Old Cloths Never Die
When I was a teenager, I don't believe with the old folk that said 'old cloths is comforter than a brand new one'. Now I prove it by myself that it was true at some points
This is my underwear. It is one of the oldest collection of mine. When I start to use the cloth for the first time. I feel funny. Sometimes I have to scratch my back, coz I feel like something itchy. Those itchy things were not last for long. During the time, the cloths are getting fit to my body. The texture and the shape is fitted with my movement and body shape. There is no itchy things anymore.
Now, after almost 5 years from the first day I have worn it. I really comfort with it. Nothing could compare the comfortess of this cloth. Even the high quality fabrics made by famous cloths company. I have some famous logos on my other cloths, but still, it feels different with this oldies. The same feeling I've founded with other old cloths.
I rarely buy new cloths since I am very comfort with the old one. But this time, I think I have to buy a new pairs. The cloth’s condition is very bad. I couldn’t do anything to fix it. I also couldn’t give it to other people since there was many hole there. Maybe I have to let it rest after serving me for such a long time.
It is hard for me to let it goes, maybe I will use it a little longer, until the cloths are really got a big hole in the back. Ha3x..
Some people in some countries doesn’t get any feeling like mine. Its because they rarely use the same cloths for such a long time. Some even thrown it away after the first use. It is because the countries have a major benefits from its economy, then the price of the goods are more cheap than it was supposed to be. So, they could easily buy a new cloths in a second and don’t loose any significant amount of money.
Hmm, I don’t like to use one good without maximizing its use. I do love great products with long lasting life. So I could just buy one and use it all the time, until the goods are broken (and I couldn’t fix it anymore).
According to the Syar'I (life guidance is Islam), we must not let our own goods to be wasted without any significant contribution to the owners benefits or communities. Everything we have will be asked for their use in the next life. We will be asked about things like; where do you get those goods? In the right or wrong way? What do you do with that things? And else..
If some goods are left unused for a long time. It will passed away without any contribution. If I am not sure whether the goods will have any useful contribution for me, I prefer to choose not to buy it. Or else, I will buy it and lend/give it to other people who need those goods more than us. This way of life will avoid us from a consumerism. Avoiding consumerism lead us to save natural resources and let the balance between production and true consumption level. Remember that the more we buy something, the more garbage we produce. And those extra benefits the businessman have because the overproduction is not equal with those environmental damage we will have to face.
Every time I buy some product, I will asked myself. Is this product is really need to buy or it just my desire? That’s doesn’t mean I have to restrict myself not to buy any nice additional shoes or adding my book collections. I do buy some tertiary needs. I bought some cute little dolls or phone accessories. But I am not thrown it away in one or two days. I do have any additional personal goods, I have 4 shoes, I wear it according the condition. Sports and formal ceremony does need different shoes. That’s why. I bought it for a reason. I bought it for purpose.
There is no straight clues whether someone get in to “overbuy” (we called it Mubazir in Indonesia). Overbuy means that you buy something that not very useful for you, its like having a high end computer, but you only use it for typing MS Word application and playing music. Middle end computer is more suitable for you. The money you cost for the high end computer is much higher than middle end computer. If you buy the middle end computer, you could use the extra money to buy any other goods to increase your lives quality. Or else, you could just donate them to help poor people or environmental NGO. Just maximize the benefit of your own goods to you and communities.
The overbuy line is different for each person. For me, having a nice motorcycle is enough to help me go anywhere I need to go; I don’t need 10 MPV cars. But some people do need 10 MPV cars. I don’t really need Air Conditioner in my hot, tropical regions that sometimes get a 34-36 Celsius temperatures, I only need a little fan inside my bed. But for some subtropical people who arrive here, I think they really need the Air Conditioner at their house or office here.
So, I let you judge your own needs and decide whether you have passed the limit or not. It’s not a regulation, It’s not a strict policy. But it’s a choice. And everybody have the right to choose its own way of live. Whether you are protector or destructor (like the Transformer said), you are totally responsible for what you have done. And according to my beliefs, we have a final judgment day when our life ends. We all take a full responsible for any of our choice in our life.
