Settling for Less Than We Deserve

May 20th 2012 11:34
As children we were told that we could be anything we want to be.

With dreams of achieving success no matter our race, gender, sexual orientation, physical or mental handicap, national origin or socio economic background; each and every member of a free society is instilled with the belief that we should never settle for anything less than what we deserve.

It is this basic principle that compelled the forefathers of the United States of America to rebel against oppressive Monarchy rule; but members of modern society are willing to settle when it comes to having a voice in the actions of their government.

Instead of standing up against the things that we know are wrong; the people of the nation that serves as a model of freedom and democracy for the rest of the world are choosing to frame arguments in groups instead of as a united nation.

The most basic rights each and every human being is entitled to upon birth have become polarizing political issues that will never receive the attention they deserve because we are too busy fighting over this when we should be concerned about that.

The this, that is about the facade of the basic issues that come with protecting our rights to marriage no matter whom we choose to love, free speech, property rights, gun rights, rights to be the caretakers of our personal health, the right to worship or not worship whatever religion we choose and other personal freedoms; and the that, that is about the all of these things that continue to be fought for the same basic issue of freedom for all citizens from different viewpoints.

When a group of men came together from different walks of life to draft what would become the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights it was not their intention to grant freedom on certain issues and withhold freedom on others.

It was their intention to make freedom simple by not elevating one right over another.

The rights each and every American citizen has to own a gun, speak freely against their government and have their property protected from seizure by federal forces is equal to the rights each and every American citizen has to worship whatever religion they see fit to worship, form a legal partnership with whomever they choose and our fundamental right to protect our bodies from government intervention.

Each and every hot button issue brought to the center stage of discussion to ignite our passions for or against one of the big two political parties always comes back to the basic issue of freedom.

The freedom that each and every one of us feels slipping away with every legislation that is passed to elevate corporate profits while deflating the personal freedoms of American citizens.

If the American people truly want freedom we have to begin fighting for it as individuals beginning with how we understand the process.

As long as we continue to pour our passions into a system that continues to prove itself as broken we are doing nothing more than running circles around the machine.

Circles that bring us back to the need for a new approach to the problems facing modern America and a desperate call for our ability to put common sense over the allure of being blinded by smoke and mirrors.

Winds of More of the Same

May 13th 2012 11:34
In the second week of May in the year of 2012; the President of the United States of America started a firestorm from a simple statement of his personal opinion.

A statement that he said was an "EVOLUTION" in his thought process about Same Sex Marriage.

By stating that he "personally feels" every man and woman has the right to form a lifelong bond with whomever they choose regardless of gender; a line was clearly drawn in the 2012 Presidential Election and for the future of American public policy on marriage.

Without the President signing an act or Congress passing a law; the conversation about marriage rights fundamentally changed in a country struggling through an evolution in the way marriage is defined.

A definition that is about more than same sex marriage, polygamy, an escalating rate of divorce, a growing number of men and women that are choosing to live together in partnerships and others that are choosing to remain single.

By the President saying nothing about what he intends to do about the Congressional Defense of Marriage Act that defines marriage as being between a single man and single woman and only stating his personal opinion we have not progressed any further on this fundamental issue as a society.

Forcing the President's hand, was the referendum passed by the voters of North Carolina to add another layer on the already existent ban on same sex marriage in the state.

In what was more of a statement vote as opposed to a change in existing law; the American people were forced to face the things we already knew were true.

Reactions of outrage were swift against the state that will host the 2012 Democratic National Convention in a few short months.

In the midst of comparisons to Jim Crowe law that forbid men and women to marry because of the color of their skin; anger never shifted to the fact that the people of North Carolina would not be able to make this bold statement without the backing of the Federal government to do so.

The theme of the "2008" Presidential election was change.

Change in the way government works.

Change in our expectations of leadership.

Change in the way we solve problems.

With control of both houses of Congress and the Oval Office resting with President Obama's Democratic Party; the opportunity to reverse the Defense of Marriage Act that allows states to ban Same Sex Marriage could have been repealed but the powers that be chose to wage war against Republicans, bail out corporations that funded their campaigns, continue wars from their predecessors while waging new one's and pass laws that continue to strip away the freedoms of American citizens.

For all the good that many feel President Obama did to state the things most of Americans already were aware of it did nothing for the struggle that continues.

There can be no argument that each and every human being has the fundamental right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

The forefathers of the United States of America understood this when they dropped their differences to draft and ratify the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

The United States of America is a nation that hasn't always gotten it right but we are also a nation that has the ability to correct mistakes.

The issues that come with the Separation of Church and State is a balancing act we may never be able to master.

Simply coming to an "Evolution" about the Same Sex Marriage does nothing for the desperate need to find a solution to a problem that is destined to continue being a thorn in our side at a crucial time in American history.

A solution that needs a delicate touch to not strip away the rights of religious groups while also guaranteeing the fundamental rights of each and every American citizen to form a lifelong bond with whomever they choose regardless of their gender.

We are dealing with the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, an epidemic of unemployment that has grown beyond a way to properly make accurate assessments, an escalating problem of homelessness on the streets of America, an obesity crisis that can only be solved by changing the way we approach the issue, a Cancer crisis that is growing by the minute and a government that is failing to listen to the people.

Our problems are great but the solution is simple.

We need to get back to the basics of respecting our fellow man by understanding the principles that make the United States of America a strong nation.

If we return to the basics we can begin to the understand the errors of our ways instead of picking and choosing moments to celebrate as a form of escapism.

Not my problem

May 6th 2012 13:52
We have become a society addicted to the speed of information. Little pieces of complex issues have taken the place of lengthy discussions, understanding and working through our problems.

When faced with the harsh reality surrounding everything we've lost as a society; we have chosen to shut down, become angry at the forces we are told to blame and quit searching for a better way.

The phrase "Not my problem" has become the battle cry of a lost generation that has chosen to wage war within groups.

Groups that continue to tell their followers to throw rocks at one another while the power players push similar agendas without regard for the people they were elected to represent.

The problems we refuse to accept as our own continue to evolve into the issues that are tearing apart the fabric of our society.

From the way we choose to turn a blind eye to the recklessness of the banking industry to the destruction of the food supply; the conspiracy theories we were told to disregard have now become the realities we can not avoid.

A common phrase in a time of crisis is "Things will always get worse before they get better."

A phrase that has brought comfort to many of us that have faced a personal adversity or hardship that we thought would never end.

The difference between things getting worse before it gets better in our personal lives and things getting worse before it gets better as a society is actions.

When we choose to correct things in our personal lives we work towards making things better but the men and women in positions of power continue to choose to do things just the way they have always been done resulting in things getting worse.

Until the people create a better options for themselves by forcing government to to the jobs they were elected to do by representing them; we will continue to support the destructive actions of our leadership.

Destructive actions that are changing the battle cry of "Not my problem" into the simple reality of "It's Everyone's problem."

Fooling Ourselves

April 29th 2012 13:24
In 7 months, the American people are going to be faced with one of the toughest decisions in the history of the United States of America.

A decision between two men working overtime to convince the voting electorate that they are radically different from one another when the truth tells us that they are exactly the same

Earth Day 2012

On this Earth Day it is more important now than ever that we take the opportunity as a world society to "Keep it Real"

The consequences of our addiction to energy, money and power have taken it's toll on our food and water supply and the Earth has become erratic with the onslaught of extreme weather, drought, polluted skies and poisoned soil from human intervention

Double Standard of Living

April 15th 2012 13:53
The mark of a great society is and has always been the standard of living the people of that society are able to enjoy on a daily basis.

While many view a standard of living by cleanliness and the ability for a society to prevent the spread of disease, the ability for citizens to have food in their bellies, the ability of citizens to have representation in their government, safety on the streets and in the homes of citizens and a general sense of order; it has also been said that standard of living is measured by the people of a societies ability to understand the basics of common sense and decency

The Season for Change

While some view Spring as a time for celebration of religious holidays and others view Spring as a time to display bright colors; there can be no argument that Spring is universally known as a season of change.

Change from the cold and darkness of winter to a preview of the brighter days and warmer weather that are to come in the Summer Season

The preciousness of life is something that continues to be understated.

For all the glory that is the opening week of the NCAA Mens Basketball Championship; the ending is always just as thrilling.

While this years tournament may not have the shock value of a Butler or VCU in the Final 4 what it does have is the passion that comes from a state rivalry between Louisville and Kentucky, the return of one of last year's final four participants, conference pride with four separate power conferences represented, 13 National Championships shared among the teams in the Final Four and a dramatic close to a tournament many experts had a hard time predicting

Exactly,

Voter apathy, lack of choices and settling for a broken system has lead to a deterioration of the most basic freedoms.

No one is entitled to a house with a white picket fence but each and every American citizen was handed down a set of inalienable rights by the framers of the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights.

It is up to the people to serve as caretakers of these rights. When we fail to do so there is no one to blame except for ourselves.

Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Everything you posted is 100% correct.

In a world where everybody is content with being reactionary it is becoming harder and harder to find intelligent conversation that helps move our desperate situation forward.

Politicians will always have an agenda and the modern culture of laziness, pessimism and group mentality allows us to live in the false belief that someone will save us instead of understanding the need for us to save ourselves.

Thank you for reading and I am hoping that we can have more intelligent conversations like this in the future.

Thanks Marty,

You are absolutely right about more people in the electorate needing a wake up call to understand what we have at stake beyond what the "political powers that be" want us to be paranoid of.

I also share the hope that this topic will spark a conversation among the populous because it may already be too late to live up to the intentions our Forefathers had for us as a nation.

“I would rather die fighting for a cause considered by some to be naive or foolish than to live a lifetime wondering what I could have done to make a difference in the lives of my fellow man, woman and child.”

In the figthing spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Susan B. Anthony, Mahatma Gandhi
The Dalai Lama and every other man, woman and child who found themselves fighting against “the impossible” I refuse to accept this word as fact.

It has become clear that you find the situation with a corporately controlled media, governments making decisions for the people that finance their political future instead of the citizens that elect them into office and a growing sense of powerlessness as something that is impossible to change.

To this and the arguments you made in your last post; I say that the change we need must come from the way we choose to make a difference and not from expecting the powers that be to suddenly change course from multiple decades of bad decisions.

It is not enough to allow an important message to the people of the world to be blocked by filters “because of what we think” is our right to use curse words or to say that a message will not be heard because we have no choice but to rely on the corporations that are destroying the planet to finance their own demise.

Both of these arguments can be circumvented by the simple action of thinking outside of the boxes that have been set up for anyone who speaks out against the system to fail.

I understand your pessimism.

When we take an honest look at the big picture of wars being fought for oil money, a food industry run amok with the government openly allowing the use of pesticides, chemicals, hormones, steroids, antibiotics, animal abuse on farms and the shoddy production of meat products fear has to be first reaction.

Fear of a system that is connected with the financing of the big two political parties in the United States of America, the financial life blood of major media in both print and broadcast along with the false message of everything being OK and anyone who speaks out against the system labeled as a conspiracy theorist or societal disruptor.

Even with the downfall of print media and decline of radio and television influence from more and more world citizens turning to the internet and social media for news and information there is no one on the planet that could possibly think that the tide is anywhere close to turning.

Contrary to your assertions of me being naive I agree with and understand all the arguments you have continually presented to fuel your pessimism but I am not ready to declare the current climate of greed and depravity as an any man or woman for him or herself situation.

What I am prepared to do is work on an individual level by using the tools at my disposal to reach out to as broad of an audience as possible to spread the word about the things happening in the world and the dangers that are to come if the human race does not change the way we choose our leadership.

It is only with the spread of knowledge that we can begin to fight back against a system that seems invincible.

For me, the word impossible has never been something that has instilled the fear that allows some people to believe that they can't do their part to help their fellow man.

The minute we fall into the comfortable slumber of feeling incapable of doing anything on an individual level is also the minute that we have lost the war.

I applaud you for all the work you have done and continue to do by seeking out and spreading knowledge about all the things happening behind the curtain of invisibility.

It doesn’t matter if your blogs are reaching 5, 10, 50 ,5,000 or 100,00 people so long as it is reaching an audience that is ready to begin breaking the stranglehold of traditional media powers by inciting action among the public.

It’s not our ability to instantly create an audience the size of a television or radio network that will be the spark in a haystack to create a fire around the globe but it will be our ability to not quit or give into the pessimism that tells us it is impossible to bring down the systems that continue to place the lust for money above the welfare of our fellow man.

I certainly can't form an argument on the facts you have presented but we also can't fall into the trap of saying that change is impossible.

The unregulated medium of the internet has allowed voices that have been suppressed by the corporately controlled media and political party powers to be heard.

This has also allowed the opportunity for Independent candidates and disenfranchised political party members to have their messages heard through unfiltered vehicles.

The only question is whether the men and women we need to stand up for the people are willing to do so or if we are going to simply throw our hands up in the air and say it is impossible.

I am more on the side of using all the tools at my disposal to spread unfiltered truths no matter how uncomfortable they make us feel and forming open discussions about the forces that stand against progress and the dangers that are to come if we remain closed minded to the real solutions that are on the table.

Solutions that are about more than being angry at a system that has been and will always be left open for change as long as societies remain free through the right to vote where the power has been and will always be in the hands of the people if they are willing to use it.

Thank you for reading and thank you for posting your wonderful insights on this issue with references to help move this conversation forward.

You are absolutely correct in stating that I offered no concrete solutions.

In my 5 years of writing this blog it has never been my intention to be a "Solution Man" nor has it ever been my intention to be anointed the title of "Smartest Man in the Room"
The problem with modern society has everything to do with the lust for men and women that can come up with solutions in one sentence or less as opposed to the proven effectiveness of laying the facts out on the table and arriving at sensible solutions that work for the entire world community.

With each and every word I type it is my expressed goal to break the glass ceiling the corporate media, political parties and secret societies have placed over the truth everyone is whispering about but no one is willing to take on in an open public forum for everyone around the world to see.

The time has come for all the things that have been labeled as the fantasies of conspiracy theorists to come to the light of day and most of the people around the world aren't ready to face the inevitable truth.

The one concrete solution I can give in this conversation is for the people around the world who have the ability to elect their leaders to do so wisely.

To select the best man or women for the job not because of their gender, race, celebrity status, religion or stature within a political party but because of the things they stand for and will do to help move the ship away from the iceberg.

The people of the world still possess the power to direct their elected representatives through votes but can only do so if they choose to break the vicious cycle that has been formed by the status quo.

on Media Deregulation Erodes Democracy

October 4th 2010 13:25
I think you hit an important point in the last sentence of your response...

"They often blame all problems and anyone who disagrees with on racism, rather than real concrete cause for concern such as Job loss and extreme deficit."

No matter how much we try to spin this in saying that the media has become "liberal" or "conservative" the problem clearly rests within the fact that we've all lost sight of what's important.

The media is no longer a beacon for free speech and a watch dog against government...

What's happened is the media has become a Fast Food service that pumps out a watered down product the consumer has become accustomed to.

A watered down product filled with partisanship, dramatics, hate speech, un-factual information and false bravado.

No matter how much we try to regulate it or try to bring it back to where it should be as a fair and balanced information source to serve the public good the innocence has already been lost.

It is our duty as citizens to find unbiased sources of information to enrich ourselves and family with the facts that separate the fluff and bull from facts and fiction.

We can not rely on any money making entity to do this for us just as much as we can't rely on a politician whose life blood is corporate money and allegiance to a political party to protect their jobs.
