John Dyson's West Indian cupboard is bare

November 19th 2008 03:32
"If you look at the Australian system, by the time a player comes into the Australian team he has played umpteen number of matches in the Sheffield Shield cricket which is very good quality...so he is ready to play internationally. The quality of regional West Indies cricket is nowhere near the standard of the Australian structure, and is generating players that are unprepared to play against international teams. At this level it's about trying to win matches, it shouldn't be about trying to teach the players how to play international matches. Our newcomers will have to learn the basics of international cricket, other countries have strong systems and have very very strong basics, so they are doing well."

West Indies cicket coach John Dyson

Reading West Indies coach John Dyson's comments yesterday left me feeling bland. I, was neither shaken nor stirred by his new found revelation. This is something that has plagued the West Indies for years. Why is it now that he is just discovering this? Did the scales just fall from his eyes? Now that he has stated the obvious, what is his solution as coach to help alleviate what is happening? I don't think it is fair for him to come to the table, find fault and as coach offer no real and lasting solutions.

This problem he identified is something he should have known in his research before he took on the job. In fact, if he asked any West Indian fan from Cayman in the west to Barbados in the West they could have told him what the issues are facing the team.

I'm trying not to be too harsh on Dyson because the man now knows that he has been given the proverbial basket to carry water. No wonder he's feeling frustrated because the job that he's been assigned to do is basically akin to playing a miracle working doctor and breathing life into a dying patient. Dyson, like his predecessor Bennett King, is not a miracle worker and can only work with what has been given to him.

Just as he is frustrated, the average West Indians fan frustrations have turned into despair over time. We have waited over ten years for the turn around to come and the slide just keeps right on a comin'. The only thing that keeps the West Indies completely out of the cellar are Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. We as fans feel helpless to do anything as we have watched the team slide from the greatest cricketing empire in the world to the team simply known as the "Worst Indies".

John Dyson is frustrated because his job is being made harder for him by lack of quality players. Our job isn't to run the WICB or to coach the team but, it is our passion and our pride that have been slowly eaten away by the ineptitude both on the field and off. We have suffered and toiled through countless numbers of players, and the passing of the captaincy from one to the next whom all have looked all at sea in the leadership position.

If Dyson doesn't have the quality players to work with, what are his options? To work with the players that he has and take more hammerings in the press for the poor showing of the team, or make sure that his backside is covered when they continue to lose and say "I told you so" and sit and wait until his contract runs out. Either way, John Dyson has a tough road to hoe ahead of him in the next few months. I wish him all the best on the steep climb he's up against.

Poor John Dyson
went to the West Indian cupboard
to find an international player spare
but when he got there
the cupboard was bare
and the team got victories none.
