Jerry Buss, Gone but not Forgotten
February 18th 2013 20:31
Today a legend was lost and although he lived a full life, it still came too quick.
Just a few days ago (Feb. 15) Dr. Jerry Buss went to the hospital getting treatment for cancer. Now just a few days after his visit to the hospital, he’s in heaven.
Buss’ legacy began in 1979 and took the Lakers to 16 NBA Finals. Winning 10 of those finals appearance, he became the only owner with 10 titles.
The legacy and impact he had on the franchise was beyond incredible.
Players like Kobe Bryant, Shaq, James Worthy, Kurt Rambis, Magic Johnson, Byron Scott, and a myriad of other players, Buss brought in a group of hall of fame players as well as coaches (most notably Pat Riley and Phil Jackson), to make things work in LA. And for majority of his tenure, it did.
Since Buss took over in ’79, only the rival Celtics have come close to the Lakers with finals appearances at seven. The only team to come close with championships is the Chicago Bulls with six.
There will always be the Lakers and there will always be great franchises, but there will never be another Jerry Buss. Rest easy.
