Summer League stars of 2008

August 11th 2008 08:06
Ending on the 20th of July was the Las Vegas Summer league- well known for showing how rookies will fair in the NBA, the Summer League also showcases players that are on the verge of making it to the big time.

This years Summer league was dominated by Rookies of all shapes and sizes.

Jarryd Bayless showed unbelievable ability to get to the stripe. In his first game vs. Washington Bayless went to the line 23 times!!! hitting on 18 of them. He is also a great shooter from outside and makes unbelievable shot selections for a rookie (43% from long range). He is the ultimate rookie point gaurd even though he didnt pass much you know he can just by wittnessing his immense skills in all other facets of the game. He takes it to the rim hard and often and that allows him to get to the stripe with ease, averaging 14 free throws per game. He was awarded the MVP award after avergaing 30 points 4 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game.

Anthony Randolph was selected 14th in this years NBA draft by the warriors and was seen as a poor mans Kevin Durant.... Anthony has proved that he is better player!! at least in the Summer League. Randolph is a very different type of player than has been seen in the NBA. He's a 6-10 gaurd/forward with alien like movements. He's too unorthodox for defenders to read... with his unbelievable speed and ball handling ability for a man his size he'll create missmatches against nearly all opponents. He averaged 20 points 8 rebounds and had a 30 point 8 rebound 2 block/steal game againt Philly in his first game.

Kevin Love is an unbelievable rebounder. When you see him rebound amongst other big men it seems like the ball and his hands are magnetised. He doesnt have incredible athleticism or long arms but he does have a monstrous and quick body, those features mixed with rebounders intuition make him the leading rebounder in the Summer League with 13.5 a game. And although Love only averaged 1.8 assists per game (Not that there is meant to be that much passing in the Summer League) glimpses of brilliance were shown in the form of bullet bounce passes between 3 defenders and pin point full court outlet passes. K-Love can also score (averaged 18 ppg) haveing a 26 point game against Portland.

Marreesse Speights is a 6-10 Power Forward and future cornerstone of Philly. This guy can score with either hand using his sweet Al Jefferson-esc shot or Jason Maxiell-like power to punish defenders (averaging 18.2 points). His footwork is like a dancer as he throws numerous fakes and spins at his defender to get open or to the basket. He also uses his solid frame and great basketball I.Q. to tear down 10.2 rebounds per game. His best game in the Summer League was against Washington with 24 points 13 rebounds 2 blocks and 0 turnovers.

Donte Green is a T-Mac like player. He's 6-9 lanky, athletic and can score a whole bunch of points in a short space of time. In a game i watched him play against the Nuggets he had a 3 pointer 3 dunks in a row and then he dropped a terrible pass from a team mate which would have led to another dunk all in 4 minutes of play. In his first game of Summer League he scored 40 points on 12-20 shooting including 5-10 from 3. He followed that game up by scoring 17 and pretty much stayed around that mark for the rest of the tournament... which isnt bad usually but comparitively it's terrible. Hopefully he can play alongside T-Mac instead of behind him this season.

O.J. Mayo only needed to make one play to show that he is going to be a superstar. He took the ball along the baseline against his defender, two other defenders rotated under the basket, O.J. Jumps from outside the key hangs in the air for what seems like forever and while the three defenders drift by he decides to go the reverse which drops into the basket. And if that play wasnt enough Mayo shot 48% from 3 point range and showed intense defensive play. He should become the second option behind Rudy Gay and may play the Point or Shooting gaurd. he averaged 19 points and 3 rebounds.

Darrell Arthur, DJ Augustine, Andray Blatche, Joey Dorsey and Quincy Douby were some other stand outs at the Summer League this year and they will all be very successful in the NBA this upcoming season.

08-09 young breakout players NBA

August 11th 2008 07:55
This year the NBA seemed like it was dominated by young superstars such as Lebron James, Dwight Howard and Chris Paul to name a few. There were also some 2nd and 3rd year players that have shown glimpses of superstardom by taking over the roles of leading men on their respective teams.

This first guy was in the trade for Kevin Garnett and shows alot of the same skills as the Big Ticket. His name is Big Al Jefferson!!! This guy is a beast! he crashes the boards dunks on whoever is in his way with either hand and if he feels like it he'll stay outside and shoot jumpers just as well as any big in the L. In the 07-08 season he showed that he has the game to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves from the front, averaging 21ppg and 11rpg. The only stat he doesnt excel in is assists averaging 1.5 per game. But would you pass the ball if the next best player on the team was Rashad McCants?

Rudy Gay may have an unfortunate name but his skills as a basketball player far outshadow his parents cruel joke. He's a player with around the same physical stature of Lebron james and around the same athletiscism.... sort of. A difference between the two is that Rudy is a better shooter. Despite just finishing his 2nd season Rudy has well and easily become the Grizz's go-to-guy. His weakness is that he doesnt make his team mates better. But with a great young team quickly developing with new players O.J. Mayo, Mike Conley and Jarvis Crittenton i can see rudy passing the ball alot more and maybe becoming an All-Star!

Rajon Rondo is a lanky 2nd year player with great energy and smarts and a unique style. This season was a great improvement on his rookie campaign with Rondo showing he can pass and score solidly but also that he can run a team with his great knowledge of the game. With the the 3 player "justice league" Rajon has still played a big role and with expert advice being handed does from the justice league and Sam Cassell Rajon is set to be soon one of the best PG's in the game.

Al Thornton was NOT in the Rookie-Sophomore game this season despite finishing 4th in the Rookie Of the Year rankings. In the game after all-star weekend he showed the selectors how stupid they are by dropping 39 points and 5 steals on Memphis in the second best scoring game by a rookie last season (behind Kevin Durants 42). He can do it all... defend, rebound and score... dw about the passing. He is crazily athletic and solid and he's a shining light on the clippers future.

These players are the all stars of the future so look out for them.

2008 NBA Draft future studs and duds

August 11th 2008 07:44
In this years draft a large focus was on point gaurds and there were many talented 1 men to choose from. To no-ones suprize Derick Rose was chosen number 1 overall by Chicago. A great pick that is so confident in his ability that he thinks he can be MVP his first season.... Not with that team you cant Rosey boy.

Anyway onto my picks for the stars and duds of the Draft.

My number 1 favourite pick was Deandre Jordan. He was the biggest steal in the draft being picked in the 2nd round at 35. He's a 7 footer with a 7" 6' wingspan and hops. He catches anything thats thrown around the rim and he can run. The reason that he didnt get picked higher is that his offense just rely's on his physical attributes but i think he'll be a major player in a few years with the clippers.

Number 2 is Joey Dorsey!!!! This guy is huge physically. He had one of the highest bench press test results at the orlando pre-draft camp. He's only 6 foot 7 which is short for a Power Forward but he makes up for it with his quickness and jumping ability. He'll be a Jason Maxiell like player in the NBA but i expect him to be better. He will be one of the most exciting players to watch.

Next is O.J. Mayo who is a steal even at pick number 3. He is a smart savvy player with unlimited potential. His smooth jump shot and incredible hops (he has a 41 inch verticle leap) make him an offensive dynamo. He has large hands which give him great controll over the ball and he can pass with great court vision and knowledge of where teammates will be. Has the makings of a great player.

Some other great Players will be Eric Gordon, Mario Chalmers and NATHAN JAWAI.... its possible.

The DUDS!!! What a dud Brook Lopez slipped to number 10 in the NBA draft. Slow in all senses of the word brook lopez relied on his big body to bash around college players. He has no athletic gifts at all.... he will have New Jersey saying "what the hell were we thinking?'

The next Dud pick is Roy hibbert a 7-2 monster from Georgetown. He's going to block shots only if people thrown the ball directly into his hands. He is so slow the common turtle would give him shit about how rediculously slow he is. And he will be on the same team as Australia's own Nathan Jawai so not only is he bad and slow he will be taking precious minutes away from an Aussie..... What a dud!

The next possible dud is Joe Alexander. A white guy with black man like athleticism. He had the fastest time in the 3/4 court sprint at the Pre-draft camp he also had the second highest test result in the bench press and has a 38 inch vertical. But he's white and we all know if your white you either have to be an incredible shooter or passer. Sorry Joe your a dud!

Thanks for reading and respond if you Agree/disagree
