How do you feel about compost?

November 26th 2008 00:07
We moved house recently, and had a compost bin. Obviously we weren't going to haul the dirt to the new house so we emptied it and mulched it up.

Got me thinking though, is composting a good idea if you don't grow food in your garden? It's taking good organic material out of landfill which would mean it would be far harder for less organic material to actually decompose.

For instance, cardboard etc won't decompose in a dry bacteria free environment. Plastic bags will decompose far faster if they are buried in and surrounded by organic material....

Maybe we are doing the wrong thing by putting all this organic material in compost bins instead of putting it in with all the rest of the rubbish. Composting maybe a short term solution to landfill, causing a long term problem in landfill...

Was just reading this new magazine that has appeared over here in Aus land called Mindfood, does a pretty good job of putting up articles that aren't all fluff and crap.

Had a great article about the montreal protocol and its effect on the ozone layer, which could have been a major issue at one point but now is not.

Lots to read, i've discovered i know absolutely nothing about chlorine and how it acts in the atmosphere.

Corporations Going Green? Pt 2

September 4th 2008 01:53
It seems everyone is getting in on this whole going green thing.

Here we have another prime example of corporations cashing in on public opinion about the environment, but then again, the environment benefits despite the original motivations.

This real estate website Realty Online, promises to offset carbon emissions with their 'Green Listings' option.

It seems they've partnered with The Carbon Fund, whoever that is, and are now offsetting carbon for you if you use their site for your property needs. No amounts or anything are specified as to what when and how they will do these offsets though. Makes me a little bit wary but I guess consumer organizations would be all over them in a heartbeat if they made a claim like that and didn't back it up.

Still, the trend of eco based marketing ploys seems to be in full force ans showing no sign of letting up. I'll keep you all updated on this as I find other examples of companies cashing in on global warming fear.

Corporations Going Green? (LINK)

August 7th 2008 10:04
EVERYONE is going green, even intemet mapping site Whereis.com with a new campaign called GreenRoad and its plan is to make car trips more environmentally friendly.

It works like this: anyone planning a car journey need only register with www.thegreenroad.com.au before August 6. The website takes the trip details, estimates the amount of carbon emissions from the journey and Whereis, in partnership with GreenFleet, offsets the carbon output by planting the appropriate number of trees in native forests

Global warming - or is it? (LINK)

July 29th 2008 12:50
"If an otherwise sceptical media is doing its job on climate change, it will start with just a couple of basic questions."
Henry's favourite blogger, Janet Albrechtsen, asks two important questions.

After a dry June, July has delivered the snow goods for Australasian skiing. Which begs the question - is global warming really impacting the ski industry and what are they doing about it?

Warming and snow tend to end in tears, or at least liquid. For every one degree rise of temperature snow lines rise by 150 metres. If science is right then it doesn't bode well for we lovers of all things white and frozen. Miss Snow It All is no scientist but the CSIRO employ them. Their 2003 report predicted Australian resorts would lose half their snow by 2050 and a quarter in fifteen years
