HarperCollins signs Children’s Book of the Year
HarperCollins is delighted to announce the acquisition of one of the most talked about and anticipated books of the year, John Stephens’ The Emerald Atlas.
Heralded by the trade and media as Bologna Book Fair’s ‘book of the fair’, Nick Lake, HarperCollins UK Editorial Director, fought off competition in a hotly contested auction to sign UK and Commonwealth rights from Angharad Kowal, acting in the UK on behalf of Simon Lipskar of Writers House. In separate international deals, rights for the trilogy have already been sold to the US, Germany, Italy, France, Norway, Holland, and Brazil, with more expected to follow very shortly.
Renowned for discovering and launching some of the biggest names in children’s books today, HarperCollins will launch The Emerald Atlas in 2011, supported by a blockbuster, multi-platform marketing and PR campaign.
The Emerald Atlas is a thrilling middle-grade adventure which, in the tradition of Narnia and Harry Potter before it, feels like a future classic. In this fabulous trilogy, three orphaned children must find three magical books of unimaginable power, learn the secrets of their birthright, and defeat an evil and devastating foe. Along the way, Kate, Michael and Emma P will find unlikely allies, travel through time, master magic, encounter impossible creatures – and even, just possibly, learn what their single-lettered surname stands for.
Debut author John Stephens was an executive producer for seasons two and three of Gossip Girl. He has also been a producer and writer on The O.C. and Gilmore Girls, and has an MFA in creative writing from the University of Virginia.
Nick Lake said ‘It's so rare that a book like this comes along; one whose characters you genuinely fall in love with, and whose writing feels so instantly classic. This wonderful book caused an unprecedented rush of excitement in everyone who read it at HarperCollins. The entire children’s department loves this book, and we could not be more thrilled to have it on our list.’
