Seyal's Adventures in Dog Training - Featuring Wally, the dog that caused this adventure to begin

Keeping Things Fresh In Your Dog's Mind

One thing I often forget and get too lax about is keeping things already learned fresh and practiced in Wally's mind. He's so interested in learning new things and I'm so interested in teaching him new things that the stuff we've learned in the past gets left behind and gets out of practice.

Experienced some of that this afternoon. Was reminding him of what "front" and "finish" was and he wasn't as good with it as he used to be. He would stop to short, have a hard time correcting his mistake, didn't line up well, it was like re-teaching it from the beginning again.

And then with finish, he wouldn't line up well and even would sit at completely the wrong angle, and again, he couldn't figure out what was wrong.

So what I'm going to have to remind myself what to have Wally give me his older behaviors every so often just in the course of daily stuff, not always just in "formal" training sessions. This will make him come up with it "cold", as they say, and really have him bring up and maintain that behavior.

I can see how front and finish fell off the map since those aren't behaviors I ask for day to day and he doesn't need them day to day, unlike heeling, lying down, opening/closing doors, etc. So I'll just have to make myself throw those behaviors in along with some of the others just to keep them fresh.

Guess I learned yet another lesson in dog training today!

P.S. Happy Daylight Savings! Enjoy your 23hr long Sunday!
