It's not often (in fact unheard of) that a swimwear trend appears and you're immediately certain you'll look divine in it. Well suddenly here it is - the vintage swimdress - and it just shows if you wait around long enough, a fashion trend will reappear that you knew was right for you if only you lived in the era. All we have had to do is wait fifty years. The flattering 'swimdress' has returned, shielding innocent onlookers from belly bulge and (horror) pubic indiscretion.
Of course, Michael Kors' version is very St Tropez/Resort, but that's usually the look we are trying to achieve when we are scooping dead beetles out of the skimmer box- isn't it? Perhaps in his wisdom, he designed the matching bag for scattering the dead on the garden bed.
If you can't bring yourself to sport the pious style, here is Juicy Couture's interpretation. Almost looks like a Victoria's Secret night ensemble (maybe you'll have two outfits in one).
Of them all, I really think Urban Outfitters (above) have the look nailed. Vintage and polka dots - a match made in heaven!
Have fun flaunting yourself this summer and if you're concerned about the expense of new togs - consider the money you will be saving on Nair.
Sometimes a hat is too much. However, plain old hair just doesn't seem right with the lovely 50's inspired floral dresses that are all about this summer. For those of you who lie awake at night and ponder this fashion dilemma, there is a solution - glammed-up hair combs.
As you can see from the Maria Elena version above, you can have a gorgeous floral arrangement in your hair quite easily, as the artificial flowers are simply secured to a trusty old hair comb. They are quite makeable (is that a word) really and if I could just set aside my children, house, job and cat for a day, I might even attempt to create my own.
Why stop at flowers - Lotus Lulu hasn't, hers are a fabulous gathering of butterflies. Blue Marmalade has designed hers with beads.
If the whole hair corsage thing is a bit much for you, just a few decorated bobby pins a la Emily Wootton, might be more your style.
Have a good hair day.
In my usual manner of finding something with a history to make a part of my future, this season I have rediscovered the beauty of vintage costume jewellery. It's not hard to uncover, in fact I'm sure most of us have bits and pieces entiwined around each other at the bottom of our faithful old jewellery boxes. Now is the time to go and see what you have.
These gorgeous pink/old gold beauties I found coincidentally at the same time as this pink ruffle top - charity shop of course. I think they shall be attending a drinks night together shortly.
Even my faithful old denim jacket has been given a treat - I picked up this mother of pearl and faux gold brooch to decorate her with for $3.99. The wonderful thing about vintage brooches is that you can add them to simple daytime handbags for some evenng sparkle.
These baby blue beads were just the ticket for a floaty cotton smock I'll be wearing a lot of soon. I even love the fact that the catch is tarnished - these beads obviously have a past. And what's more they work well with my ...
Boden dress (which came courtesy of ebay UK for a steal). So there is definitely a theme going for me this Spring/Summer.
Talented Lori makes her own pieces (above) by dismantling or collecting vintage odds and ends and restringing them.
My plan is to pick up pieces as I see them and have a colour selection on hand to choose from. This is a very inexpensive way to build a nice little collection of jewels - that will last. My theory is, If a piece has made it to 2009, you can be pretty sure it has been linked-to-last (unlike chainstore costume bling that falls apart on the second outing).
Sometimes though, it is nice to own something because it is simply lovely to look at. Therefore, this is often one of my last glimpses at night - go find yourself some pretty stuff to glimpse at too.
Never in the fashion scene, has there been a better time to wear 'sensible' dresses as there is now. Anything floral, floaty or forties is just the ticket - and who better to head straight to for a fix of this fashion type, the vintage queen hereself- Cath Kidston. Cath stocks a gorgeous range of vintage skirts, blouses, dresses and knits, that will have you sorting your ration coupons or knitting for the war effort in no time

With this sudden onset of Wintery chill, I'm sure your boots, coats and wraps are out of the cupboard and keeping you warm. Have you considered how your wallet, keys and phone are feeling? Well here are some toasty felted (very stylish) clutches to keep them snug

My washing machine has been working overtime since Naughty Agapanthus has taken a new path into felted bags. As chief designer, managing director and CEO of my single employee company, I made a unilateral decision to produce a range of bags for the coming cooler season from the very fashion forward textile - felt

With the sudden influx of UK families here on the Mornington Peninsula, I have had the opportunity to talk fashion to Northern Hemisphere girls. A common lament from them has been that they have had to leave their beloved Boden store behind. Intrigued by a fashion label that evokes such passion in a group of like-minded women, I had to check it out. So after a quick surf, I became a convert

I recently had a nice full fringe chopped back into place, and I must say it has had its benefits. It sits at eyelash length, so I can actually observe situations through it without it being obvious. More importantly though, any thoughts I may have had about botox are now redundant, as the fringe covers the furrows. But best of all, a (very astute) friend likened my look to Uma Thurman's character in Pulp Fiction
