Is Debt Draining Your Happiness?

November 2nd 2007 16:53
College Stripe is dedicated to helping college students get by day to day.

For those in debt, getting by is sometimes very tough. Students with financial problems often experience sleeplessness, anxiety, and steep stress levels.

Instead of paraphrasing ways that you can get help, I'd like to direct you to a couple resources that might help you:

I hope you can find some relief in one or all of these links.

Challenge

November 2nd 2007 16:45
I've got a challenge for all you college students our there. I seven year old can do this, so I sure hope you're capable. No, I'm not going to send you a prize if you win because there is not ultimate winner in this challenge. If you participate, you win. No one is better than the next person.

First, get a container with a lid. It could be between the size of an empty peanut butter jar or coffee can. This container is now your change can. Each coin you receive in change belongs in this jar. Pull out the couch cushions, check under your bed, in the pockets of the jeans you wore three days ago, anywhere and get those coins in the can. Once you see how much change you actually collect, you can see the value of saving these coins for a rainy day.

Your rainy day might be a hole in your backpack, winter jacket, muffler, bike tire, checkbook. You might realize that a speeding and parking ticket need to wake from their nap in your glove compartment. Whenever a dreary day gets in your way, find shelter in your coin can.

The challenge is to keep filling the can with coins for at least four months without removing any of it. Two year ago, I started a coin can. By the end of the summer (a little over three months), I had saved nearly $90. I understand that saving money in this fashion does not reward you with interest. If you want, go to your bank and create a separate account with this money. Again, only use it only for the rainy days.

I'm hoping that you'll find a rainbow at the end of this challenge.

Wardrobe Swap!

November 2nd 2007 01:52
While looking through my closet each morning deciding what to wear, I wonder why I keep so many unnecessary items. Am I really going to wear the sea foam green t-shirt that is too big for me? I think I kept that one just to use for lounging or if I need something to wear if I plan on getting dirty. I have so many articles of clothing that fit into the "just in case" category. These unnecessary items are filling my closet and dresser leaving little space for the items I do wear weekly. Do you suffer from this same problem?

As I finger through the articles of clothing that I do have, I wish I had something in a specific color, or with a certain style, yet I don't have the money to go out and buy something like that. For special occasions I have a limited selection of "dressy" clothes. Do you find the same problem in your closet?

If you have these problems that makes two people. Ask your friends and see if they can relate as well. I suggest that you hold a wardrobe swap. Gather all the clothes that you no longer wear and are willing to donate to someone who will. Have your friends do the same and meet to filter through them. By the end of the event, you should have at least a few of your items donated and several new bits to add to your collection. Whatever is left over can be donated to Goodwill or another donation center.

These events are great ways to clean the crap out of your closet and dresser. A suggestion though: don't take more than what you removed. That will not solve your problem.

Slay the Vampire!

November 2nd 2007 01:40
Are you stressing out on how you're going to pay all of your bills this month? Are you trying to figure out a way to reduce your energy bill? Well here's something you might not have thought about!

Did you know that every appliance that you keep plugged in drains energy, even if the appliance is turned off? This phenomenon is known as Vampire energy. The appliances are sucking energy without producing any benefit to you. Microwaves, DVD players, and VCRs actually drain more energy when plugged in but not in use, than when you're actually using them

Laundry is NOT Such a Chore

May 23rd 2007 17:06
Whether you are doing laundry down the hall from your dormitory room or if you’re at a Laundromat a block away from your apartment here are some tips for getting your laundry done efficiently.

Doing laundry is great activity to practice time management. There is a timer set for how long the clothes will be in both the washer and in the dryer. During these times, you can accomplish other tasks. Make sure to bring enough supplies with you to keep yourself occupied while your clothes wash. Don’t forget to bring: a small pencil bag containing a few pens, one pack of spiral bound ruled index cards, two or three different colored highlighters, a pencil and a small pencil sharpener; and one of your textbooks with the corresponding notebook

Get Goofy and Play Games

May 16th 2007 19:56
It’s easy to find yourself claiming to be bored. How about a game night to soothe the boredom blues? Ask around and see if anyone has any board games or a deck of cards. Try to stay away from video games—board games and card games are much more interactive. Some great board games are: Cranium, Quelf, Boxers or Briefs, and Apples to Apples(*). Don’t have any board games?—Then make a scavenger hunt list!

Get a group of friends together (anywhere from five to ten should be sufficient) and give each person six index cards. Have everyone jot down on separate index cards, items to find/take a picture of or actions to do and capture on video or still film. Put all of the index cards in a bag and have someone pull an idea out. After that person has accomplished their task, another person draws. Try to stay in a group as much as possible, the object is not to win, for there is no winner or loser, the purpose of the game is to spend some time with your friends doing something a bit out of the ordinary. Spread the game out to the entire city

Ditch Delivery

Sick of ordering pizza every Friday night, yet still have that craving for pizza? Why not try something different? Stop by a grocery store and pick up two bags of English muffins, a large can/jar of pizza sauce, a couple bags of shredded mozzarella cheese, and veggies (peppers, onions, olives, tomatoes, and mushrooms), pepperonis, or anything else you’d normally eat on a pizza.

How to make the perfect personal pizza

Essential oils can provide a multitude of benefits to one’s day. Oils can be worn as a perfume, added to sea salts for a scented bathing experience, and can be infused into a room for a refreshing scent. Few college students know of the benefits of essential oils. Why should college students keep oils on hand? I’ll tell you.

Essential oils are not harmful to the senses. Most often, they are organic and therefore quite beneficial mentally and physically. There are multitudes of uses for different essential oils but the one oil that ever college student should keep on hand is peppermint.

Take Five

May 15th 2007 17:38
Have you ever written down a list of all your tasks to complete in one day? Included on the list would be putting finishing touches on a presentation, studying for next week’s exam, and editing a five page paper. As you lie in bed trying to fall asleep, do you wonder where the hours of the day went? Did you feel rushed? Do you let yourself relax and take time for yourself?

It may be hard to find time for yourself. Perhaps you live in a house where your roommates are constantly rowdy and have friends over all the time, or maybe you live in the dorms where you can’t seem to find ten minutes of silence. Despite the unfortunate living situation you find yourself in, you can still have five or ten minutes just to yourself.

on Is it ever too BIG?

If you're willing to do into debt over a piece of jewelry you obviously don't have your priorities set. I think it's ludicrous to spend anything over three months rent. Have fun crawling out of the hole you're in because of that "bling."

I have had several Reiki healing sessions. I am a practitioner in LaHo-Chi, myself. I too have many crystals. Reading this post as well as the comment before me makes me reconsider where I have my crystals located. I have two areas of my room (I live in a dorm room) where my crystals are set. Perhaps I should distribute them throughout my room to encourage a better flow of energy. Thanks for the post!
