Liverpool gets Downing, Man Utd going for Ganso

July 19th 2011 13:30
Liverpool signs Steward Downing for a reported fee of £20m

According to BBC reports, the 26-year-old, who joined Villa from Middlesbrough for an initial fee of £10m in 2009, handed in a transfer request earlier this week. Downing, capped 27 times by England, has agreed a long-term deal at Anfield. Liverpool have also signed Jordan Henderson from Sunderland, Blackpool's Charlie Adam and Brazilian goalkeeper Alexander Doni during the close season.
Last week, Villa turned down the Reds' opening £15m bid and it was reported the clubs eventually settled on a fee of £20m. "It's a great feeling and I'm very happy to be here," Downing told Liverpool's website. "It's been a long time coming and I've had to wait a few weeks, but I'm really pleased to be here. "With the tradition, the manager and the players they have here, there was a big temptation to come and once I knew of their interest, there was only one place I wanted to go."
This is another Englishman being added to the English side in their quest to end the Premier League drought spell. The failure of Joe Cole, who was signed on a free transfer last season, to establish himself on the flanks, led to Manager Kenny Dalglish looking for a winger who would provide crosses to Striker Roy Caroll up front. Still, the transfer fee appears to be really huge if it is considered that S. Downing has not proved himself in a big club other than Middlesbrough and Aston villa.
Meanwhile, after their disastrous season, Aston Villa fans would be looking forward to bounce back but this may not be the case right now. Having lost keeper B. Friedel to Tottenham and on the verge of replacing him with S. Given, Aston Villa have lost both its two wingers this month after S. Downing signature to Liverpool and A. Young's transfer to Old Trafford earlier this month.
Everything said, Liverpool are still not considered at one of the main competitors for the forthcoming season but i do think that it would an under-estimation to do so. Bookmakers have chosen Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham as the main contenders for next season Premier League race. But considering that both Manchester United and Chelsea would be a bit distracted and tired as usual following those late night European football trips and Manchester City not yet Champions material, it leaves both Arsenal and Tottenham fighting to regain their past honours. Thus, Liverpool who are not in Europe for the first time in 12 years, may actually see it as a blessing in disguise and catch the chance to rip teams apart when Chelsea and Manchester United would only be draw following a tired European game on a Saturday afternoon kick-off. Beware of the Kops next season!!!
Downing began his career at Middlesbrough where he spent eight years before moving to Villa in 2009 for an initial fee of £10m rising to £12m depending on appearances. He won the first of his 27 England caps in a friendly against the Netherlands in 2005, when he came on as a second-half substitute. He has yet to score for the national side.

Other latest rumours concern Manchester United’s increased interest in Brazilian playmaker Ganso. Following their recent constant failures in landing neither W. Sneijder, nor S. Nasri and not even L. Modric, Manchester United have now turned their attention to one of the most promosing world class players in the world namely Ganso. The player who recently played for Brazil in the Copa America suffered much criticism following the 5 times world champions exit at the hands of Paraguay in the Quarter Final yesterday. The Englsih champions have still not found a proper replacement for P. Scholes and may be ready to splash out $50m for Ganso.
