The fungi which are considered parasites are those that get their blood from living bodies of other plants or animals. Examples of these are blights, rusts and the various forms of rot on growing fruit.
Saprophytes are those fungi which get their food from the decaying remains of other plants and animals. Example of saprophytes are mushrooms, toadstools, and puffballs. Fungi do not contain green coloring matter ( chlorophyl), hence they cannot make their own food. This is the reason why fungi get their food from the living or dead bodies of other plants and animals.
