6,679,896,312

July 13th 2008 00:08
6,679,896,312 is the estimated world population as of today. With an estimated growth rate of 1.16%. The population grows by approximately 212,000 people everyday. These statistics aren't too terribly shocking. It is however a little overwhelming to think about.

I read an article by David Wong called "What is the Monkeysphere?" . In this article Wong discusses how a study done by the University of Liverpool suggests that humans can only really see about 150 people as real people. The rest are just the rest and although most people have compassion the 150 people in their monkeyshpere are more important in their minds than the other 6,679,896,162 people on the planet. That's only 0.0000022% of the people on the planet.

Taking this in to consideration it really doesn't seem like any one person has any real value. In the big picture this is true. To 99.9999978% of the people your death would be of little or no importance. Sure, many people may acknowledge your death, but most of them will lump you in with the statistic in which you fit.

This tends to be what makes people feel small and insignificant. But in that 0.0000022% of the population that cares about you, you matter more then 99.9999978% of the rest of the world.
