Hilary aint no Robert

July 1st 2008 13:33
You know the real problem with democracy.

You need to get people to like you.

That's hard.

Billionaires from all over the world have tried top run for office and have been denied because they are unlikeable.

You can't force people to like you, mostly.

Democracy is often a popularity test.

Hilary Clinton's biggest problem was that she was seen as too strong and too uncaring, so she started crying.

Her tears were Titanic.

Robert Mugabe doesn't have to cry.

Or be rich.

He was put into power during a vacuum, and has sucked the life out of his country ever since.

But now he has worked out three rules that mean he will always love democracy.

Stand unelected.

Kill anyone who stands against you.

And rig the votes.

It's really that simple.

Mugabe is now the world's most hated democratically elected head of state.

At this stage no one has decided to do much about it.

Even the cricket world, which loves to take the moral high ground, is not sure what to do with Mugabe.

If he had oil surely someone would have attacked him.

If he was white surely someone would have dethroned him.

And when Zimbabweans start winning Nobel peace prizes for surviving him Actors will start doing fund raisers to defeat him.

That's democracy for ya.

Democracy, not just for game shows

June 30th 2008 11:56
No one takes voting more seriously than reality TV “stars”.

The debate, they internalise it, the explain it, the committee it and then they vote.

They can explain why they did it with such clarity that you are almost impressed at how someone this desperate for fame has a brain.

Get these same people in the real world and they would never put this much time or effort into voting an a real election.

That just doesn’t matter as much as sending someone off an island.

In real life, if they were American they probably wouldn’t vote at all.

If they were British or Australian they would vote with their parents or peer group and not be able to tell you the keys points of difference between the parties.

Modern democracy is a spectator sport.

In America voting is on a Tuesday.

Nothing should ever be on a Tuesday.

Only the most angry and passionate voters make it to the booth.

While that should mean good things, it instead means George Bush.

In Australia everyone votes.

No one can tell the difference between the two parties anymore, and the new leader from the left, seems to be a younger carbon neutral copy of the old leader from the right.

So what is the answer?

As always, it’s pitch forks.

Jesus is a vote winner

June 30th 2008 07:55
The world feels like an uncomfortable place when Christian evangelists want to vote for the Democrats in America.

When it’s us Vs them, it all makes sense, but every now and then the Christians change the rules.

Us lefty pinkos are flip floppers of the highest order.

We do so with breathtaking regularity, but Christian Evangelists have been set in their ways since they were a gleam in their fathers eyes.

But even Evangelism is changing.

Today’s younger generation may love Jesus, but they no longer hate gays or care about abortion. Shocking.

Now they think the environment and social justice are important.

Are they Christians or Hippies I ask you?

What they are really doing is blurring the line.

Making harder for you and I to hate uniformly.

Now we have to check what the individual Evangelical believes before casting our aspersions.

And that takes time.

At the centre of these new hippy Christians is the authors of a new book “Jesus for President”.

They are completely ignoring the facts, Jesus can’t be President.

He’s dead.

Top 5 reasons Jesus can’t be president that have nothing to do with the fact he is dead.

5 He has facial hair.

4 He may be Christian, but he also has strong ties to Catholics and Muslims.

3 Walking on water is no longer a guarantee for pre selection.

2 He doesn’t have a lady wearing power suits by his side.

1 He’s not black or a war veteran.
