Being Lonely
October 11th 2006 00:59
I was pretty tired today after a long day of work touching up plans with Adobe Photoshop and when I reached home, TV was the last thing in my mind. Yet absent-mindedly I went over and pick up the remote control, and turned the satellite TV on, flipping through channels (as if my eyes aren’t tired enough from all the monitor staring) until I stopped at this animated series “Honey and Clover”.
This episode was talking about one of the main cast, Takemoto, who suddenly ran away after the celebration party for his new found job, taking his bicycle with him and started cycling aimlessly.
In the journey he sees different people, kind and sarcastic, old and young, and get to learn that camping out in Japan isn’t an easy thing to do. Many times he thought of ending the journey and turn back, yet the feeling of lost, jilted and afraid has drove himself to the state that he has to run away to find his true self again; leaving his friends and teacher behind feeling worried and wondered where he was.
Something stroke my mind to write this down when I saw the scene where the young and talented art student, Haku, commented to her uncle, Takemoto’s teacher, about how Takemoto is and would he feel lonely adventuring out there. The teacher answered, “Yes, I believe most of the time he will feel lonely, but it strikes you fast like an ocean’s wave, and it goes off from you as fast as it comes. These feeling always comes and goes easily whenever you are travelling alone.”
I believe the teacher was right. Sometimes even when we work hard all day round, returning home alone, repeating the same routine the next day, with occasional tea break with friends; we still get struck by loneliness once a while. Some of us might loose the feeling almost instantly, but some lingers. The rate of loneliness coming and going is more frequent and brief when you are busier; and it lingers a little longer and can drag your mood down if you allow the feeling overwhelm in your heart.
And how to overcome the loneliness? It is not by working hard, like the boy Takemoto, pedalling non-stop and having no idea where he will end up to, but by noticing things around you. When you go on with your daily life doing the best you can and notice the things and changes around you, you will feel less lonely and start to appreciate what life has to offer to you.
Of course, when noticing things around you doesn’t mean you don’t stay focus with your journey ahead, just like that boy who didn’t realise that his bicycle chain was so worn off that it broke while he was pedalling tirelessly and enjoying the sea side view.
