Let's start boycotting Bratz

October 12th 2006 20:33
I’ve never liked the Bratz brand and have so far successfully managed to steer my kids past that particular aisle. I don’t have anything against dolls - Girls need their dolls - it’s just this particular brand.

Despite the variety of dolls marketed specifically for little girls , I haven’t found a single one I like. I find them all disgusting though I can’t figure out which one is the worst - The gothic Bratz (black hair, black lipstick, and burlesque clothing) or the baby Bratz (with a milk bottle and black lace underwear)

Now they have gotten into underwear for young girls. Why the heck do 4 or 5 year olds need this type of underwear?

Not that I am a prude….have nothing against bikinis or two piece swimsuits for girls - I can see their usefulness for quick potty breaks but “padded bras” ???? Talk about growing up too soon !

Almost every parent that I know talks about how much they hate Bratz but their items still seem to sell like crazy. It’s about time we try to put a stop to their influence on our kids.

BOYCOTT BRATZ !

Amen!! My husband once said that Bratz teaches our daughters that if they dressed like sluts (or should I say Slutz) that they can get away with poor spelling.

Without question you are correct. Let our children be... children, not sexual objects.

I think these dolls are just action figures for paedophiles. What happened to letting kids be kids? It seems everything's governed by sex on this planet. Sex should not come into the equation when marketing kids' toys in my humble opinion. The commercial world seems to disagree which I find not only odd but abhorrent.

i think its fucked up that some toys are going down a very slippery slope. Some of the Bratz are cool but are not suitable for kids, i must say i bought my daughter a Living Dead Doll (ages 15 ) from a comic shop (not a toy store) when she was one month old, now she is four, she gave it back to me not long ago as she thinks its a little scary, i like that she made a choice, and at a young age.

In my mind anything goes with toys as long as they are safe and not sexual. Lets not mess with the little peoples heads too soon, Mcdonalds and Religion do a good enough job with out us the parents adding to it.

I've managed to avoid Bratz as well. Who are these people who buy things like that? Somebody must be doing it or the toy companies wouldn't keep putting this garbage on the shelves.

Ditto! I don't like the Bratz Dolls either, the way they are packaged looks like they are ..... well you know what I mean. I honestly don't want my daughter to dress like that. Alas, my daughter is into Barbie's, but more on the dvd's than the dolls.

thanks everyone for agreeing with me - makes my heart glad that i am not the only parent waginga war against these toys
Ran - agree - let's not mess with the kids heads too soon
Adele - agree - somebody must be buying these - probably kids with pocket money - because every other parent seems to hate them ...?

I hate the whole Bratz scene as well, but unfortunately i know of some parents out there that don't see it as a problem.
Heck, I even know some grandparents who've bought them for the grandkids just because that's what they wanted. Since when has giving kids everything they want been a good idea anyway?

My kids have always been anti-Barbie, and then as naturally followed, they were anti-Bratz, to the point where on her 4th birthday, my youngest daughter was given some Bratz dolls and clothing (if you can call it that) by her Auntie, and she flat out said - I don't like it, take it back, upsetting my sister-in-law. I meanwhile was very proud of her, and hoped my SIL would learn a lesson, although I don't think so in general, just where my kids are concerned.

So it was all going well, but now there's been a bit of peer pressure from their friends, so now both girls (5 & 7) have softened their stance on them somewhat which I find more than a little scary as you can imagine.

But from what I've seen so far, Bratz are bought by clueless parents and even more clueless non-parents. Personally the only contribution I could make to buying a Bratz would be in adding it to a huge Bratz Bonfire.

Hey Melissa:

I am very proud of your daughter for standing up for herself ...i know there will be a lot of parents who think that kids should be polite and mannerful - and i agree with them - but only to a certain extent.
What your daughter did requires a lot of courage - it's hard for kids who mostly just want to please grown-ups to stand up for themselves...heck, it;s hard for me too a lot of times
so YAY for ur daughter....i'm very impressed with the way you've raised her
