Occam's Razor - by Adam Williams

Kurong

March 11th 2010 21:28
Cordelia looked up at the full moon and shivered. A feeling just rushed over her as if somewhere someone she knew was doing this exact thing.
"What's wrong Delia," William asked.
"Nothing," She sighed. "I guess a cat just walked over my grave."
"I could use another drink, wanna go get one?"
"Sure, I could use another one too," Cordelia said.
The two of them walked back down the street toward the Bosendorfer Lounge and walked in. Cordelia sat down at a table while William got drinks. A few moments later he returned with her drink. They sat in silence for a while as they drank. Thoughts about what to do next kept going through both of their minds. Cordelia was thinking about the ring and what to do with it, while William thought about where to go or what to do if someone was watching Cordelia.
"I thi-," they both said in unison.
William gave her an "after you" gesture and Cordelia continued.
"I think I need to put the ring on, and do it soon. It's supposed to mean something to me and I think it could help."
"Help with what?"
"I think it could help with protection, but not just mine or yours. The man you saw when you put the ring on is evil. I don't know how I know but I do. It's worse than what you saw because he's doing more. Torture for him is a hobby. Yes it's bad but it is nothing compared to what he's doing."
"What do you think he's doing Delia?"
"I'm not sure but I think if I put the ring on I'll find out. There's something else too, I think Occam will be paying me another visit. I think I need to see him, but I don't want to do it alone. Will you stay with me William?"
"Of course I will, if that's what you need baby."
"I think it is what I need, especially if I put that ring on."
"If you do put it on, maybe you should do something to protect yourself, just in case."
"I think you're right, and I think I know just what to do. Let's go home, we have some work to do."
They walked back down the street they came, toward William's Audi S4. Just as the car was in sight, Cordelia stopped suddenly.
"No, no, no, no, NO!!!" Cordelia yelled.
"William froze, staring at her.
"What is it Cordelia?"
"I-It's another one," She whispered.
"We need to get in the car, NOW!"
William didn't hesitate. They both began running for the car. William fumbled in his pocket for the keyless entry fob. Finding it, he pressed the remote and the car's engine purred to life. He clicked it again and the doors unlocked. They both raced to the car. Cordelia barely managed to get her door closed when there was a bang and the car shook.
"What the f-" William started.
"Drive!" Cordelia said, cutting him off.
She looked out her window and saw a face a few inches from her own. The face was gaunt with dark eyes and shrouded in dark hair. He was grinning at her. He brought his fist back, meaning to break the window but the Audi found first gear and zoomed forward. The Audi tore through the parking garage and onto the street. Cordelia looked behind her and saw the gaunt man running after them, only he wasn’t running, he was what looked like floating. They needed to get onto the interstate and away. The traffic lights would be a problem and Cordelia knew it. The floating wraith knew it too. It continued forward, chasing the car into the night.
“You gotta keep moving or else he’ll catch us!”
“I’m going as fast as I can!” William yelled back.
Cordelia continued to look behind them and saw that the figure was getting closer. William brought the car to a stop at a red light. He looked around nervously. There had to be a way to get away from him, but what was it? The interstate was still two miles away and there were plenty of traffic lights to slow them down. Meanwhile, the figure kept pursuing. William decided he needed to do something. He edged his car into the right lane and turned down a side street. The next street was better, there was a stop sign. He looked both ways and made a left turn.
The figure was still behind them but William was putting a little distance between them. Cordelia remained fixed as she peered through the back window. For some strange reason she wished she had the Glock. Maybe it wouldn’t work against him, but maybe he would back off. She didn’t think this was likely but it didn’t matter now. All she could do was hope they could get away from the guy.
William sped through a stop sign, bringing the car up to fifty mph. This stretch of road would work. There were no stoplights that William could see and only a few stop signs. He kept going, hoping that when he did get onto the highway that it would be enough. But where will we go? From what the other guy was saying this guy knew where Cordelia lived, so her place was out. What if he knew where I live too? That would be no good either.
Suddenly he had a thought.
“Delia, put on the ring, maybe it will help us get away from this guy.”
“But what if it doesn’t? What if it’s a trap or something, like when Frodo put on that ring?”
“Just do it, we don’t have time to argue!”
Cordelia looked forward and saw that they were coming to a stop. She had no clue where they were in relation to the interstate, but hoped that William did.
“William, do you know where we are?”
William looked at her with an expression that said, “What do you think” and kept driving. He made a left turn onto another street. Cordelia turned back again to look out the back window.
“Fuck me!”
“What is it,” Cordelia asked.
“It’s a dead end.”
“I thought you knew where we were going!” Cordelia screamed.
“Not now Cordelia.”
“Well then fucking do something!”
William came to the end of the road and turned the car around. At first he saw nothing and as he was bringing the car to the stop sign he saw the figure. He saw that the figure was floating towards them and had his fists pulled back. William turned the car and floored it. Suddenly the car lurched forward, engine screaming. He shifted and the car spun its wheels. Now the figure was getting closer. William pointed his car directly at the figure, meaning to plow it down. Going this fast it would surely do the trick. He shifted again, now he was nearing fifty mph. The figure kept floating nearer.
