Life of a Modern Day Moses
July 25th 2008 20:11
For years now the LDS church has been focusing on connecting faiths and building bridges to help affect our world for the cause and love of Jesus Christ. This is something that I am committed to and am passionate about, but what happens when neither side refuses to bend.
I have been in more than one situation where, rather than talk about how we can affect the world together for Christ, a Christian friend or acquaintance would rather argue about whether we believe in the same Jesus. Luckily we live in a nation where we are able to worship freely however we wish. We are also a nation that was founded on uniting many cultures and backgrounds with one voice. "One nation, under God", sound familiar? So why spend all this time arguing when we could be practicing what America is know for?
This week the Associated Press printed a story about the rift that has been created between Christians and Mormons because of doctrinal differences. I wont go into too huge of detail of the article because I would rather focus on the response by Elder Ballard. A quote (taken in context from the Deseret News) shows Ballard stating:
"We're not Catholic and we're not Protestant, but we are the New Testament Church that's been restored because we believe it was lost after the times of Christ and his apostles and was required to be restored through a prophet," he said. "Think in terms of Abraham and Moses . . . Joseph Smith to us is just the Moses of our day."
This is where I got inspiration for my thought for the day. I loved the fact that he refers to Joseph Smith as the Moses of our day. When you think about this it is so true. God took a boy who really had no idea what he was doing, had no abilities to start a million member church, and through the power of our heavenly father restored the Gospel.
I think of what it must have been to be like Moses. God chooses you to lead an entire people out of captivity...I just can't imagine what that would feel like to be ripped out of your comfort zone and have a call put on your life, that at the time of being called required skills and abilities that you just don't have.
I really believe that we are called to be like Joseph and Moses. Yes, we may not feel that we have the skills and abilities to lead a generation of people out of the captivity of hurt, pain, loneliness, sin, pornography, suicidal thoughts, and so much more...but that is when it is our heavenly father through his his authority empowers us to have the ability and the strength to move mountains or part the seas.
So are you ready? Are you ready to be the Moses or Joseph Smith of this day and our generation?
