either way :]

I think "Quarantine 2" will more than likely end up being a random DVD night watch for me...

We shall have to compare our thoughts when we've both seen "Rec 2"...

on Movie Review - "[Rec]"...

July 6th 2010 23:19
I think out of the plethora of english language/hollywood remakes, it definately tops them (or is nearly the top) for me. It still didn't wow me and some changes I didn't really get. I liked that there was a medical intern in "[Rec]", rather than a vet (is it?) in "Quarantine"; and the ending where it's just a starved dude up in the apartment who'd been working on some apocalypse virus, rather than some conspiracy involving the church in the Spanish version - I guess I felt that was a tad watered down (Not as bad as some remakes do it tho). It is a fairly decent film I guess...I think I much prefer "[Rec]"...even if the end did confuse me...

I missed out on seeing "[Rec] 2" at the cinema which annoys me a little since I now have to wait til September for the DVD. I know that it follows on from the events of the first one so I look forward to that. I'm not keen on the "Quarantine" sequel however which is supposedly taking place in an airport...? That doesn't sound like it's going to be any good really, and it disappoints me because Hollywood are capable of good horror films - they just don't pull them out of the bag too often. Will you go see it when it's out?

I've not seen "Jennifer's Body" I have to say - I have a slight Megan Fox allergy...althought it's from the woman who did "Juno" isn't it..? So maybe I should have a look.

The full title I think is "The Girl With The Red Riding Hood", and I agree that "The Company Of Wolves" is a great film. This new one is directed by Catherine Hardwicke ("Twilight"), and you're bang on with the werewolf thing. Amanda Seyfried is the main, Julie Christie is a knitting obsessed grandma, and Gary Oldman is a witch-hunting priest called Father Soloman. I'm sure I read who was going to be the wolf, but I forget his name

Basic story follows a series of bad things happening in Red’s medieval village caused by a terrifying werewolf...I'm intruiged but I'm not sure really what it's going to be like. At least we have a release date for it now :] Think you'll want to watch it when it's out, or would you want to know more first..?
