Brad and Ange's Family Album

August 17th 2008 00:31
Since welcoming twins Vivienne Marcheline and Knox Leon into the world just over a month ago, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have shared pictures of their brood in a beautiful photo shoot taken on their property in the south of France. Here are some of the best.

I watched this film for the first time last night, and absolutely LOVED it, so was rather surprised to find that it had received lukewarm reviews. Personally I found it to be both entertaining and informative, though I'm told that historically, it's not entirely accurate. This does not bother me: it's a fascinating tale nonethless, of love, sibling rivalry, attempted incest, and ambition in the court of Henry VIII.

Natalie Portman plays the infamous Anne Boleyn, a beautiful, shrewd and highly intelligent girl who has her eye on the prize: becoming the Queen of England. Her younger sister Mary - stunningly portrayed by the often-underrated Scarlett Johansson - is kinder and less ambitious, and falls for the king's considerable charms. Although he is still married to Catherine of Aragon, she has been unable to bear him a male heir and so he takes on Mary as a mistress. After Mary falls pregnant, however, he quickly loses interest and turns his attentions to her beguiling older sister.

Natalie Portman and Eric Bana

Anne soon demonstrates that her ambitions are of greater priority to her than the love of her family, and sets about enchanting Henry with her dazzling combination of brains and beauty. He falls for her so completely that he separates England from the Catholic Church and creates divorce laws, allowing him to leave Catherine for Anne. The latter is shrewd enough to avoid sleeping with him until the crown is placed firmly on her head.

The drama and intrigue that follows is truly captivating, and ends with both Anne and her brother George (Jim Sturgess) being decapitated for treason - more specifically, for the allegation that they committed incest. There are some truly dark and desperate moments in the film as the Boleyns attempt to salvage the mess that their lives have become.

Scarlett Johansson in one of her many extravagant costumes

Portman is brilliant, as always, and Johansson gives a performance that shows her considerable diversity as an actress. It's Eric Bana as Henry VIII, however, that really blew me away - he is so convincing, so haughty and smart and handsome, that he truly owned the role. I didn't see Eric Bana, I saw Henry VIII. He's come a long way since his days as an Aussie comedian! Kristin Scott Thomas was also very impressive as the Boleyn girls' mother; her character showed strength, intelligence, and a burgeoning belief in a woman's power.

Overall, I found The Other Boleyn Girl to be a lush, tantalising portrayal of life in the courts of Henry VIII. Beautifully set, very well acted, with a great score and fetching costumes, it's the kind of film that both men and women would enjoy. It's one to rent if you're looking for a period drama that is neither stiff nor boring like so many other films of its genre.

How to dress like a model

August 15th 2008 02:47
Now, I'm not talking about the clothes models wear on the catwalk or in magazines - that's a no-brainer. If you want those clothes, simply go out and buy them. What I'm talking about is dressing like a model who is on her day off and has been snapped by the paparazzi eating lunch, shopping or hanging with friends.

Gisele Bundchen

The first thing you'll notice is the clean lines of her outfit, the simplicity of the designs she's wearing, and how flattering her clothes are on her body. More often than not, she'll be wearing well-cut jeans and a simple shirt, jumper or tank top, or a monochromatic dress. It's rare that you see a model wearing something outlandish that screams "look at me!" because she gets enough attention for her beauty as it is. Models know how to dress in a way that doesn't overpower the eye: they wear the clothes, as opposed to clothes wearing them. Often you won't remember exactly what it is they were wearing, just that they looked fabulous in it.

Alessandra Ambrosio

Cindy Crawford

Models rarely wear makeup when they're not working - they don't need to - and so you should keep your makeup as natural-looking as possible if you want to emulate this style. A bit of concealer to conceal blemishes, powder to erase shine, mascara to enlarge the eyes and a smear of lip gloss should be all you'll need. You'll also find that they rarely wear high heels unless they're on the catwalk or at some promotional event. When your legs are as long as a model's, heels can make you look almost freakish in a non-catwalk, non-photo-shoot environment.

Kate Moss

Elle Macpherson

A key factor in a model's day-off outfit is that her accessories will always be up-to-the-minute. A model knows what's hot in the world of accessories - that is, hats, jewellery, belts, scarves and sunglasses - and she often gets them for free as a gift for that day's photo shoot or fashion show. The beauty of this is that accessories are relatively cheap, and they update any outfit, so be like a model and stock up on new accessories regularly. But don't overdo your accessorising - details should never overpower the clothes themselves.

Miranda Kerr with boyfriend Orlando Bloom

Keeping your hair clean and shiny, your skin blemish-free, your figure reasonably trim and your posture upright will all help in making you look like a model, because being a model is not just about clothes; it's about attitude, and presence. Having a simple but stylish outfit with updated accessories will add to these important factors and will make you look as much like a model as your natural beauty allows.

Attractive people have easier lives

August 15th 2008 01:25
Even though good-looking people are known for bitching and moaning about being attractive - e.g. "My looks intimidate men!" and "other women hate me because I'm beautiful"- research has repeatedly shown that the more aesthetically pleasing you are, the easier your life will be. And not just because you can make easy money modelling!

Christian Bale will not face charges

August 15th 2008 00:19
Batman star Christian Bale will not face charges for an alleged assault on his mother and sister last month, prosecutors said. Bale had been accused of assault by his mother the night before the London premiere of his wildly successful film The Dark Knight, but now it has been found that there was insufficient evidence to afford a "realistic prospect of conviction".

Bale firmly denies assaulting his family

Paris Hilton isn't exactly what you'd call a Hollywood player, but she has had cameos in movies such as Zoolander and small roles in films like House of Wax and the 2006 flop National Lampoon's Pledge This! It is for the latter movie that she is being sued by the film's distributor, for not doing her part to promote the straight-to-DVD film. Apparently Paris ducked out of her publicity duties for the film - for which she was paid US$1 million to star in - and so the heiress will owe US$75,000 in damages for failing to provide "reasonable promotion and publicity" for the movie.

Not so hot

If you live in Australia then surely you've spotted the proliferation of frangipani stickers on the rear windows of cars. These sickly sweet, vaguely offensive and completely unnecessary icons of femininity seem to accost you in traffic, everywhere you go. Three years ago it may have been original to whack one of these stickers on your car, but now it is so popular that there is actually an anti-frangipani movement emerging. One facebook group - 'Frangipanis on cars: AUSTRALIA SAYS NO' - has more than 4,000 members, and that number is steadily growing.

Adrian Grenier and Isabel Lucas split

August 13th 2008 00:14
Entourage actor Adrian Grenier and Aussie starlet Isabel Lucas have split up, according to reports. The two appeared loved-up and happy following Isabel's car accident (in which her Transformers 2 co-star Shia LaBeouf, who was driving, sustained serious damage to his hand) but her rep has now confirmed that Lucas "is single".

In happier times

Hi there, applying a protective balm to your hair will minimise damage, but if you're straightening every day it will still get wrecked over time. Why not try to embrace your waves? There are naturally straight-haired women who would kill for a bit of body in their hair... but then we always want what we can't have. Hope this helps, thanks for commenting!

Hey, thanks mate! It's always nice to get good feedback.

You're right about the happy expressions being a common attractive feature in both sexes, they've done studies where people rank the attractiveness of others in photos who are smiling, then not smiling, and the smiley ones far outrank the sour expressions.

If you're a Japanese guy, then having a happy face is even more important, as Aussie chicks tend to think of Japanese dudes as being serious, bordering on cold, and very intelligent. Smiling at them will let them know you're not all seriousness.

Nothing wrong with being intelligent - and I can tell that you are, because your writing is perfect, even as a second language - though it may intimidate dumber girls. But then, you wouldn't want them anyway. Cheers for the comment

on Shopping at the Singles Market

Hmmmm.... interesting post ethan.

You've made a few big generalizations, particularly the one about men being more confident than women. In my experience, men and women are equally confident.

Also, not every single girl is a loser, or unwanted - I get hassled for dates quite often, but am holding out for the right guy. I've been with some total idiots in the past and don't want to waste any more time being with guys who are not worthy of me. Right now, I'm attracted to absolutely no-one of my acquaintance. It probably just means that I need to get out more... or maybe there's something wrong with my hormones. Who knows.

At any rate, I enjoy reading your posts; sure they're arrogant a lot of the time, but I appreciate your honesty. Don't let anyone bully you into not telling it how it is.

on This Is How We Should All Act in Church.....

August 12th 2008 12:16
How bizarre. A headbutt?? That would have been funny to watch. You'd think that if she was going to turn violent on her bro, she'd simply slap him or something.

This isn't the first pic I've seen of Woody checking out Scarlett's boobs - when they were promoting Match Point the exact same thing happened. You'd think, as a major Hollywood player, he'd have the social graces to make his ogling less obvious, particularly knowing that he's being photographed! Scarlett appears oblivious but surely mustn't be.

Having said that, I love (most of) his films... and agree that we should judge him by his work, not his preference for young girls.

on 40 AND SHE'S STILL GOT IT

I've always loved Kylie, she's such a versatile performer - remember in the early 90s when she teamed up with Nick Cave for Where the Wild Roses Grow? Amazing.

I've never seen her live though, and really want to as everyone I know who's seen her live said she was spectacular. I don't care that she's been a little bit nipped and tucked, she's still beautiful!

on The Silence of the Lambs

August 12th 2008 10:16
Great article Bryn, The Silence of the Lambs is one of my all-time favourites (as you know) for the very reasons you outlined. Unlike JD I didn't find Hopkins to be hammy, he was downright scary IMO! So evil and frighteningly intelligent. I also felt connected with Jodie Foster's character in a way that I haven't felt with her since.

The scene that always chills me to the bone is when the senator's daughter spots the fingernails of Buffalo Bill's previous victims embedded into the walls of the pit she's in, and knows without a doubt that he's going to kill her. Horrifying!
