Law of Cause and Effect (1)

August 8th 2010 11:22
Sir Isaac Newton was a pretty funky looking and forward thinking 16th century scientist, who expounded theories which have been both agreed to and hotly debated even right up to current time. His laws of physics describe how a force applied to an object has the effect of both action and reaction. The whole concept of causality had been around way before Newton in Hebrew, Babylonian and Greek philosophy and scientific thinking. Now it is an accepted fact, and is one of the earliest experiments students do in schools around the world, working out proofs for action and reaction.

Quantum physics in the 20th century took the Law of Cause and Effect and stretched scientific understanding of it further.
"Dr. J. S. Bell, a physicist at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland, came up with mathematical proof in 1964 that showed that all the 'separate' parts of the universe are all connected in an immediate and close way.
The other profound thing that Bell's mathematical constructs shows us is that the action of a sub-atomic particle is dependent on something happening somewhere else to another sub-atomic particle. In other words, all sub-atomic events are effects of others, and causes of others."
Really Long Link

Science is very good at looking at the how of things. Surely if it is accepted that there is a physical effect between objects, inanimate things, it is logical to acknowledge there must be a similar correlation between people, living things? The next step would be finding out why things happen between people and this is where we move into spiritual thinking. Many religions teach about The Law of Karma, a similar idea to the scientific Law of Cause and Effect, but karma relates specifically to the life a person leads, the effect of their actions on others, and their reactions to the causes created by others.

People have different thoughts about karma; some feel scared, intimidated, trapped in a cycle they cannot see a way out of. Some think it’s all phooey, that life is totally random and what happens to you is all chance. Some strongly believe that have the strength of mind to overcome all obstacles and get exactly what they want out of life, without a jot of attention to how it might affect others who may trip over in their wake.

In my experience, none of the above is true. I have talked in previous blogs about the Divine gift of free will given to everyone and that is one thing that gives the awakened person the edge. You can choose.

In some ways, I see karma as being in a pinball machine, where the ball/person, is haphazardly bouncing around all over the place, causing lights to flash, sounds to go off, sometimes running up high scores and sometimes disappearing down a hole. And then the ball pops up again to be pinged around the game again and again. This is a very limited visualisation of karma as not all of it is created by chance, nor by being the effect of someone else shooting the ball around. There are times where a person will be very aware that what they are doing will have effects that will most probably bring about certain consequences, but they still go ahead. Free will is an interesting thing isn’t it.

If we return to a previous blog where I talked about reincarnation, a bigger picture appears. We can all try to correct errors and sort out issues in the next life. So the person who feels trapped in a never ending cycle has it wrong. The person who believes it’s all phooey is due for a big surprise when their physical body dies and they find themselves in the Soul body, still ‘alive’. And the person who thinks they can do anything and everything because they are stronger than the majority is due for the biggest shock of all, when the Soul finds it is accountable.

There is a sit-com on TV, called My Name is Earl, which takes a comedic look at karma, but it is still based on the same basic principles. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, and a person should try to right wrongs they may have created, deliberately or inadvertently. As for expecting to go to heaven and explaining yourself with the like of: but I didn’t mean it, or I didn’t know that was going to happen, or but I am a person of this religious persuasion and my religious leader told me that I would be okay, or any other kind of get out clause you can think of: karma doesn’t work like that.

In another blog, I talked about personal responsibility, and this is what a lot of karma boils down to. We are here in this physical body to learn and grow. We are all Soul, having this physical experience.
Go back and look at the Quantum physics analogy. Right down at the sub-atomic level, events are effects of others, and causes of others. Stuffing up is part of the journey and growing into the wonderful person we all have the potential to be is the ultimate goal.

Another image of karma is having extra baggage that you carry around from lifetime to lifetime. Sometimes you can let it go and other times you pick up some more. When you get down to it, wouldn’t it be a good idea to deliberately work out a way, like Earl, to get rid of all this excess baggage? How many airlines let you carry extra baggage for free? Isn’t there always a cost? What is the cost to you to keep on dragging this karmic burden around, meeting it again, dealing with it again?

So what can an ordinary person do to try to sort out karma? First thing is to admit you are in the same boat as all other Souls having a physical existence. You have things to do in this lifetime which are likely to involve others. Every time you ‘bump into’ someone else, it is karma. Money doesn’t make the world go around; karma does. This is part of the awakening to yourself as Soul.

One option you can begin with is to spend time taking an inventory of your past history and look for repeated patterns. Have you been in a few deadbeat jobs? Have you fallen into similar relationships that never worked out? Do you ever meet people and they just make you feel angry, sad, safe, feel you’ve known them forever, love them immediately? Do you have a certain fear or phobia? Can you recognise patterns of behaviour that you begin to see as negative and may be the cause of some of these unpleasant events?

Please do not beat yourself about the head if any negative things appear. The point is awareness, not self punishment or chastisement. We are all flawed and have all made mistakes. You are looking at causes and effects; you will have been the giver and recipient at different times in your life.

Look also at wonderful times in your life. It could be a time of great happiness, a celebration, a personal achievement? It could be a loved one had a success, seeing your child in a school play, score a goal? How did these things come about? Was your positive support, help, tolerance part of this? Had you worked hard for this achievement? Did some special gift come your way for no apparent reason? You are just doing an inventory at this stage.

If it becomes apparent to you that you may be creator of some of the things in your life that you basically don’t like, you can try changing negative attitudes and behaviours. There are self help books a plenty with hundreds of techniques on this. But not all of them work from a higher viewpoint. That doesn’t matter to begin with. What is important is to make a start in any way that suits you. Not only should we aim to sort out past karma that may be hanging around and affecting our lives, we should also be aiming not to create any more.

After my second divorce, I sat down and said to myself, I cannot blame the man every time a relationship goes wrong. I went into a kind of depression and shut down. I was doing many of the spiritual practices I talk about but I needed something else. I found a practitioner of PSH, Private Subconscious Mind Healing. For me it worked and I was able to free myself from negative patterns.

I worked from the higher viewpoint, knowing there was something I needed to fix in me to move forward, using HU and giving the result away to God. If nothing else, singing HU is the most amazing tool a person can use when working through the kinds of difficult situations and emotions dealing with karma can bring.

That is all for this blog. If you find what I have said interesting and/or challenging, you may want to read some more. I will come back to karma again. All change begins with the baby step, moving to crawling, then getting onto your feel and striding confidently. My aim is to open a door in your thinking about what life may be. You can shut it again if what I write doesn’t suit you. Thank you for reading.

Very good read. I'd like to see more on PSH.

Thanks for the comment, Margaret.

PSH is a very mild form of hypnotherapy which needs only 4 sessions. The first time, the practitioner will test to see if you are the kind of subject who will accept hypnosis. If you are, a second appointment is made.

On the second visit, you will be 'put under' but not very deeply. You begin the therapy and kind of skirt around the issues. You can bring yourself out at any point in time and are fully aware of the process. I found it began to open up things about myself I had not realised were there or thought I had dealt with, things I didn't know were causing me to feel and behave as I was.

At the third visit, I was taken deeply into myself, if you like. The practitioner talks to the conscious you, and gets to grips with the issues. They then talk directly to the subconscious to try to begin release of whatever is causing the problem(s). This is deceptively smooth and easy in practice, but the effects are very powerful. I was quite shaken and disturbed emotionally.

There is a 3 month wait until the final appointment to give you time to begin processing what has happened. During this period, I was able to contact the practitioner at any time if I wanted to. This is the time for deep release and healing as doors have been opened, if PSH has worked. I must add here that for some people, it does not have the effect it had on me. If a person is not ready to let go things in their subconscious, they simply won't. I had 2 friends who also went through PSH. One had minor success. One had none.

The final visit is very gentle. Since some of my issues went back to my very early childhood, unbeknownst to me when I started, we spoke to this baby. This is a common technique in psychology now of course. Plus some other healing technniques were used.

My experience is not everyone's. I was clearly ready to let this rubbish go and wanted to move on. It is one of the least invasive of the hypnotherapies and as I said, you can bring yourself out at any point.

I am sure there will be a lot more detailed information on the Internet.

Thank you so much for that excellent description of what PSH is. I had never heard of this before and have found it quite interesting. Thank you again for the detailed response I really appreciate it.
