President Obama says that the American education system is crumbling, and he plans to make a promised change to the system. Obama announced a five part plan of reform which starts out with more investments in early childhood education.
He also noted a plan to offer 55,000 new time parents regular appointments to visit nurses and doctors to make sure their children are healthy and ready for school and life in general.
He also plans to boost federal support in the form of "Early Learning Challenge" grants to states that promise to strengthen early childhood education.
Obama urged states to change the way their testing is done. He urged them to develp standards "that dont simply measure whether a student can fill in a bubble on a test, but whether they posses 21st century skills like problem solving, critical thinking, entrepreneurship and creativity".
He has been criticized for being "distracted" by issues of education and science, when we should be worrying about our own economy that is going under.
