Not exactly the head shot that JaMarcus Russell would have wanted, but as it turnes out, this is his latest one. Russell was booked just before 4:30pm, Russell was released after making bail. Bail was set at $2,500 dollars.
The 24-year-old former LSU star and the No. 1 draft choice in 2007 was arrested as part of an undercover narcotics investigation, said Mobile County Sheriff's spokeswoman Lori Myles. She would not say what led to his arrest. She said he did not have a prescription for the codeine.
Myles told reporters that several people were in Russell's home at the time of his arrest but Russell was the only person taken into custody.
Mobile County Sheriff's Office Spokesperson, stated he was arrested for codeine syrup. A July 20 court date is pending.
So you ask " What's that?" Well some poeple may know it better as "purple drank". It is a banned substance in the NFL, and most people will use the substance as a recreational drug in an effort to get "high". Typically people will mix it with a beverage such as sprite, and this is called "sip-sip", and it is a felony to have it with out a perscription.
Russell grew up in Mobile, Alabama playing high school football and Quarterback for LSU.
He was the overall #1 draft pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2007. Recently parting ways with the Raiders, Russell has heard talk of interest from the New York Jets behind starter Quarterback Mark Sanchez.
Steve Smith injured during flag football game
Carolina Panther's Wideout Steve Smith broke his left forearm Sunday playing football... that's Flag Football. The four-time pro-bowler, who has a reputation around the league as a "tough-guy", will miss the rest of training camp, but should be ready for the season opener when they go to the New York Giants.
Just as Kelen Winslow, Ben Roethlisberger (fill in whoever you like), Steve Smith is another case of a player risking himself by doing something that could jeopardize their future, and in some cases, the fate of the team.
This is not a case where Smith will miss any games, however, this is a time when his team really needs him. They have a Quarterback that needs to get his timing down with basically their only reciever, since Muhsin Muhammad retired after not being resigned. This is a team that is, and probably will continue to struggle, so it was important that he be there to work with Matt Moore, and he is an important voice in the locker room.
According to Smith's agent, Derrick Fox, he said "They were messing around, the ball went over his head and he slipped he put his arm out to brace himself. When he did he felt a sharp pain. He went in [Sunday] afternoon to have an X-ray and it showed a break."
Smith had surgery Sunday night to have a small plate and screws inserted in his arm. Fox said while it's the same arm he broke at the end of last season, it's in a different spot and not his wrist. Smith suffered no nerve damage, is expected to make a full recovery and could return as soon as midway through the preseason.
"I'm not trying to play doctor, but I don't think he'll miss any games due to this injury," Fox told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
Smith annually hosts a youth football camp in Charlotte which began Thursday, the day after the Panthers concluded voluntary spring workouts. Fox initially said Smith was injured playing with children at his camp, but later said he was unsure if he was playing with children or adults.
Standard NFL contracts bar playing football outside of team settings, but Fox said he didn't believe the Panthers would take action since he should be healed for the regular season.
Former Cowboy's Safety goes to Ravens
Former Cowboy's Safety Ken Hamlin has confirmed that he signed a one-year contract to play behind current S Ed Reed.
The 6-2, 209lbs. Hamlin, who turned 29 January 20th, would provide some insurance for Ed Reed, who is recovering from offseason hip surgery.
We haven't really heard much about the recovery status on Reed, but it does appear he will not be avalible at the beginning of training camp at least. It does make you wonder however just how much the Ravens are worried about his recovery time.
Reed is a six-time pro-bowl selection, and the most feared ball-hawking DB who isn't named Troy Polamalu. So for the Raven's to go out and get Hamlin (who is a pro-bowler himself), it would seem that the Ravens felt they needed to make a move.
Hamlin earned his pro-bowl berth in 2007 playing for the Cowboy's, after playing his first four seasons in Seattle. A pretty effective player in his first two seasons with Dallas, but last season he caught a bit of the injury bug, missing four games due to a high-ankle sprain. He had just 52 tackles, and no interceptions.
Hamlin was cut by the Cowboy's back in April. There has yet to be a formal announcement, but Hamlin said he is "ready to get going, and help his team win"
Albert Haynesworth has requested a trade, this coming from the Associated Press this morning. Haynesworth was M.I.A. during mandatory mini-camp today saying that he didn't want to switch to the 3-4 defense that the Redskins are going to since Mike Shanahan's arrival this off-season.
There has not been a positive response from the locker room for just about all Redskins players, calling Haynesworth "selfish", and "turning his back on the team". Shanahan even revealed that they gave Haynesworth an option back in February that if he didn't want to play that defense that they would trade him to a different team in exchange for not paying him the 21 millon dollar bonus that was due to him on April 1st. I guess the April fools trick was on the Redskins as Hayesworth took the money and ran
