The confines of my skin
Let you know where I begin and end.
And if there's doubt
just look at my fingers and toes
or my hair
because that's where I start.

If you throw words at me
like spinning discs of steel.
I can deflect the blows
I am defined and strong
Because I have not let you
confuse where you and I begin.

But if you kiss me
You are not outside me anymore
And if you speak gently
You are not outside me
Because I have lifted the latch quietly
And you have crept into the dark parlour
With dark wood floors and paintings on the wall.

So I have boarded up that door in case
And trembling, taken the paintings down
For the day when you may try
And I may give in.

Apology

February 2nd 2008 23:13
I'm sorry for the way I cut you down
I'm sorry for when I look at you and frown
I'm sorry for the times I look away
I'm sorry for the good I fail to say

Sorry for not dropping you (any) sort of line
Sorry for ignoring you all this time
I'm sorry for the coldness in my voice
Sorry I disrespect you- I know that's my choice

I'm so sorry for not smiling at you
I'm sorry for not saying 'hi' too
I'm sorry for being so mad
I know if you didn't have to hurt me you wouldn't have

Sorry for the hardness in my heart
Sorry I'm too proud to make a new start
Sorry I'm so scared to let you inside this self
I don't have any excuses to justify myself

The green room is still,
And there is a distant sound of trees brushing air.
You slide sound into the air with your humming.

We could be from a Jane Austen afternoon:
Your needle moving steadily
Through white lace-
Curled knees with
Feet softly shifting
Now and then.
Pale skin glowing
Fingers trembling with detail
Pink bolts of cotton folded around your hips.

We are in the still green room,
Fabric pulling together,
Words forming a small pile on the carpet,
Pressing cohesion into our world.

Simple

I am stuffing words with meaning-
Tearing them open,
Running my hands along the insides to hollow them out

this

Prologue:
I was lying on my bed last winter with the window wide open and I realised I was going to die. (It must have been something in the cold air that made my brain start functioning.) And I decided I didn't want to waste anymore time half-living.

Under My Skin

You buried your head in my neck
And named it as your favourite place.
I stroked your hair

Margaret's Song

January 14th 2008 09:17
Prologue:
I think this is actually a song although I don't know the tune. I wrote this after overhearing a conversation in a pool change room in Wellington, New Zealand, as one woman was talking to another about the death of a friend. I felt it was so poignant that this woman was in the midst of everyday activity when she was taken. It reminds me of my own mortality. I felt that there was also some incredible dignity in this form of death although I can't explain why: Maybe it was because she was really living up until her last seconds. So here is a poem about a woman I have never met and will never see- I have named her Margaret.

Psalm

I love him-
For a while I got tangled in his baggage,
But now I've realised that he cheers on all that is beautiful in this world
