I'm an 80s kid, what else can i say?

About Me
First year uni student at Macquarie doing a BA and trying to get into Media Studies and particularly interested in Film/TV Editing. Am an avid fan of the Sydney music scene and the completely diluted genre known to many simply as "indie" or more specifically "indie rock."
Last.Fm
Last.fm is probably the best tool out there for finding out who listens to what, and how popular a particular artist is. For an example, check out my profile at http://www.last.fm/user/jhutchinson.

Jamiroquai bows out

February 28th 2007 23:02

Jamiroquai Jay Kay

Popular acid jazzer Jay Kay, better known as front-and-only-man of Jamiroquai, has announced his retirement from music. The decision comes shortly after his departure from label SonyBMG, and switching to Columbia Records. The split with Sony marked the end of a 14-year eight-album relationship that left Jay unhappy with his musical career, and consequently lead him to make the decision to quit music altogether, despite recently signing with Columbia.

The move to quit doesn't necessarily come at the peak of Jay's musical brilliance - which some say passed a few years ago - and, with Dynamite being the first Jamiroquai album unable to crack the top two spots in the UK Charts, the same can be said for his fame. Nevertheless, his career, beginning with his debut album Emergency on Planet Earth in 1993, saw the sale of 27 million albums.

"I haven't been happy there for a while," Jay said about his relationship with SonyBMG. "When we talked about me leaving, I jumped at the chance. I don't want to go back on the road. I don't need the money or a deal."

An eighth original LP (discluding the High Times compilation) was reportedly planned for later this year, however that seems unlikely in light of his decision. Thus far, he has made no commitment or plan to rejoin the music industry later down the track, however there is a possibility that he may return later on.

The Truth behind Audioslave breakup?

February 27th 2007 21:31

Chris Cornell

It seems that the motives behind the breakup of Audioslave may have finally been revealed. Until now, it was believed that the breakup was due to a number of factors, mainly the reconciliation between the band and De La Rocha, and Chris Cornell's desire to further pursue solo projects. However, several sources have told the New York Post that Cornell's departure is about money rather than either of the former motives.

In a recent article in the New York Post it was revealed "Chris was unhappy with the financial arrangement within the group - he wrote all the music, yet the other three bandmates took an equal share in the multimillion-dollar publishing rights." Somehow I'm not surprised. Nevertheless, the newly revealed information gives light to the idea that perhaps the formation of Audioslave wasn't so wish.

Regardless, the reformation of Rage Against the Machine continues, with the band well-and-truly reconciled with De La Rocha. The band have announced their appearance at Coachella 2007, and a slew of tour dates with the Wu Tang Clan across the coming months.

Jimbo's Absence and Affiliated Nonsense

February 19th 2007 04:16
Ok, so I've been away from the orble community for quite some time, and I regret to say that I can no longer afford my time on so many blogs at once. From here on in, I will try my hardest to keep on going with my one and original musictimes, but my others have reverted to Open Blog status. I am perfectly willing to continue managing them as blogs, however I can no longer contribute to them and as such I encourage other Orble members to join and contribute to them. MusicTimes is also an open blog in its current state, and I'll keep it that way for now, so you can also contribute to that should you wish.

on The Bleed - kingsmillrox Indie Music Video

Ok, for everyone who's paying me out for no logical reason apart from mere fanboi-ism, let me just make something straight. I"m expressing my opinion of the music, which I, as writer of www.musictimes.com.au, have a right to do. I said it in the context of a generally good comment on the side of editing so, miss jenna, you're totally wrong on that one. Author of the blog and editor of the video, yoda76, took no offense to my comment whatsoever, so I'm not sure why anyone else has to.

Grow up and get a life please.

Thank You

on Little Children – A study of suburban unease

February 19th 2007 23:55
Yeah I was a little uneasy about this film. At some points, the film seemed a little unsure of which direction it was heading in ie. satire (ala American Beauty) or tragedy (ala Madam Bovary). They didn't even begin telling one of the storylines until about halfway through, which seemed a little wierd, considering that was the focal point at the beginning. The voiceover could have worked in the same way that it worked in American Beauty, but it sounded more like film noir narration than satire/tragedy, which let down the film a little. Still, I appreciated the contrast of adulthood to childhood and how we just can't grow out of it as simply as we'd like to.

Hah, DuskDevi, whenever I see Kate Winslett these days, I think to her cameo in the Extras, and her comment about actors always winning Oscars for playing retarded characters. Perhaps it was deliberate, but at some points I don't think she brought herself out as intelligent as she should've been given her character's background, education, and the narrator's description of her personality at the beginning of the film.

I'll still be around, but probably only for Musictimes. I just can't sustain the six blogs i've been writing for recently.

Wow that was a pretty good video. Hated the music, but a decent video. I liked the relatively slow editing - these days videos are usually edited so quickly, they might as well put random shots together at a frame each and hope it resembles someone singing. Was the shaking an effect, or just mishap?

You are in good company .

As far as continuing goes, I think this news is the sign that perhaps they are finally ready to pick up where they left off, however only time will tell.

I don't necessarily agree with the backlash against that review, but over time my opinion of DiS has only worsened. Some of the writing may be quite good, but for the most part, they tend to be a little schizophrenic in their approach, eloquently trashing pretty much everyone, then giving bands ratings like 8 and 9. The comments section is just horrible such as:

"Too bloody right
I don't know what else to say apart from Mika sucks and his music sucks."

It gets a little hard to read DiS when the comments basically follow that pattern, as does some of the writing, sadly.

on January 26 - Australia Day

January 26th 2007 06:10
That's an undisputed historical fact. However, while the Dutch were the first to discover the Australian mainland, they actually landed on the Western coast, and found it unsuitable for colonisation. Since the British were the first to actually colonise Australia, they are usually considered the founders.

The same can actually be said of the American mainland. Apart from myths of Viking colonisation of Northern America, there is also some evidence of some interaction with the American mainland prior to Christopher Columbus.

Happy Australia Day!

Joe, the reason behind it is - or at least the reason the organisers fear it to be - is that the BDO has become much more than simply a "rock concert." To many its been associated with Australia Day over the year, so themes of nationalistic pride have become interwoven into it, so some Anglos use it as an excuse to enforce racial prejudice or at least some form of racial superiority.

on iPhone to have 50% profit margin

January 22nd 2007 04:19
Yeah its a shame Apple can get away with it. Still, its no doubt they make good, clean consumer electronics. Give it a year and a half, and the iPhone will be feature-packed and able to stand up to other smartphones in the market. You never know, they may even come down in price - my third-generation 30gb iPod cost a grand back in 2003.
