Appreciating my generation

November 9th 2011 05:08
Anyone who knows me or this blog will know that i like my films, music and books a little bit older, and have on more than one occasion been told I have the tastes of a 40 year old man. When asked a while ago if I could go through time to see any concert, I had to say Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock (although this was a tough choice).

Lately however, I have been feeling so lucky to be 24 at this particular point in time. Why? Because I have been able to enjoy the really good stuff that only people from this generation seem to get into.

This isn’t to say it’s exclusively for people my age, it’s just I am yet to meet a large number of people outside of my age group who can agree with these things. If you’re older and like this stuff, I congratulate you.
Here are a few of the reasons why I have felt like this lately:

The Blood Brothers & Jaguar Love and Death From Above 1979:

All of these bands have an amazing, unique sound and I feel they are terribly underrated. Johnny Whitney has one of, if not the most distinguishable voice of this century and I find it to be comparable to that of an insane, tortured angel.

The Mighty Boosh and Metalocalypse:

Two shows that I feel display a true style of genius, I am yet to meet anyone over the age of 30 who even knows these shows. Metalocalypse, being a cartoon, is also considered a bit young for some of the older folks but even at 24 I feel allowed, nay entitled, to watching cartoons when and wherever I please. In saying these things I am trying to not come across like some brat that thinks my age allows me to have some sort of superior taste. Far from it, I am saying these things from a personal point of view that if I were older I may not have given some of them a chance.

Bunny and the Bull:

By the same people who make The Mighty Boosh, this is one of the most amazing films I have been privileged with watching in some time. It was funny and warm and beautifully created and also made me bite my lip so as to not cry. I still get shivery thinking about the gorgeous ending.

For every rule there are exceptions, and these happen to be the things/creations that embarrass me about my generation. I hate, yes I mean hate a lot of people from my generation because of their inability to accept the world does not revolve around them and wearing the same shirt as someone else is not a definition of irony.
A small list:

Films like 500 days of Summer etc:

I cannot stand the trend of ‘Indy’ films where a hopelessly romantic, straight laced guy falls for the whimsical, free spirited girl who for some goddamn reason always listens to The Smiths or Radiohead. Most girls I know like that seem free spirited but in actuality have some sort of a mental deficiency rendering them unable to act like a normal person.

Hipsters:

The bane of my existence. Wearing their vintage tees, skinny jeans, black rimmed glasses, sipping on starbucks while listening to that amazing band that you’ve never heard of on their iPod. I don’t get them, why would you want to brag about listening to bands no one has ever heard of? It’s just like telling stories about people no one has met: there is no relative interest so no one cares! Also, it’s these guys that films like the aforementioned are aimed at.

The ongoing reality TV and celebrity culture influx:

I don’t need to explain this one, and there are so many names I could put here I don’t want mentioned on my blog.

I should visit more often

October 5th 2011 00:56
As is my usual fashion, things have gotten in the way and I have neglected my blog. It's kind of disappointing but I guess it happens. In between living with an insane roommate, working hard and going nowhere fast and then the inevitable loss of my internet....it's not all my fault.

Anywho, I have an interview with Machine Head drummer Dave McClain that was supposed to be used on another website, they never replied so looks like I've scored something awesome for my blog, yay me.

It will be up next, along with my ideas for a new story and my adventures with stalking a teen wolf. Until then, please keep reading!

The howl of my generation

August 9th 2011 00:52
The voices of the generations before me echo loudly, drowning out my own.
I want to be heard.
But who have I to speak for except my generation of apathy, of the diseased and dying minds of hopeless dreamers; their thoughts a spark that never ignited, lost in a wasteland of half-formed ideas.
Their hollow hearts nothing more than the remnants of a fire that had burned brightly in the chests of their forebearers.
The fruit of their passionate loins nothing more than rotting meat, wasting away in a world of technology and 'innovation'.
Their fight was in vain.
The better world has spoiled us, left us like priveliged children with no ideals or beliefs or morals or leaders, left us to copulate in greed, the virus spreading.
The next generation is doomed to mediocrity.

An as yet un-named short story

June 13th 2011 13:36
I have recently started writing a fictional story based on some real things I've seen in this city. It's out of my usual style to post something like this but I guess I want to see if I get any reactions; they would be appreciated.

Just saying

March 14th 2011 06:06
I have so many things I want to write about that I couldn't stick to one topic. I think from now on I'll just throw random ideas on here which is why I'm writing this post quickly; it just struck me and will give you something to think about.

I'm back

February 17th 2011 23:34
I'm not even going to pretend like the amount of time I have spent away from this blog is justifiable. But, there has been a lot going on in the past 3-4 months: ended a 2 1/2 yr relationship, went on tour with a nationally renowned band, packed up all my stuff and moved across the state to live with someone I had never met, got a new job, got caught in the midst of a natural disaster, got a new tattoo annnnnd got to dance on stage with Iggy Pop.

But now I'm back. I have the internet at my home and with frightening regularity I will be posting on here about everything I love and hate about the well everything. Hope you'll keep checking back

Apparently it can.

Tomorrow, 9:15am. I am getting on a plane and flying to Canberra. Why? Because I actually booked some time to follow a band around and find out what really happens on tour.

That's right, I'm really doing it. It was only last night that this was confirmed, I booked my plane ticket this morning, it's all very last minute and I hope it all goes well. I currently have no accomodation booked, no transport from Canberra to Sydney (where the second show will be) and not even a vague idea about what to expect. This whole thing seems a little crazy but for the longest time I have wanted to have an adventure like this, so I guess if I learn nothing from this trip at least I'll have some interesting stories

Dear Anonymous,

Thank you for leaving a comment, I always love knowing someone is reading...even if they aren't reading that closely. I said that this was a piece from my point of view, seperate from those in my generation because I rarely find people my age who share my views.

In regards to 'bragging' about hearing bands no one has ever heard of, once again you missed the point. People know those bands, they are actually quite popular however I don't think they got the acclaim they deserve that's all.

The last paragraph was kind of ironic, you are reading a blog by a complete stranger so if I wrote anything on here, interesting or not, it would involve someone you've never met: me. So if you don't want to read a stranger's stories this is not the place for you sadly.

Also, was that last sentence necessary? If you had indeed made a good point in your arguments this would have negated them. There is no grammar and you spelt sister wrong I'm guessing on purpose but to what end?

But once again, thanks for the comment it was appreciated

This was a great review of the film, and I agree with a lot of what you said especially how the darkest parts of the film are those without dialogue. And that ending! Shocks me everytime.

The fact that this religion has a saint to protect children from some of its very own leaders says it all really.

on Hollywood to ban stereotypes?

August 16th 2010 04:25
I definitely agree with you, I can't see any radical changes coming soon, but when you think about it, the film industry has taken some strides forward (Gone with the wind is a great example, mammy would have caused outrage if this film were made today). But you do make a good point about Crocodile Dundee. I'm Australian and everytime I see an American show representing our accent like that, I cringe.

Wow, your well crafted and thought-provoking argument has made me think one thing- why do some people think their opinion is the right one, and anyone who disagrees needs to be shouted into submission?
This is my blog expressing my opinions, other people have disagreed with my taste in films, and that is fine. The difference between them and you is they have disagreed constructively and not insultingly. Saying that movie was good you are stupid, well that's not very constructive is it?

In conclusion, thank you for leaving a comment expressing your opinion on my opinion, but next time don't be so crass about it...try intelligent.
