"Kaitlyns Photography!!"

May 18th 2007 18:06
Kaitlyn is sooo getting into photography. so much so that she's thinking about taking Photography as a major, and art as a minor for college. i have been HUGE in photography for years, just self teaching, although i did take a class. just an away class, but dropped due to business in art and so switching to art was better for me at the time. when i finish art i may go back and take photography again. i'm not sure. there are soo many classes i want to take. my daughter Kaitlyn is interested in just about all the same clases as i am. she would actualy go to colege though instead of an away. she'd love to do photography, fashion design, architec, massage thearapy.... it's time to be narrowing things down. i have half of myphotography course. so i told her she should start taking it, see if she likes it.maybe i can tie it into homeschool next year. i also have my artist class stuff. she could take that.

i just wanted to share some of her recent pics.

Tammy ...

As a creative soul, I have to agree with this ...

it's time to be narrowing things down.

I 'majored' in creative writing but two of my electives were 'photography' and 'computer animation' ... so it's not like you don't get to do the others ... or become quite proficient in them, but you just cant do all three as 'professions' (unless of course you want to be at college for 9-12 years) ... Or become the eternal student ...

And you can always change majors if you find you like one more than the other ... but picking the one you're most passionate about is certainly the key to it all ... at the start ... (because creative souls are generally capable of plying more than one art/craft/trade ...

But, I also think the creative soul is never truly happy if they're a 'jack of all trades and master of none' ... They seem much more content if they master one ...

David, it's such a HUGE thing picking when your interested in sooo many things. her's all seem to be around "Art" in different forms. i'm sooo glad i have material for two of the things she's into, That way she can try them on for size before diving into college for them.
her creativity amazes me!! i have "no" idea where she gets it from!<grins>
she'll be 18 this july and her life is realy just begining. i try and support her in all her dreams, but also help her to figure out what she wants to do. it's sooo easy to wnat to do "Many" things. Thats how i am but for me, my husband makes a living to where i "Can" do taht, without it affecting our lives. Kaitlyn is young, and i wnat her to grow up to be able to take care of herself and not have to rely on anyone to do it for her. she is VERY indapendent in her Thinking and i think will do wonderful in taking care of herself and her needs.
Thanks, Tammy

Tammy ...

At least she's narrowed it down to a 'field' as in, Art ...

That's a huge start ...

I don't think it matters that much initially what Kaitlyn chooses to 'major' in at college ... As long as all five electives (or however many they have over there) are in the 'Arts' field ... She'll know which one to choose definitively when the time comes ... It's more important that she dabbles in more than one art form to reach that conclusion or decision ...

And it just happens ... each individual artist goes through it ... there are just 'defining moments' along the way ... I remember getting to the stage where I had to choose between writing and 'graphics' ... There were a couple of considerations that swayed me towards writing ... 1. the cost of overheads involved in 'graphics' (as in continually upgrading IT hardware and software and keeping up to speed with all the changes - and having the latest equipment - that just didn't appeal to me, but it will to others - we're all in different financial positions or situations) 2. I couldn't do both. They're two different trades. And my real passion lies in words. I can paint pictures with words ... I'll leave those who prefer using paintbrushes to do what they do best ...

Tammy,

Great photos! And that's an understatement! I would encourage Kaitlyn to go for the Photography major--she'll definitely succeed!

Best wishes,

Kaity excells at so many things, it doesn't surprise me she'd have trouble trying to reduce herself to one "favorite".

I would have said exactly what David said if he hadn't have said it first. Okay, no, I wouldn't have, but what he said is brilliant, so I'll just second that...

I think it's a great idea to try things on for size, and it's wonderful that you're willing to incorporate her interests into her homeschool lessons. That's one of the great things about homeschooling, and that's being able to customize the lessons to the needs and learning patterns of the student.

They're beautiful photos.

I personally think photography is a brilliant and very complimenting skill to have. For example, if you're a major in writing (journalism), marketing, fashion and such, photography does come in handy.

I've worked with people in the business/marketing field who found it really useful to be skilled with the camera when they need to take that odd internal corporate photo or two for websites, newsletters etc.

Awesome photos by the way!

David, yeah, i'm sooo Thankful all her interest are some sort of Art. That makes it easier. she is a very creative child and i LOVE that. she's going to do art/photography this year for homeschool. That way she can see if thats where she wants to head still when the time comes. her uncle said he can probably get her an art scholorship for college. <crossing fingers> that would be HUGE and she's very excited.
Thanks, Tammy

What beautiful photo`s - they capture the emotion not just the scenery which is not really something a lot of people can do. I particularly like that first one... the way that Kaitlyn has used the foreground shrubbery and overhanging branches to naturally frame the trees in the background. That perspective is very important in photography.

It sounds like Kaitlyn is on the right track and with such positive encouragement from you and your family I am sure she will achieve all of her dreams. The Arts are so overlooked in the world yet they are so important and the skills that come along with them can spread across the board... work, life, love... you name it!

Good on ya Kaitlyn... much luck for your future.

Wendi, we are sooo excited about this school year. she's going to do a artist/photography section. we'll use my class suplies for each, learning all about photography and art. it'll be fun. we're also HUGELY excited about covering the holocaust.
we're sooo excited she has been talking about it and wants to start those three parts when the other two leave on sunday. we have seven weeks!! Chis is doing the Holocaust too and Krystina just for fun, so we'll leave some of taht. or i could teach Kaity and she could then help teach the other two, refreshing herself.
