Laddered tights info; what - why - how

January 12th 2012 03:32
I love my tights,

but by the way I treat them, this fact is a well-kept secret.

I am notorious for snagging the fabric on the edge of a table or sharp chair leg.

When I saw pre-ripped tights, also known as laddered tights for sale, mixed in with the colored, patterned and my wardrobe-staple black, I did a double take.

Sure I have seen models wearing ripped tights. Kate Moss and Emma Watson have been rocking the laddered tights look for years as has Miley Cyrus and other young stars. In fact, in my roller derby days, ripped tights, preferably tattered fishnet tights, were a common look. All that history with the style did not stop me from being a little surprised to seeing laddered tights for sale.

As a tights-wearing girl, I could save a lot of money if I could get into this trend. Better yet, maybe I could start selling my cast-offs for those that are into this punk-grunge-street urchin look. Although I am skipping this trend, I am not entirely against the style if done right.

Consider the following tips for those who are interested, and a few notes on what to do with your ripped tights if you are not.

Wear with conviction

This is key with any new fashion trend, you really have to own the look. Sheepishly asking your friends, coworkers and strangers on the street if they like your laddered tights will not work. You need to walk with confidence. Do not let them wear you. If you are going to wear them, really wear them.

Pair with equalizing pieces

With that said, laddered tights will look out of place with a crisp white shirt, tailored skirt and jacket. It will appear you simply had an unfortunate run in with a chair leg. Worn with a leather jacket, untucked shirt, and shorts, the look is much more convincing. You do not have to go completely grunge to pull off laddered tights, but they should look like they are a part of an overall aspect of your style.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Since I wear tights at least five days a week throughout the winter months, I end up with a lot of discards. Read what I do with them here
