... Will Ferrell, according to a new list published at business analysis site forbes.com. The Old School and Talladega Nights star commands a high salary for his work, even though he is almost always typecast in the "man-child" role... no, make that always! Ferrell beat several other big names for the dubious honour, including Tom Cruise, Eddie Murphy and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Will Ferrell
Just overpaid... or overrated too?

For every dollar Ferrell is paid, his films earn an average of US$3.29. Doesn't seem terrible at first, until you compare him to the likes of Shia LaBeouf, who currently makes movie bosses an average of US$160 for every dollar he's paid.

A surprising addition to the list was Scottish star Ewan McGregor, as the second most overpaid actor in Hollywood. While he has had a number of hit films throughout his career (most notably, 1996's Trainspotting and the of-course-they-will-be-huge Star Wars films), his most recent movies have performed poorly at the box office. This has made him a bad investment for producers, despite the fact that he doesn't command nearly as high a salary as some of the other actors on the list.

Ewan McGregor
He might be overpaid, but this one has talent...

Taking a break

October 21st 2009 18:47
There comes a time in every blogger's life when there just aren't enough hours in the day left to write! My real life has suddenly become insanely busy, and so I've decided to take a month away from my blogs. A big thankyou to all of my readers, and I'll be back on the scene in late November. ~Journeywoman~

Kristen Bell talks fears and fantasies

October 16th 2009 00:11
With beauty, brains and talent, it would be easy for us to hate Kristen Bell... problem is, she's also a total sweetheart! The star of 2009's Couples Retreat and the animated buddy of 80s favourite Astro Boy sat down with Parade magazine and spoke of her insecurities about staying employed, the beauty of Bora Bora and getting into fistfights with Meg Ryan. These are the highlights, but you can read the whole thing here.

And the new face of Armani is....

October 15th 2009 01:54
Who else but the hottest face (and body!) in Hollywood right now... Megan Fox! She'll be the main model for the Emporio Armani 2010 Underwear campaign, with the ads hitting the public arena as soon as January. The ad campaign is likely to be Armani's sexiest yet, and will give all those Megan-haters out there even more of a reason to be jealous!

Hollywood legend Johnny Depp has told Germany's Joy magazine that he hopes his children decide not to follow in his footsteps. The 46-year-old father of two has always been wary of the industry that made him famous, and has now said that his "greatest fear" is that his two children will want to become actors.

News on Hollywood's Hobbit

October 14th 2009 05:02
Sir Ian McKellen, better known as Gandalf to fans of the Lord of the Rings series, recently had a chat with Empire Magazine about his upcoming projects. He'll be donning the wizard's garb once again in the two film versions of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, the first of which is due out in December 2011. It's a long way off, but already has diehard Tolkien fans anticipating a cinematic masterpiece.

Celebrity Hair: Leighton Meester

October 13th 2009 16:59
With her long, chestnut waves and gorgeous face, it was no wonder Gossip Girl author Cecily von Ziegesar thought Leighton Meester was "the perfect choice" to play Blair Waldorf in the TV series! This 23-year-old New Yorker is multi-talented: she's making her mark on the music scene, has a burgeoning film career, is a spokeswoman for the prevention of domestic violence, and has been applauded for her bold fashion choices. She's also pretty brave when it comes to her hair, as these photos show. Long, dark, blonde, shoulder-length, with fringe and without, Leighton's done it all... but as to whether she goes for the major chop like Blair did in the book series is anyone's guess! So which hairstyle do you think suits Leighton best?

And then there were three...

October 10th 2009 06:01
Given the recent surge in "third movie" installments, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Hollywood has been running out of ideas! The latest franchise to fall victim to the dreaded three is Ghostbusters, which is set to begin production on its third installment in a matter of months. Despite the fact that the sequel came out two decades ago, almost the entire original cast has been signed on for the third movie, and rumour has it that the original director Ivan Reitman will be taking the helm once again.

on Scarification is Not a Cry for Help

Okay, it's your blog and I can see we're not really getting anywhere here, and I've made my point so I'll leave it at that. It's nice to know that the issue has finally been given some thought.

"Self cutters generally cut for attention" - myth. This is the dangerous one!

"there are actually about 3-4 types of cutters" - myth. There are hundreds.

"In many cases, you'll have a self cutter who just wants attention; these people will generally cut themselves in the open where people can see, such as wrists, arms, legs, etc." - myth. Most cutters will go to excessive lengths to hide their cuts.

"suicidal thoughts" - myth. Cutters are rarely suicidal. Many are not considered mentally ill either.

Essentially your article is just not well researched in regards to the cutting references. I'm not a doctor yet, so when I write, I write about things I know, that do not have the potential to cause harm to people; I wouldn't consider publishing anything that I wasn't qualified to write about.

I know that bloggers would say "it's just a blog, it doesn't mean anything" but there are people who will believe anything they read. As such you need to be a bit more careful about writing things that have little to no basis in truth. Even if you personally know a cutter, they aren't representative of every cutter as they're one person in a huge and very diverse group.

I'm just suggesting that you stick to body art in the same way that I stick to hairstyles, fashion and Hollywood! Topics that don't have the potential to cause harm, and that we're currently qualified to write about.

on Wearing Wigs

November 16th 2009 04:19
I love coloured wigs, especially the chin-length bob ones like in that picture. I would never wear a wig that was meant to look natural because unless you pay a few thousand dollars for one made of real hair, they rarely do look like the real deal.

And with a coloured wig, you don't have to wreck your natural hair with dyes. Great post Whitney

I agree with anonymous - cutting is rarely, if ever, about getting attention. It's currently considered by psychologists to be an addictive behaviour that stems from the need to 'feel' emotional pain physically, however it's a very complex issue and so the cause will vary from person to person.

No offense intended here Whitney, but you're perpetuating some dangerous myths with this post.

Otherwise, scarification looks... interesting.

on Hate holds - Maine rejects same sex marriage

November 5th 2009 00:42
Great article Jeff, and how disturbing it is that in 2009 we STILL don't have social equality.

"Many will say "the voters have spoken." What do votes like this tell us? Sometimes voters are very wrong. There was a time in America that majorities supported slavery. Majorities supported denying voting rights to women. In other countries majorities have favored fascist agendas."

So true.

We don't have marriage equality in Australia yet, either. The problem is that social changes like these take such a long time to come about. Case in point: Australian Aborigines were classed as "fauna" - not human - until 1987. Little more than two decades ago... horrifying really!

Why do you think so many people balk at social equality, Jeff?

Excellent article, you nailed every point, in my humble opinion! The sad thing about this iphone application is that it'll probably be hugely popular... so many men just don't have a clue.

Just a thought - you should add some pictures to your posts. They tend to be what gets people in, and then your writing will keep them there.

on THEY BAN TORTURE PORN, DON'T THEY?

October 16th 2009 05:00
"Movies made that scrape the bottom of the aesthetic barrel should be banned, or at least have a big sticker on the poster or the DVD cover that warns any potential viewer that there are virtually no production values, intelligence, style, or atmosphere to be found in the following 90-odd minutes."

Love it! Problem is, that would account for more than 50% of movies being released these days.

I'm anti-censorship myself, although I sit on the fence when it comes to absolute extremes, e.g. brutal rape scenes or the justification of paedophilia. That's not to say I would watch this film - I personally don't have the stomach for it - but as free-thinking adults we should be given the right to make our own choices.

on News on Hollywood's Hobbit

October 16th 2009 04:50
Cool, I didn't know they'd be going beyond the Hobbit's pages, perhaps that's the reason for the two-film split.

I actually haven't seen any of del Toro's movies so I'll take your word for it! If he is, like McKellen says, very similar to Peter Jackson then there's got to be some ingenuity there. Just looked up that he'll be doing Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (one of my fave mini-novels!) and Frankenstein very soon as well. Busy man! He's making some good choices there, how nice to see a filmmaker who doesn't just think of the bottom line and the lowest common denominator of audiences... might have to become a fan. Cheers for the comment Bryn!
