The Thinnest of Air

My latest obsession is snorkeling. One day I was trying on my brother's snorkel and trying not to be disgusted by what he referred to as a "purge valve" and the next day I was buying a snorkel and swim fins and looking up the best places to dive.

It's amazing to see how much is going on under the surface of the water. Places I have swam in before have entire ecosystems that I never knew about. It was in one of these ecosystems that I came across a 13 or so year old boy with a spear gun.

Thankfully, almost everyone out where I was loves that area and, within moments of him entering the water, he had been blocked off by a man in a kayak, my brother, and myself and was being warned that spear fishing is forbidden in nature reserves.

What is the appeal of shooting at small schools of mostly inedible fish with a gun? I really don't know. I've been to a shooting range before and have gone paintballing, and I enjoy fishing as far as catching and releasing goes, but I don't think I'll ever understand hunting.

This experience has influenced one of my new year's resolutions (which I never usually bother with, but am trying this year). I'm going to try my best not to take everything at face value; to appreciate that there might be more to things, under the surface. I'm also going to consider how my actions effect my surroundings more.

Me and My Shadow

December 11th 2006 04:18
Over the weekend, against my better judgement, I decided to be active and play sport. It was a mistake on several levels. Firstly, I prefer to sleep off my hangovers on the weekend, like a normal person. Secondly, it was a sport which centred around a hard ball moving very fast. And, thirdly, I am a lady - and ladies do not sweat. We may, from time to time, gently perspire, but that's about it.

I was glad to get home. I'm not sure who won the game, but if there was a prize for the most hungover, bruised and sunburnt person, then I would have taken home a trophy. I am still feeling some of the effects today, which made me think two things. 1). I am old. 2). The sun hates me.

If you are an Australian then you are probably familar with the 'Slip, Slop, Slap' campaign of the 1980's, aimed at encouraging people to slip on a hat, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat.

Sid the seagull was on the TV all the time, warning us to avoid sun damage... I'm pretty sure he had some kind of speech impediment - that's how 1980's it was, they gave Sid the Seagull a lisp.

The adds were played during cartoons and even though I probably wanted Astro Boy to come back on, I remember paying attention.

So, on the weekend I had on a hat, and sunscreen, and sunglasses, and usually a shirt - still I got sunburnt. Thanks fair complexion!

What's the answer? Stay indoors? Well, then I'm prone to a vitamin D deficiency and we all know where that leads... yes, rickets! So, do I take the pain and apply a litre of aloe vera to my face and arms each week, or do I become a pale grey colour and walk around with bendy leg bones? ... It seems I have some thinking to do.

Nothing More Than Feelings

December 8th 2006 07:47
What is the most irritating sentence in the English language? Even though Adam Sandler is very, very, rich he keeps on making movies? Yes, that's right up there. But this week, I have heard the following sentence twice and if I hear once more, I might snap.

"I'M SORRY... THAT'S JUST THE WAY I FEEL"

Now both of the people used the sentence to conclude a tragically uninformed theory. Tragic because they were much more loud and passionate than they were... what's the phrase? Oh, yes "Making sense" - that's it.

First of all, no one should be sorry for having an opinion. I'm fairly certain, however, that in these cases (and in most cases) the use of the word 'sorry' was a backhanded gesture. A rhetorical device used by the more intellectual amongst us, and made famous by teenagers in almost every John Hughs movie in the 1990's.

Our opinions should be based on an understanding of the subject to which they refer and it's context, and given freely and without bias. When people repeat something they have heard someone else say; or form opinons based on hate, or fear of something they don't fully grasp, they should be thrown to the ground and jumped on, while I stuff my beer coaster into their gob and pummel them into submission with my size nines.

I'm sorry... that's just the way I fell.

I Will Resort to Violence Too

December 7th 2006 03:52
If you happened to read the front page of the Manly Daily today, then you now have some understanding of true, unbridled stupidity.

A Colony of penguins, nesting at Manly's Store Beach, has been decimated; eggs smashed and parents (who share parenting duties and breed for life) scared away

Introduction Post

December 6th 2006 07:31
Some things make me question governments, others make me question the existence of a higher power, but most things make me question the function of ignorant people. There's nothing wrong with idiots - don't get me wrong, I stray into Stupid Town now and then - but so many things around me just make me pause and ask...

I was calling... the person next to you... lady?

Three members!?!? We're cooler than the fonz.

And now, it's off to the BDO. Music and being wasted. What a delightful combination.

Oh. My. God. Why is this coming out multiple times??? Was it because I've used the Fonz's name in vain?

Hey Cibby,
Yes. There are some great places to dive around Manly. Some of them are quite a hike, because they're kind of remote, but I like that - you don't run into diving schools and people with spear guns

Hi Ash,
That's exactly what I thought... even with the best visibility, accidents can happen, and accidents with a spear gun aren't pretty, I bet. Also, the cove around from us is where sharks breed. I don't want to be around if someone starts bleeding in there.

Hello Lilla,
I still get a bit scared if I see a large shadow, or something brushes up against my leg. Don't tell anyone

Yes, I figure that the more I talk about my resolution, the more people might think it's a good idea and join in with me in not being an asshat.

I am glad he was spotted, too. He was ready with an excuse right away, and he gave me the impression that he knew he was in the wrong. I hope a ranger fines him next time he tries it - they are BIG fines.

Oh man, the GBR would be awesome!
