Not Enough Sex & the City

June 23rd 2008 06:00
The first and last thing I remember about the Sex & the City movie is how haggard Sarah Jessica Parker & Kim Cattrall look. Sometimes no amount of Hollywood makeup can cover that up.

To be fair though, both these women appear in a lot of scenes with younger people. Take Kim Cattrall for example next to the younger Jason Lewis, who by no means is a spring chicken himself she really looks her age. And as for SJP her wrinkles are bad bad bad, I can now see why some people say she is one of the most ugly people on TV.

Other than that the movie can be summed up as a pretentious, tedious, condescending look at the lives of four ridiculously rich ageing women some of who drink a lot & have very peculiar tastes in clothes. And every now and again between the boring self centred dialogue a hardcore sex scene is thrown in.

But to be honest it still didn't feel like there was enough sex in the city to warrant using such a title, just predictable situations with corny corny conclusions. And one hot naked guy who graces the majority of those sex scenes previously mentioned.

However, there were some funny parts, the only part I can remember now though is when Kristin Davis's character Charlotte poops her pants. I do remember laughing at other parts but the movie is long and painful in some places you feel almost drained after watching it.

I don't understand who the target audience is suppose to be for this movie. If if the producers/writers were aiming for anybody above the age of sixteen, they are just plain insulting peoples intelligence. I actually felt my IQ lowering whilst watching parts of this movie.

Now I do understand fashion is suppose to be a major feature of this movie but most of the outfits were utterly ridiculous. Carrie's wardrobe would have to of been the most bizarre, and I am all for the weird and wonderful but this was not weird in a good way or wonderful, it was just a mess.

At one point Carrie is in a cream puff of a wedding dress with a bird attached to her head. I must point out that the girls do make light of this in another scene but it had no business there in the first place. A bird...I mean really.

All in all I think someone owes me the last couple of hours of my life back, this was definitely not my cup of tea or cosmo for that matter.

Kung-Fu Panda

June 18th 2008 12:47
Arguably one of the best animated movies ever. I am not a kung-fu fan and to be honest I have been really getting over the barrage of animated movies the studios have been flooding us with over the past five years (think Bee Movie, Open Season, Happily Never After, Shrek the III and Shrek XVII - the Ogre Funeral oh whoops that hasn't come out yet). But my faith in the animated genre has been restored by a smart mouthed, quick witted panda who dreams of being a kung fu master.

This movie is genuinely funny - for adults, some of the jokes I don't think kids would even get but it all works. The casting for this movie is absolutely perfect, Jack Black is fab as Po the Panda, you can see his facial expressions through Po and he really takes this Panda to a whole new level. I honestly think this movie would be half as entertaining & funny if Jack Black was not in it. Dustin Hoffman is just so good as Shifu ( I am still trying to work out what kind of animal he is suppose to be?!) the master of the legendary Furious Five. The furious five themselves are also well cast, you can tell Seth Rogan's distinct voice as the praying mantis (the acupuncture scene is a highlight) and Angelina Jolie turns the Tigress into a sassy, strong warrior.

Now, when you watch a king fu movie animated or otherwise you have got to expect some kung fu. Going to watch this I thought the fighting scenes would be really lame, but they're AWESOME. Some of the best bits in the movie are the fighting scenes and also when Shifu is training Po. But my all time favorite part is when Tai Lung, the films villain breaks free from the prison he has been held in for years. The animation is brilliant and the character is magnificent - voiced by Ian McShane . The animation during the fight scenes is phenomenal too, with tricks like slow motion during fast action scenes making it a visual feast leaving you wanting more and more fights! ( it looks a lot more impressive than it sounds)

Another thing I love about this film is that although the central message is a bit soppy -you know "All you have to do is believe in yourself blah blah blah that old thing" - they still manage to have a decent ending without it going all Disney and fairy tale like. In other words it is funny all the way to the end. If I gave ratings this movie would get a 10/10 for sure!

Horton hears a Who

June 4th 2008 12:42
Here is a story about an elephant who becomes obsessed with a speck, he believes a tiny person lives on the speck but everybody around him thinks he is crazy. Now here is another story about a Mayor of a town where nothing bad happens who lives on a speck. Put the two stories together and you get Horton hears a Who.
>
> The concept of this children's tale is so intriguing it kind of makes it OK to watch it even though your in your late twenties, early thirties... doesn't matter. It asks that age old question of "Is there something bigger out there?" and in the people of Whoville's case there is. One has to wonder what was going through Dr Seuss' mind most of the time, but whatever it was he has given audiences hours of pleasure thanks to his brand of madness, and Horton hears a Who is no exception.
>
> Jim Carrey voices Horton the elephant. At first I was a little sceptical after seeing Mike Myers do such a good job with the Cat in the Hat I was almost disappointed when I heard Jim Carrey was in the movie. Jim Carrey can get annoying with his constant facial spasms and phoney accents, so its a nice change to watch him without actually seeing him. In saying that though he is perfect for the role of the over zealous Horton intent on protecting the universe on the speck, he is just crazy and zany enough to compliment Dr Seuss's crazy and zany story. In the end I don't think Mike Myers could have done it better.
>
> My personal favourite though is definitely Steve Carrel as the Mayor of Whoville, the more I see or hear of him the bigger fan I am becoming (I cant wait to see him as Maxwell Smart). One of my favourite scenes in the movie is when Horton and the Mayor first make contact and Horton reveals that Whoville is a speck on a flower in his hands, they both then realise the magnitude of what is happening - the future of Whoville lies in the palm of Horton's hands.

Meet The Spartans

February 24th 2008 06:33
I know movies of this genre are suppose to be stupid, but I thought it was suppose to be stupid in a funny way not stupid in an utterly lame way. But that's exactly what Meet the Spartans is...funny in a very very lame way, not the good lame like the Evil Dead movies but just lame lame lame.

I am big fan of the Scary Movie movies and I also thought Not Another Teen Movie, Epic Movie, The Naked Gun movies, Hot Shots and Top Secret were all funny "spoof" type movies, so when I saw the previews for Meet the Spartans I was excited. I started to watch it and the begin was promising, I was laughing here and there ( maybe my giggles were in anticipation of something really funny happening, and I was preparing myself for the big laugh that saw tears streaming down my little face....). But as the movie drew on the jokes became almost detached from the plot and some of them honestly were not even funny, not even funny enough to raise a half smile or one of those noises you make when you know something is trying to be funny but you really just don't think it is like "ha-uum

Shawn of the Fuzz

February 13th 2008 00:07
Dennis, a fat man without a clue, ditches his pregnant girlfriend at the alter only to realise he made a mistake 5 years on. In order to win her affections back he must complete a marathon thus winning her heart and stealing her attention away from a new suitor.

This is the basic plot outline for Run Fatboy Run, the new Simon Pegg flick. So while I wait in anticipation for it to hit Australian shores I thought I would take a moment to comment and praise his other fine works Hot Fuzz and Shawn of the Dead

When I think of musicals the words lame and painful to watch spring to mind. I haven't seen Hairspray or any of the High School Musical movies, the last musical I watched would have probably been Grease 2 when I was in primary school (Yes, I did climb up a ladder and belt out "Cool Rider" just like Stephanie, what little girl didn't...). However, you don't really associate the words blood, gore and violence with musicals...well I didn't.

Until last night when I watched Sweeney Todd, and I must say I was impressed to say the least. Yes, the singing did drive me and my partner a bit zany at first, but once all the blood started to flow I hardly noticed any singing at all

Walk Hard The Dewey Cox Story

January 20th 2008 01:47
Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story is hands down the funniest movie I have seen this year (the whole twenty days of it). I saw the title a couple of times and always glanced over it and moved on, there was nothing really appealing about it. What changed my mind was seeing part of a preview on TV, and in retrospect I have no idea what it was about the preview that changed my mind because on seeing them now I see that the parts they show in the preview are nowhere near as funny as the film. In fact the parts they show in the previews aren't really funny at all, I guess the powers that be decide that if we show this bit that is not really funny but people like it then they will think the rest of the movie is pure comedy gold...but anyway I digress.

John C Reilly plays Dewey Cox a simple boy from a simple family, until a horribly (funny) bloody accident involving a machete changes his life forever. Dewey grows into a huge success much to the disbelief of his father and wife, and begins to walk the hard road of rock stars cliches

Shoot Em Up

December 27th 2007 00:15
Shoot Em Up....well the title says it all really. This movie was a non-stop action packed shooting spree in almost any conceivable situation. It was fun, funny and so unbelievably corny it was good.

All the mayhem starts when the main character "Mr Smith" is innocently sitting at a bus stop eating a carrot - more about the carrot later - when a pregnant women scurries past quickly followed by an armed assailant trying to put her down for the big sleep. But the killers plans are foiled when Mr Smith decides he wont stand for this and gets himself in on the action. Basically from here on in Mr Smith doesn't stop shooting...its great

I am Legend

December 21st 2007 02:44
Often before I watch a movie I already have a preconception on whether I will like it or not, but more often than not I am surprised by how many movies I think I wont enjoy that I actually do.

I am Legend is a perfect example of this. From the previews I got the impression it would be a movie about Will Smith surviving in an empty world and then finding out he was not alone and being stalked by crazy zombie type creatures. To a certain extent I was right, but the movie offers a lot more explanation and depth than that

Death Proof

November 11th 2007 02:50
I have seen some crappy movies in my time but nothing could have prepared me for Quentin Taratino's latest piece of self indulgence masqueraded as a film.

I am talking about Death Proof. Living in Australia we missed out on the whole Grindhouse experience and are seeing Death Proof and Planet Terror released as two separate movies. At first I thought this was an outrage and as Australians we are missing out, but I know understand why this is. After seeing both movies Death Proof is definitely a flop
