BP Well May Be Sealed end of August - Gulf of Mexico

BP officials say they now expect to have the company's blown-out oil well in the Gulf of Mexico sealed top and bottom by the end of August.

The first part of the process, static kill or bullheading, is expected to begin Monday or Tuesday, The New York Times reports. It involves pumping mud to force oil and gas down and then sealing the well with cement.

While that is being done, workers will also be connecting the well to the first of two relief wells. That can be used to seal the well from the bottom, ensuring no leakage from the area around the center drilling pipe.more story

The numbers “are not frightening,” said Christopher Towe, the IMF’s deputy director of monetary and capital markets who directed the assessment. The review process was created in the wake of the Asian crisis, and the U.S. is the first major economy to undergo it since the global financial turmoil.
Christopher Towe, deputy director of monetary and capital markets at the International Monetary Fund, discusses the outlook for the U.S. financial system. The U.S. financial system remains fragile and banks subjected to additional economic stress might need as much as $76 billion in capital, according to the results of IMF stress tests. The findings, released today as part of a broader IMF report on the U.S. financial system, suggested that while the nation’s banking system is stable, it remains vulnerable.more story
