Let's See Kansas' OOC
May 30th 2010 07:02
Alright, alright, alright. For just one second, let's set aside petty illegalities for the moment and forget that the University of Kansas is quickly becoming more this kind of school than this kind.
For now, to continue this series, it's all about the OOC.
The Kansas Jayhawks, armed with a new look and a new head coach in Turner Gill, will open up the 2010 season with the North Dakota State Bison.
Kinda look like mini-Green Bay Packers, eh? Anywhoo, this is a total creampuff that falls under the "your first one's free" rule for colleges that want to engage in the age-old tradition of having that first sacrificial lamb slashed on the field for the first home game.
Kansas gets a freebie, and they certainly will with this team. The Bison were second to last in 2009 in the freaking Missouri Valley Conference, which includes many of the States: Missouri State, Illinois State, Youngstown State.
The Crusader's Call: There is not any level of talent that NDSU can throw at this Big 12 team, no matter their struggles, that can match up. No David and Goliath this time. Kansas starts out 1-0.
Alright, moving on. Georgia Tech.
Now HERE'S where things get interesting. It's like KU just leapt out of the kiddie pool playing the Bison and cannonballed into the 8-footer. Summer analogies aside, taking on ACC juggernaut Georgia Tech and their spread option attack, regardless that it's at home in Lawrence, is quite ambitious for the 'Hawks.
Quarterback Josh Nesbitt and running back Jonathan Dwyer both return in 2010 as juniors for the Yellow Jackets, and their option offense led to a gain of more than 1,000 yards on the ground alone in '09. KU will be breaking in not just a new coach but also a new starting QB after Todd Reesing graduated and went to Canada.
Tech fell to corn-fed Big 10 foe Iowa in the 2009 Orange Bowl, 24-14, but if there's one thing we saw the Kansas Jayhawks play last season, it certainly wasn't defense, losing their last 7 games in 2009 by a combined 101 points.
Th Crusader's Call: While I can say Turner Gill has moxie with this one in his quest to re-define the Jayhawks, it'll come back to bite him. KU falls to 1-1.
And after that we have them traveling to the home of the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.
These Golden Eagles lost to the Jayhawks in 2009 in Lawrence, 35-28, so this could be a home-and-home revenge opportunity for Southern Miss. Still, I think KU can still pull a win out of this one. I mean, Southern Miss lost their 2009 New Orleans Bowl to freaking Middle Tennessee State by 10 points, 42-32.
The Crusader's Call: Nope, no go on this one. KU goes up 2-1.
And, finally, let's take a look at the last OOC game for KU, at home against New Mexico State.
Yyyyyyyyeeeeeeaaaaahhhh I know KU's been struggling lately, but these aggies were second to last in the WAC in 2009 going 1-7 in conference play. This should be a good win for the 'Hawks at home before Big 12 play starts.
The Crusader's Call: 3-1. 'Nuff said.
So there you go, KU. You finish 3-1 in your OOC in 2010. Plenty of creampuffs, but that surprising scheduling of Georgia Tech has you at 3 OUT OF 5 STARS. Congrats, not bad at all.
