Named as the "Queen of Bossa Nova", and often referred to as "The Girl from
Ipanema", Singer/Songwriter Astrud Gilberto is the perfect example of a
talented and passionate Artist.
Astrud grew up in rio de Janeiro and move to the U.S. in the early 1960's. Her career
began when she worked she was invited by her then husband João Gilberto (the father
of Bossa Nova) to participate in his album together with Stan Getz through the
Grammy-winning recording "The Girl from Ipanema" in 1964.
Since then, Astrud's recording opened the ears of her listeners to the beauty and
sensuality of Brazilian Music. After the big hit of "The Girl From Ipanema", she started
recording her solo album "The Astrud Gilberto Album" which became an immediate best-seller, and was nominated Album of the Year. Astrud's recordings was really climbing the fame that she appeared in two motion pictures, "The Hanged Man"and "Get Yourself a College Girl". She also recorded a soundtrack for "The Deadly Affair" arranged by Quincy Jones. She appeared in a lot of Television shows, in US, Europe, Japan, and Africa.
In 1970's Astrud began writing songs where she recorded the albums Astrud
Gilberto Now" (1972) and "That Girl From Ipanema" (1977).
In the early eighties, she formed a sextet group together with her son Marcelo playing the bass. They toured Europe, Japan, Canada, and the United States. Astrud's popularity has grown non-stop and gained recognition worldwide including: "Latin Jazz USA Award for
"Lifetime Achievement" for her outstanding contribution to Latin jazz music (1992); she
was inducted to "International Latin Music Hall of Fame" (2002); "Lifetime Achievement" Grammy Award (2008).
