Libertarians: Listen to Fadela Amara
Fortunately there are still women calling themselves 'feminists' and fully living up to this title.
Fadela Amara is the French Secretary of State in the government of President Nicolas Sarkozy. It was a clever tactic of the President to ask this socialist politician to join his cabinet.
Fadela Amara lives up to the expectations. The daughter of Algerian immigrants has been a worthwile voice in the French move to ban the headscarf from public schools and last week she made headlines after she declared that there is no real difference between the burqa and the veil, as both are aimed at the submission of women.
As former chairwoman of the organisation 'Ni Putes, Ni Soumises' (which translates like: neither whores nor submissives), she knows what she is talking about as this organisation defends womens rights in French Muslim societies.
Amara made her remarks after France refused a Moroccan woman citizenship based on the fact that she wore a burqa (or actually a niquaab, which leaves a little slit for the eyes), while not showing the slightest knowledge of French democratic and secular values.
The decision of the French Court is a great victory and one can only hope that other Western countries follow the French example by really fighting for women's rights and by not being afraid of the ridiculous accusation of racism in case this type of practices is being condemned.
Even though I wholeheartedly defend the French decision, it would be even better if the husband, who did receive citizenship, just like the two kids, would be stripped off his French citizenship as he is the real cause of all this bigotry by forcing his wife to wear this dress.
The news that German Counsellor Angela Merkel refused to enter a mosque during her official visit to Algeria as she refused to wear the veil, is just as strong a message that Western values are incompatible with outdated misogynist practices that take us back to the Middle Ages.
All those who really care for liberty, take notice!
