Our Lady Peace

June 30th 2008 13:09
Wikipedia has pretty much slayed dreams of pitiable writers like us to become the major reporter or the first introducer of a ‘something’. So, while you pay a visit there to check out some basic facts about the band I’ll be talking about and you probably never heard of, Our Lady Peace, I’ll introduce here a few of their songs that have steadily morphed me into their big fat fan. I’ve been bombarding you all with European bands in the past; it’s time to warm up to Canada.

1. Life –
Firstly, I’d like to warn you this isn’t their best, but I have the most profound respect for it because it’s what made me a fan. It’s particularly the domination of tom-toms from beginning to end, the brief gentle vocal parts, and the sad emotional lyrics and video clip.

If you’re a first time listener and quite shocked by the lead singer’s ‘whiny’ voice, you’ll get used to it and soon embrace it as the band’s unique virtue.

Favourite Lyric: “She gets high, she gets lost. She gets drowned by the cost twice a day, every week, and all alive.”

Video (Official):

2. Naveed –
Now THIS is their best, which also happens to be their very first single. It has a distinctive intro with an exclaiming bass guitar solo, gradually followed by the rest of the instruments.

This song is the perfect example when I say their old stuff is much better and deeper than the new stuff, and also when I say you will find it hard to name any band that sounds like them, unlike Nickelback even though they are awesome too in a different way.

Favourite Lyric: “Prayer's on his knees again, trying hard to understand why Naveed would let a young man die.”

Video (Official):

3. Superman’s Dead –
I love how the outro sounds different than the first three-quarter of the song. It’s almost like two different songs gelled into one track.

As for what the song is about, there’s no better person to answer this than the lead man himself, Raine Maida:

"It's just about how hard it is for kids to grow up today. They're inundated with the media and images and cliques they try to have to fit into. Two images that are really strong for me lyrically are 'ordinary's just not good enough today,' and when I think of kids today, I would never think of a group of eight-year-olds going out to a baseball park and throwing the ball around. It doesn't happen any more.

I have a nine-year-old brother; he's either inside playing Nintendo or staying up late on a school night watching Beavis & Butt-Head. And you juxtapose that against the old Superman, on the black and white series. He was a real hero, good values, strong willed, a gentleman, but I think Beavis & Butt-Head wins today."

(credited to a poster named ‘onceagain’ on Songmeanings.net)

Favourite Lyric: “Doesn't anybody ever know that the world's a subway.”

Video (Official):

4. Clumsy –
If you loathe that song by Fergie, this might help clear it out of your mind since it’s got the same title.

Favourite Lyric: “As clumsy as you've been, there's no one laughing. You will be safe in here.”

Video (Official):

Presently, the lead singer embarks on a solo career and is doing what I call an ‘acoustic rapping’. Think Kanya West strumming an acoustic guitar. His solo album titled The Hunter's Lullaby, while delivers bold messages, melodically is a whole different world, and I’m absolutely not a fan of it. However, it might actually be your vibe. Thus, for the sake of helping promote him, this is his first single:

Yellow Brick Road
Video (Official):

Combined with the fact that they’ve also released their greatest hits album last year, does this signify the end of the church of Our Lady Peace? Even if they are due for another album, I’m not going to keep my expectations high.

Future Fire

June 22nd 2008 13:02
"Future Fire" tells a story of a woman trapped in a fire, with her baby in her arms, yet still has faith of being rescued or believes that she can perform the rescue herself. I love the human vs. nature vibe in this song. The woman is having a nervous conversation with the fire and they're battling it out to the end.

Future Fire

The kingdom has come
in my eye
and in the other one
that's dry as your really sore deed
I am the faith and you're not
but you can be one
If I was too gentle to you

The child is in my shade
listening to my fearful breath
cause it soon will fade
the moonlights are dead

Chorus:
…and so is my future
But I can see a future
in my gun fire
I know it will save her
though the blaze will undress me

I pray for a storm
I pray for the rain
just to remind me
just to remind me
when you're drowned

The golden has shone
in my eye
and in my other one
that's wet like your bloody murder
I am the faith and you're not
but you can steal mine
If I was so losing to you

The child is in my bone
bearing down my fearful soul
cause it kills itself
the hopes are all gone…

Bridge:
the child is in my eyes
look into my fearful mind
guess I will not fade
The moonlights are vanished

Here And There

June 16th 2008 01:12
Definitely my number 1 personal favourite out of all the songs I've written for the past five years. This one is about all the drama, backstabbing, and clashes between cliques happening in high school through one person's point of view. Hopefully it will be a hit if it's ever released. I kinda wish Tori Amos reads my blog though, haha.

Here And There

Here and there
Just today's loneliness for you to save and embrace

Here and there
I breathe in your favourite pain
My courage glues are melting

Here and there
I feared with all those scenes of your silent creations

Here and there
You swallowed the snow
You think that your scars are not broken

The dark lights have come out again
Needed the sun to shine

Chorus:
Don't you dare laugh at me
I know where your bomb is
I know who'll explode
Don't you burn my sky
I know where the cross is
I know who's crucified

Here and there
I was the open fire of your very cold night

Here and there
Not that I know of
I just can't recall that you were falling

The fire wraps your eyes up again
Wait for the rain to cry

Don't you dare laugh at me
Don't you dare laugh at me
I know you’re crucified
Don’t you burn my sky
Don’t you burn my window
I know you'll explode too

Bridge:
the child whispers in your eye
He wants to feel your protection
You know I can save you
But I know I can’t save him

Then I appear in your mind
I want to see your direction
I know I might save you
But you know I can’t save him tonight

The Corrs: The Coors Who?

June 7th 2008 11:56
Ever thought about what rock and traditional Irish Celtic music would sound like if they were two horny animals having intercourse with one another? I’ll introduce you the magnificent.............

VH-1 100 Greatest "One-Hit" Wonders has put the Cardigans’ 1996 Romeo and Juliet soundtrack "Lovefool" at number 45, approximately 20 notches above the uber-crap tune “Mambo No. 5”, and 43 above the worst rave anthem for toddlers “Barbie Girl”.

What kind of poo is this? This Swedish band is more of a one-hit wonder than the likes of Lou Bega and Aqua despite actually having had a lot of charting singles around the world

The Subways: Untypical Posers

May 25th 2008 12:40
I first discovered them on TV, in my underwear, while inhaling my breakfast, the magnificent butter bread cocooned with chocolate sprinkles. It’s underwear as in a T-shirt and boxer. Quit your fetish thoughts right there! It was a video clip of “Girls and Boys” , their first single from their upcoming CD “All or Nothing”, which will be released or illicitly available online on 30 June 2008.

I usually refuse to like early twenty-something punk rockers. I simply don’t think 20 years of living some kind of life is enough to make you a genuine dejected crazy bastard; or maybe I just didn’t grow up properly. Anyways, that song in the video clip was so cool that I instantly forgot about my biased sentiment, to the point where I can be easily forgiving if they turn out to be mere posers who are still struggling to differentiate the left from right wing

Feeder: Silent Cry (CD Preview)

May 22nd 2008 01:24
One of my much loved non-'topdog' UK rock bands is once again ready to tackle the music scene with yet another sipid album, to be released on 16 June 2008. Like a very few people, I had the privilege to listen to the full version of each track. Accordingly, I want to share the experience with each of you.

Yes, We All Look Like Celebs!

Hang on, how can you even explain the silkiness and the absence of wrinkles, pimples and acnes on their skin from head to toe?
One word: Photoshop

First and foremost, what are they actually called?
I thought it’s ‘Morocco Scarf’.
My posh friends however gladly corrected me and said it’s ‘Prayer Scarf'

We often criticise immigrants for not embracing and blending with our culture. How is this much different from most of us who, when planning to travel to other countries, tend to look for hotel rooms that are provided with soft beds and soft pillows instead of the traditional bamboo mattresses, along with its restaurants that serve omelettes and cereals every morning?

I'm actually pretty amazed how the photoshoppers truly paid attention to details. As mentioned above, they fixed her fat, her hair, and even her left calf!
