First Fruits

Lukey picking some silver beet for dinner.
Is there anything more satisfying than eating something you've grown from your own garden?

It seems to have taken forever but we bought a small above ground garden, filled it with sugar cane mulch and dirt and planted some veges.

Our garden is currently growing cucumbers, lettuce, spring onions, tomatoes, strawberries, silver beet, chilis and capsicum.

It's so exciting to see the flowers develop and the fruit to follow.

Luke has gotten involved too and helped me harvest some silver beet for dinner which we steamed with chicken fillets and chips.

It was just that little bit more delicious.

I've also picked a few lettuce leaves for salads and they have been delicious as well.

In separate pots (not shown) I am growing mint, onions, sage, oregano, chives, rosemary, parsley and thyme.

The Pool is in!!

Christening our new pool!
Good to his word the pool guy has installed the pool at the end of January, and not a day too soon.

Mapping out the pool area

In the most humid days we've had this January, we watched the pool take shape and be filled with water.

As soon as we were told we could have a swim, the cool change came through making it a chilly dip.

Sanding the bottom of the pool

That didn't deter us however, and while we hopefully get the filter installed tomorrow, we had a good splash.

The penultimate step, filling in the water

Next step will be fencing and landscaping as at the moment rather than blending into its surroundings the pool seems to have been dumped in the backyard, looking very raw indeed.

Fences and pools.

Starting to put the fence up
We have a fence and we also have a dirty big hole in the backyard where we plan to put the pool.

After selling our business, getting our tax back and generally being careful with dosh, we decided to go ahead with building the fence and preparing for the pool.

Funnily enough in summer, every pool builder we rang was busy!!! So it may not be until the end of January before we get a look in from these busy guys. It should be in by winter I'm guessing :\

Digging the pool begins.

Anyway, the fence is made from colour bond and matches our neighbour's fence. We have a defined backyard which means I can start getting into setting up vege gardens and compost heaps.

There is somewhat of a setback, however. As I type this, the weather forecast is predicting possible floods in our area.

Our pool hole has become a new eco-system for every wayward frog in the neighbourhood due to previous rains, but soon we are to be deluged.

As Mark said, if this is an overdue 20 year flood, better to have it now before the pool goes in and gardens are established.

Cane burning season

The beginning of the cane fire right behind our house
When your backyard lies right next to a cane field, at some point you will have a ring side seat to a large cane fire.

That's what happened to us this morning at 4am. All the neighbours were out on their balconies to share the fiery experience

The Letterbox Garden

Our letterbox garden
I know, it has been an AGE since I last wrote on this blog.

The priority of doing things around the house went low on the list when money had to go in other directions

Finally...a laundry chute

In preparation of the laundry chute
We've been in the house for over three months now and I am relieved to say that the laundry chute isfinally in.

After numerous trips down to the laundry with a heavily laden basket of dirty clothes, the chute is a very welcome addition to the house. One problem the builder noted was that there was a pipe and a joist in the way, so the hole would not be that big

Stormy Weather

The storm building up coming up from Grafton
I heard a frog this morning, which in itself is not big news. However, I was told somewhere that when you hear frogs, it usually means rain.

Sure enough, later in the day Mark happened to look out the window in the early afternoon to see a huge build up of clouds from the south. Like all good internet savvy wives I straight away jumped on the BOM (Bureau of Meteorology website for the uninitiated) to check out the radar

Pooling our resources

Our pool in waiting
I've recently been working for the paper in Casino and one day one of my co-workers took his thermometer outside and measured the temperature. 43 degrees in the shade!!

And it wasn't much cooler in Woodburn. Hence Mark's single minded determination to get a pool in the backyard as soon as possible. Council are going through our application and the pool is waiting patiently in many different boxes

Family History Wall

The beginnings of our family history wall. It's nice to give them a home.
For those who don't know, one of my favourite past-times is genealogy or family history. There's an unmatched excitement that comes over me when I look through old photos of family members long gone and read through detailed census records, old wills or birth, death and marriage certificates.

And it's pretty hard to beat when I discover some juicy detail within the annals of our history. The proverbial skeleton in the closet

Moving along....

Our front garden with the newly painted front door.
Yes, I know. It's been some time since I last wrote on my blog. And just because we've now moved in doesn't mean I want to stop as I've discovered there is even more to do.

There are still little bits our builder has to finish before we can honestly say the house is completely done...but not even counting that, there are other plans we have in the pipeline making this house a lifelong project
