Killer Mothers and Toy Recalls (Lead Paint)

August 2nd 2007 23:14
A mother in the town I work in is implicated in a murder-suicide that was discovered Tuesday. Headline:In notes, mother admits shooting family, but gives no motive. Two kids aged 11 and 7, and her husband were murdered - then she killed herself. There have been so many of these cases in the last few years and it just astonishes me. While I can understand being suicidal, I can't comprehend killing my family. I know some of it's mental illness and sometimes there are no warning signs...but some of these cases had to have some advanced thought to them.

There is also a recall on a whole lot of Fisher-Price toys that were made and/or painted in China. Headline: Lead in paint leads Fisher-Price to recall almost 1 million toys. The recall is of 83 (so far) different types of toys, so if your kids have anything made by Fisher-Price check out the link and see if you own the toys. Lead in toddler toys.

The news today is just killing me, I suppose it's because I am so tired.

Wow. I just can't believe what the world is coming to; imagine us 100 years after (well, I don't think I'll exist, but...) all crammed in North America (if the scientists' predictions are right). With George Bush's grandson trying to convince us to kill the water. Or drink it.
Lead in a toddler's toys? If anything happens to anyone, they'll get sued.... big time.

What a terribly sad story,

Grace - I do think that the company should be held liable for injuries that the products caused. I am not sure how this would happen though. The effects of lead based paint are usually not known for years to come. Parents can get a lead toxicity/level done on their children if they are worried. I believe most of the products didn't make it to the store shelves (from some other articles) which is a blessing.

Tracy - It really is pretty awful. There hasn't been anything else in the paper (at least online) that I can find. I find it interesting that some of these cases make national news very quickly, and some...don't. Was Andrea Yates different because she drowned the kids? Or because she's still alive? &Why do they all seem to be in Texas?
