Jimmy Carter Is Right

It has been reported that of those over 65, only 35% are willing to support President Obama’s initiative to reform the health care system in the United States. Yet, those who rely heavily on the government run programs of Social Security and Medicare fear that, in trying to make Medicare more efficient, the government will divert funds to provide health care to those 45 million Americans who try to survive without it.
White senior citizens are a lost cause to the Democratic Party. During the last general election, 53% of them sided with John McCain and the Republican/Conservatives out of concern for Mr. Obama’s youth, his liberalism, his inexperience, his insistence on change, and a fear of blacks. In fact, latent racism, as much as Mr. Obama wants to believe that this country has moved away from racism and towards racial tolerance, may be the principle reason for his loss of the white elderly vote to the Republican/Conservative Party. This theory might sound strange in light of the Republican/Conservatives naming Michael Steele, a black man, as head of the party, but look at the treatment he received at the hands of the real head of the party, Rush Limbaugh. They just trot Steele out every once in a while to give the party line: “We need to protect Medicare and not cut it in the name of ‘health insurance reform.’” (U.S. News and World Report, “Obama and Democrat’s Senior Citizen Problem,” Kenneth T. Walsh, 9/11/09). Of course, they know full well how inflammatory this statement is.
Yesterday, Jimmy Carter, our not so popular, self-righteous 39th President ("I've looked on a lot of women with lust. I've committed adultery in my heart many times” with other women besides Rosalynn), said the obvious:
“I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he's African American. I live in the South, and I've seen the South come a long way, and I've seen the rest of the country that shared the South's attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African Americans. And that racism inclination still exists. . . . It's an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply.” (gawker.com, “Yes, It’s Because He’s Black, But It Doesn’t Help To Say So,” Pareene, 9/16/09)
The uproar to Carter’s remark was not truly due to his calling out of Joe Wilson as a racist, or Southerners as racists, or Americans in general as racists; it occurred because he forced all of us to look inward and admit, that yes, in spite of our denials, in spite of our outward courtesies, we are racists, both black and white, and this is hard to admit. The Black Caucus in Congress insisting on a reprimand of Joe Wilson was a racist act, as was Joe Wilson’s initial remark to the President. Even now, most morons will refuse to admit that their actions towards those of other races are governed by their own racist tendencies. Democrats are just as guilty as Republicans; liberals are just as guilty as Conservatives.
These same racist, white, conservative, elderly, Medicare receiving voters are the people who packed town hall meetings this summer to do the bidding of the Republican/Conservative Party and shout down the speakers who were trying to explain the plans that Congress was working on. President Obama has everything to gain with this voting block and nothing to lose. If he were to schedule a series of town hall meetings with this group, they wouldn’t shout him down (they were raised to respect the President), they would listen, even if they didn’t initially agree with what he had to say.
If the President did not convince even one senior citizen to change his/her mind, he lost nothing because his meetings would still be reported in the press. Any gains would be positive, and who knows, just might be the support he needs to get a health care bill before 2010, and maybe re-election in 2012.
