Looking like a punk rocker...

June 8th 2008 02:02
So, following on from yesterdays post I thought ok. Let see how one can look like a punk.

So, looking at the list (see previous post) and other peoples "views" on how to be a punk, here is my guide to looking like a punk.
(please note that this is by no means a way that I feel about punks. You could be dressed in a ball frigging gown for all I care! - this is going off how people view "punks" and what we are presented with by the media, stars etc)

1. Wear a t-shirt that makes you stand out....Ok. lets look at this one. There are a number of shops that sell "punk" tees. It says one thing you can do how ever is make your own tops by printing a copy of say The Clash, put the image on the t-shirt. Here are a few examples:

2. Spike and/or color your hair. The classic punk look of course is the mo-hawk. But there are so many to choose from. Here are a selection of 'hawks' to pick from, any are acceptable.

3. Make up. Back in the 70's make up was all the range. It seems to be mainly the women but basically its the really made up eyes, like over the top and really red lippy.

4. Studs are important, a good row leather belt is essential. Hmmmm.... belts are good to hold your pants up. There are only so many studded belts you can picture here so I'll just put one picture here....

5. If someone gives you sh*t or calls you a poser, give them the evil stare. Ok. I just think this one is so funny, it is defo how a punk should act.. haha.

6. Get a tattoo. So this is a pre-requisite for being a punk. You have to get a tattoo. Interesting. Lol. I've just realised how angry doing this is making me.... how stupid some people are putting these regulations on how to be a punk grrrrrrr!!!!!!!!

7. Start your own band. It's the only way you can be truly punk. HAHAHAHAHA!

8. Listen to punk rock. Seriously. Listen to what ever you want. Its what moves you. BUT if you go by the list, listen to The Clash, The Ramones, Sex Pistols, UK Subs, Decendants and the like... old school.

Ok, so that is just a sample of the things you must do to be a punk rocker - if reading the internet is anything you want to go by.

My personal opinion? Just be your self. Don't worry about what other people think, as long as your happy and living your life who really gives a f**k what other people think!!!!!!!!

A friend of mine who has recently started getting into punk music.. well Good Charlotte and Fall Out Boy. She asked me what she needed to do to do to become a punk.

I just stared at her. I could not believe she was asking me how to be something that in essence requires no rules. You be who and what you want. I told her this. She looked at me blankly and then said 'yeah but what do I wear? what else should I listen to?'

I told her that its really some thing that you have to work out on your own, you forge your own way, your own path.

Having said that, it got me thinking. The web is a wonderful and knowledge filled place for finding out just how to become a punk rocker.

So here is a list of the best ways to become a punk rocker. Most of them had notes at the beginning saying ...
The real way to become a punk rocker is to not listen to what anyone says about how to be punk. You can't pretend punk.

1. Refuse to take trash from anyone, and be an individual.
2. (Some Might say) Listen to some good punk music. Remember, the old school is much better than the new! But if it's only one genre and people will not talk to you if you like something else , Then do you really wanna be friends with some one that closed minded in the first place
3. Always hit up your local record store.
4. Wear a tee-shirt that makes you stand out (preferably designed by yourself). You could wear a Clash tee-shirt and learn to screen print and make it yourself. Also, you can go for something way out there like a neon tank with black stripes!

5. Go to punk rock shows.
6. Studs are important. Row Leather Conical Stud Belt, even more important.
7. Remember it's all about being yourself! Good punk colors: Black, red, white, navy blue, and neons (pink neon is a good choice though).
8. Reading Books Is good , Tv is not.
11. Listen to punk bands like The Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Iggy and the Stooges, Buzzcocks, etc.

12. Forget all about fashion alone and care about something. Apathy is conformity, take back your desire to change the world. Get head over heels into veganism, feeding the homeless, whatever. Food Not Bombs is great because it's considered a "terrorist organization" by the government. Or celebrate "Buy Nothing Day". Just get a passion. Don't shut up about it either.
13. Make your own stuff. Grow food plants on your fire escape. Tomatoes are good because you can fertilize them with used coffee grounds. Check out books like Food Not Lawns. Learn to knit and get free patterns from sites like knitty. Quit buying so much, you consumerist sheep. Do you really even need all that crap? You wouldn't be a wage slave if you weren't up to your eyeballs in credit card debt for stuff you only want because the TV said you should.

And my favorite one.......................
14. Be angry. This one is important. Look around you at this world. If you're not angry, you're asleep.

Now. This really did make me laugh. I always just thought that you made your own rules. Your own paths as a punk. There are no guidelines, no rules. It doesn't matter what era of punk you like. As long as you feel the music. Ok. I prefer the likes of The Clash, Buzzcocks etc. But I also like Rancid, NOFX and Green Day. I don't wear thrift clothes, I dont spike my hair. I don't knit as the cost of buying the pattern and the wool is extortionate. I'm in credit debt as the cost of living is just so high.

What's the point in being angry at the world? There are things in the world that frustrate and annoy me but if I'm angry 24/7 then I'm going to lead a miserable and crap life. And I'm sorry, but life is for living and making the most out of what you have and can do.

Be happy. Have fun and don't worry what anyone but the people you love have to say.

Gosh I just realized that turned into a major whinge! haha.

Best Male Singer, ever?

May 31st 2008 12:42
Looking on the internet for topics to write about I came across something very interesting. Most "lists" or "best of thingys" much of the same title as above, best male singer in the world all generally have the same man at the top.

Mr Robert Anthony Plant. Of course lead singer of Led Zeppelin and who also forged a pretty decent solo career - performing with the great Jimmy Page

My top two favorite albums

May 30th 2008 16:29
It will be an argument that will rage for decades to come, what is the best album of all time? Every has their staple artists or albums that they will always say that is the best. But if course that is everyones opinion.

There is always one or two albums in your collection that you listen to religiously. The ones where you can listen to them over and over again, from start to finish and never tire from it

Moving on from my rant yesterday I bought a new CD last night. The third album by Danish punk band Horrorpops.
The Album is called Kiss Kiss Kill Kill and I have to admit, I LOVE IT! Unlike most reveiews I read of their first two major released albums (Hell Yeah and Bring it on! <-- my favorite) I thought that Bring It On! was a far better album than the first Hell Yeah. But Kiss Kiss Kill Kill beats both.

Agreed Geoff! I think its healthier to be open to lots of different types of music and not restricted to just one.

LOl. I know! It just really amused me that there are people out there that have to ask how to be something... as you guys pretty much all say... be yourself!
Sure I like punk music but I dont dress like one... does that make me less punk.... honestly? I really couldnt care less lol.

on Matt Le Tissier - one of the greatest ever?

May 31st 2008 23:53
I agree. Im a Portsmouth fan and you would find, secretly, alot of Pompey fans would totally agree with you. Matt was one hell of a class player. Very under rated and the best thing I think is that he was so loyal to Scu.. oppssss.... Southampton (he he sorry had to....)
No he was a top player.
