Leaving for other prospects

August 3rd 2008 17:08
I have decided to go out on my own and start a blog outside of this lovely community.

I wanted to try out this service and see what the difference was between being in a community and being on my own. I can see the appeal with being on a site like Orble, but it just isn't quite what I want to be doing and I prefer to go it alone.

I will continue to read many of the writers on here. I'm appreciative of the chance to get to meet some really intelligent people both from my own country and others.

If someone is intereted in picking up where I left off, just let me know and I can see what we can do to get you going as the administrator here.

My new website is Really Long Link I've coped a few articles from here to there and given credit to this website, so anyone who would be interested in picking it up will have the benefit of the traffic that I will be producing on there.

Good luck to all!

I came across this story in the Washington Post.

According to their report, the mayor of Berwyn Heights or some members of his family were suspected of dealing drugs.

After the mayor picked up a package at the door containing marijuana, the police raided him and shot his two black labs.

The mayor claims to have no knowledge of what was in the package.

More innocent lives lost in the senseless war on drugs.

Yes- its true. In a bold move, the city of Los Angeles has decided to put a moratorium on new fast food chains in the South side. With obesity running out of control, the local government decided they need to regulate what kind of food comes into that area.

I'll bite and say that obesity is certainly out of control in the USA. Yes, we all eat way too much at fast food restaurants. Its sad when one of a toddler's first phrases is "chicken 'n fries."

Whose fault is it?

Well, it couldn't posssibly be my fault that I gained 10 lbs! All I did was eat at the esteemed golden arches 4 times last week and stopped by the king's place 5 times. Its the fast food company's fault for making such fatty food. They should really put nutritional information on those things. Oh, they already do? Well, they should give us some healthy alternatives. What's that you say? They have salad and fruit now? Really....hmm. Its the government's fault. They should really limit these restaurants so I stop eating at them.

Besides the obvious infringement on people's rights, a decision like this begs other questions.

Why do the fast food restaurants do so well in South LA? Because it is an impoverished community. When you don't have a lot of spare cash to feed your family, you want to get as much as possible for as little money as possible. Hell, I get excited when I go to taco bell for lunch and can feed my family with $10!

Why aren't there any sit-down restaurants in South LA? Its called supply and demand. There would be if there was demand for them.

Where does it stop? It won't. In the article, the restaurant association spokesperson Andrew Casana asks, "What's next — security guards at the door saying 'You're overweight, you can't have a cheeseburger'?"

I just read this report about a prison in Iraq that was never completed, that will never be used as a prison it at all, that has parts that will probably need to be demolished for substandard building, and that cost the US $40 million dollars.

What is most disturbing about the news is not the prison itself, but the company that was responsible for the building.

Gay marriage and the constitution

July 27th 2008 15:51
I've seen many arguments lately about gay marriage. I wrote an article not long ago debunking some of the popular myths about it effects on society, but now I feel the need to address it on a legal level (pertaining particularly to the US laws)

First and foremost, let me say that there is absolutely no definition of marriage in the constitution. It is up to rationally minded people to interpret what it does say

I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out why Obama is campaigning around the world.

He's going around giving the huge inspirational-type flowery speeches that he has already become famous for over here. He's quoted as saying things like, "People of Berlin, people of the world, this is our moment, this is our time" and "I speak to you not as a candidate for president, but as a citizen- a proud citizen of the United States and a fellow citizen of the world." As if we didn't already know that he was trying to be the new JFK

The housing bill that has been milling around Congress for a little while got Bush's approval today.

on his way to banks and homeowners
The bill gives assistance to those facing foreclosure. "The bill would let hundreds of thousands of homeowners trapped in mortgages they can't afford on homes that have plummeted in value escape foreclosure by refinancing into more affordable, fixed-rate loans backed by the Federal Housing Administration. Lenders would have to agree to take a substantial loss on the existing loans, and in return, they would walk away with at least some payoff and avoid the often-costly foreclosure process

The Immigration Test

July 22nd 2008 16:46
A few weeks ago, I received an invitation on facebook to take an immigration test. I took the bait and tried it out. It said you had to score 80% to be able to be a citizen. I was pretty ashamed when I scored a 70%, as I consider myself fairly knowledgable about my country.

I've seen quite a few of these floating around over the years. The one I took earlier was based on old questions. There is a new test starting in October of this year. MSNBC has a sample of the new test here. This one I scored an 80% on (which I'm still not happy about

Woman cited for spanking her child

A mother in Idaho was cited for spanking her child in public.

Several witnesses thought she was too difficult on her 2-year-old during a parade and called for police

Why are people so happy about this? I've seen numerous people rejoicing in the announcement earlier this month that Starbucks is closing 600 stores. People are actually saying "so what?" They are evil capitalists who own a mega corporation and cater to rich yuppies - right?

I would beg anyone who asks these questions to consider a few things

Thanks for stopping by Natalie and Ruby!

I'll have to check out that documentary natalie- thanks for the info!

There is so much wasted money going into the drug wars, not to mention the lives being hurt and sometimes taken over this ridiculousness. It is absolutely frustrating.

I guess my point is that we all KNOW how bad fast food is for us whether it is for chemicals or fat. It isn't up to anyone but us to decide if we want to eat it or not.

And yes- I do occassionally eat at Taco Bell while I'm out and about. I suppose I'm perverse in my own way too. There's nothing quite like a cheesy gordita crunch...

Great post Natalie- I'm not a very religious person, but i think that probably because of how badly "religion" has distorted things (as I witnessed after 13 years in catholic school). There need to more progressive people out there like you to spread these kinds of messages.
Great start to your new blog too! I'll be reading it often I'm sure!

on Gay marriage and the constitution

July 27th 2008 21:08
There is no law for or against marriage of any kind within our constitution. It is not defined whatsoever. It is up to us to interpret what it does say and put it up against the various situation that arise as I have above. The constitution is a living document, in that it adapts to changes within our society without the words having to be altered. When the constitution was written, it also was at a time when slavery was an issue. It later was interpreted to free them and later to end legislative racism. There are countless situations that have arisen since the constitution was written, yet it has stood the test of time and been able to guide us on the path our forefathers intended. It is not just a dusty old piece of paper. The document is written in such a way that it is able to adapt as our vision of who are actually "people" changes. The writers were brilliant men.

on Listen To En Vogue and FREE YOUR MIND!

I have to say- I really thought that much of this was in the past. Even my own father (74 years old propane worker ex-military) thought gays were going to hell until he found our his grandson was gay. If he can progress, I think anyone can. Perhaps I've just surrounded myself with more open minded people than many on here.

I remember when the Columbine shootings happened and everyone wanted to ban kids from wearing "goth" clothes because they thought it somehow created evil. As a former goth/punk kid I thought it was very sad. I wanted to call into every radio show and defend the rest of the kids that dressed like that. It seems to be a natural inclination of the close-minded to hate everyone different. They almost rejoice when someone unlike them commits a crime b/c then they can say that their way of life is the "right way" and try to change others in the name of safety or righteousness. It is like in the 80's when they said that being gay caused aids. It was an excuse to hate and try to change people.

As far as the Bible- I totally agree with Morgan. The Bible hs been so misinterpreted in more ways than I can count. In medieval times, people used it as an excuse to abuse their wives (check out st jerome). Now, they use it as an excuse to abuse gays. Isn't it strange that Mary Magdelene was taken down from a disciple to just a friend of Jesus? She is described as his closest follower and the one person he chose to witness his rebirth, yet she was somehow left out the mix and called a prostitute (although the Bible never calls her one.) You would think a mistake like that would have been caught by now, but I suppose that would mean great changes to the church and ackowledging that women are equal...women as priests instead of nuns and the like...oh the shame!

I suppose just as our parents lived through the real race wars, our generation will push the envelope further. I have hope for the future as long as there are intelligent ladies out there who keep their voices heard.

Now if we could just get all the bigots out of office...

You are right Katt- we absolutely don't have the resources to continue on like we do. Thats one of the reasons our national debt is climbing so high- we are using other countries' resources to keep up our escapades.

Safety is absolutely necessary- but what we need to do is concentrate on getting the people who actually attacked us and not those who haven't.

We've "freed" Iraq and now it is time to allow them to use that freedom to decide for themselves what they want to do with it.

on Healthcare plans we can't afford

July 26th 2008 14:26
The problem with the healthcare system the way it stands is that it is abused. Any fully insurance based system is flawed because there is always room for abuse.

Here's an example for you. We went 3 months without insuance for my husband when he changed jobs. He went to the doctor with an ear infection during that time. The doctor charged him half of the price for the visit that she would have charged the insurance company and gave him the medicine for free.
My sister does not have insurance either. She went to a speclialist for a foot problem she was having. She got a shot that he said normally gets charged $400. He told her he would figure something out. She got the bill in the mail and he charged her $100 for the shot and the visit.

In both of those situations, had they had insurance, the companies would have been paying several hundreds of dollars more. That is why insurance is so expensive.

The problem is that our current system does not allow for competition to ACTUALLY flourish. If insurance went back to being catastophic insurance alone as it was until the 1960s, doctors would have to compete on a monetary level.

As far as the emergency room, it is an absoute fact that people choose to go there because they cannot be refused care. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 55% of emergency room visits were unnecessary and great portion of those were uninsured patients. Talk to any hospital administrator and they will tell you that patients choosing to go to the emergency room instead of doctors is a fact.

on The Immigration Test

July 22nd 2008 20:40
Totally agree Winston.

I have seen immigrants come into our country and wonder why US citizens are so uninterested in their own country. I've met people who are just so grateful to be here and can tell me all the great things about out country compared to theirs that it makes me feel humbled. Then, I meet natural born citizens who can't even tell me who the VP is- it makes me so mad!
