Just yesterday i lost my mobile phone at the public library, and assessing the situation and evidences, i concluded that somebody must have stolen it. The person chose to steal it instead of reporting it to the front desk as lost item. Many many hours have passed and i still couldn't kept wondering how anybody would ever think of stealing it instead of reporting it to the officer as lost item.
Well, perhaps the person who pick it up is a janitor whose work everyday is to keep the cleanliness of the library and just living with barely enough salary every month to meet his family needs. If that is the case, i'm pretty fine, i'd just consider it as a donation for his better well-beingness.
But then that may not always be the case, when my relatives here in singapore first heard about my lost mobile phone, they could only remark that high chances that somebody must have taken it away. And it seems to be so, as when i inquired to the help desk counter about it, they said that nobody has reported any of such my mobile phone.
I was irritated with the idea that somebody must have taken it, it kept me thinking and thinking for the next many hours, "How could somebody with their conscience choose to do such a thing?" I thought it was highly abnormal, but i am pretty sure it is perfectly normal and senseful at all for the other person who theft it, he must have his own philosophy and thinking that justifies his act of doing as a correct deed. In my heart, i feel curious to investigate more of the motives and the person's way of thinking.
In anyway, i think couldn't agree very much any justification that he might come up with, except if he is in urgent need of money, because his misdeed is destructive!
Not in the mere sense that i lost money and he did bad karma or sin or whatever, but it's impact on the society! Who is the society? He, himself, his family, his beloved and his own children and future generations! He is creating much difficulty and burden for himself and for his many future generations to come! By doing such misdeed, he promotes the distrust-ness and suspiciousness of the society towards one another. If such misdeed continues, regardless of who does it, soon it will just be count of time that nobody in his society trust anybody else anymore. People may start creating mechanism or or system or procedures or inspections to prevent such misdeed from happening. And what does it means to himself and his family and his whole down 9 generations to come? More inconvenience, burden, and difficulties. Not only that, the social gap between one person with another will widen, soon it would be become much harder for one stranger to gain contact with another stranger, because each of them are already filled with presumptions, suspicions, and distrust towards the other person, for the sake of their own survival. As time goes on, things would get much more complex and difficult for his grandchildren, unless the morale of the society changes.
Look at where all those misdeeds have brought us, troublesome immigration system, precaution system here and there, this and that id and fill-up forms, this and that troublesome and time wasting procedures, and so on! We no longer have the privileges our ancestors enjoy as being part of virtue-ful and trustful society. Life wasn't this complex and sophisticated during those ancient times when people live to their virtue and honor. Despite of the advancement of technology, as decades pass, life system gets more and more sophisticated and complex, not in positive meaning, but sophistications in meaning as unnecessary obstructions for the innocents.
What can we do about it? Firstly, we must realize that we are all interconnected and each one of us are each very important molecule of the society. Think of a glass of milk as a society, and 1-2 misdoers as 1-2 drops of ink. Just with the presence of 1-2 drops of ink, the milk is no longer drinkable. Or let's say in a factory, we happened to drop 10 false broken toy machine upon a random pile of thousand other same good toy machine, that just to maintain the satisfying quality for the consumers, all the workers there had to go crazy one and night testing again one by one which one works and which one doesn't. Just because of 10 stupid broken toy machine amongst other 1000 good toy machines!!! Think of how irritating that kind of situation is! The same thing with our society, once a very small but significant number of us start doing a misdeed, all the other 90% of the innocent got the dirt.
Many people think that they are such a smart person when they are able to overcome and bypass a system or two for their own selfish purposes and greediness, but in fact, they are among the most ignorant, the most foolish and the most condemned ones that makes the world difficult for themselves, for their family and loved ones, and for their future many generations to come. So before you start thinking of doing such thing, think again, are you really willing to be the pain in the ass of everybody's?
Think, do we have any idea how much energy and effort does it takes to restore the things back to its original condition again? It's as hard as gaining back trust from somebody you have repeatedly lied and lied again. If we really want to gain back the trust of the society member towards one another, we must move in coordinated way for a very long period of time until the trust is regained back. But while on the progress, if even just a few number of us deviate, things will return back to its hellish state again and we have to start over again. If we are up to this re-trusting work, we must work, together as one.
Really, think again, to create and to restore/fix is 1000x work than destroying it. The ancient wise teased, "It takes only a few hours for a fool man to destroy a hut, but it takes years of mastery and hardwork for the carpenter to built/fix it back.
Therefore the best solution is not to fix the problem, but to create trust among one another while prevent any distrust of seeding itself in our society. Even let's say we might not have the chance to enjoy the fruit of the labor of trust, chances are high if we work hard enough on it, our children and future generations would not need to have their mind filled with suspicion, anger, distrust, and isolation towards other people.
Remember this, remember this very well, and may it be the guide in our life as member of society:
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
