Just a two dimensional character in a three dimensional world

November 16th 2008 22:29
There are few things more tragic than seeing hearing, or witnessing the lengths someone will do to feel less lonely in this world. The irony of loneliness is that you as an individual are one of six billion people on this planet and yet some of us don’t have one single solitary friend. Not one in six billion. So to ease the pain of being alone some people will dive into activities to feel less alone. Some things like hobbies that take the mind off and feel the body feeling refreshed or energized. In a recent study it said that lonely/depressed people watch more television than those who are happy and sociable. That is entirely plausible. I have no problem with that. Television is to entertain and to occupy time. That’s human nature to withdraw when we’re unhappy.

Saying all of that I was surprised (although at my age nothing should really surprise me anymore) that the lengths that people will go to feel emotionally connected to someone or something. I go as far as the pet animal being a part of the family (but I draw a very firm and deep trench at pet acupuncture and pet psychics but especially the psychics. In fact, if anyone ever offered to read my pet’s mind I have the aforementioned trench already dug for such auspicious occasions).

It wasn’t so long ago (and I kid you not about this) that a Japanese man had set up a petition to have legalized marriage between a human (herein mentioned as 3d) and a two dimensional character (ie a cartoon character but from here on in mentioned as 2d). There is something abnormally wrong with the whole concept of this kind of thing. I’m not going to go into the abnormality of the 3d that want this thing to happen (that is very very apparent). The thing is that there were people who were signing the blasted petition! Why? Have we as a society, totally lost it?

The man who set up the petition said he feels more comfortable in the 2d world than the 3d world. I’m not sure how he can get from 3 to 2d permanently. I’m trying to still figure out how would a marriage like this work in 3d. If anyone reads this could they enlighten me on this because I seemingly being one of the “normal” people just don’t get it.

What happens when the power goes out? Obviously, there can never be any physical contact between them, so if the marriage is never actually consummated does that still make it legal? What if someone wants to marry the 2d and find it’s already married? Knowing the Japanese it may very well cause someone in the land of the rising sun to cause them to pull an early sunset on their own lives. Well if they’re that obsessed over an imaginary 2d anything’s possible.

There’s an industry right there…creating 2d people just for 3d people to marry. As PT Barnum said “There’s a sucker born every minute”. In fact, you could go as far as being the wedding coordinator and person to marry them. Just make sure you collect all the money up front before the nuptials are signed. The 3d is ecstatically happy right after the ceremony (not quite sure if the wedding night/honeymoon would be such a happy occasion though) and if you charge enough for your services then you’re happy too!

Why would anyone think that this is strange because it’s not entirely new, people have married animals before (a woman married a dolphin one time) and another woman did actually get married to the Berlin wall (not at the wall, to the Wall itself. That marriage didn’t last too long though. I hear it crumbled around 1990. Sorry. I couldn’t help myself) so why should marrying a digital image be any different?

Seriously, imagine the following scenarios…you ask about someone’s spouse and they pull out their wallet/purse, open it and show you a picture of a 2d and try to convince you that the 2d in their wallet/purse is in fact their spouse? Or you go to their house because they want you to meet their spouse, and as you walk in posters of this 2d character confront you. You’d begin to think that the 2d is a little strange…only to find out that the 3d’s spouse is on the poster! It’d be a little awkward wouldn’t it looking at computer generated images of the 3d and the 2d at their “wedding”? It’d be even harder not to pick up and run when you realize that the only way you can meet the “spouse” is to turn on the computer or put in a DVD.

Funnily enough sometimes, I think on whom the persons are who want this and I try and look a little deeper than their strange request. Is it them or is it society that has gone awry? Are they just a sign of a sick society? Has society pushed these people to look for love and companionship beyond what we, as “normal”, rational people, would consider the realm of reality? Is the new depth that we have sunk to? Marrying digital images?

You think it may well be hard trying to explain to a child why they have two mommies or daddies, Well, try telling a young mind why mommy or daddy has a spouse who doesn’t officially exist except on a screen or on a piece of photographic paper.

God bless technology for unhinging another screw in the senses of the Japanese and humanity in general.
