Big Mouth!
I am part of what people would call the Religious Right. I am morally conservative and lean towards the republican party. However, I find myself being every bit as embarrassed by my fellow conservatives that are not part of the "Religious Right" as they seem to be of me.
I can understand completely why the more liberal public seems to think of conservatives as hatemongers. After all, if you don't agree with certain conservative talk show hosts, then you are just plain stupid. If these talk show hosts would quit acting like serious jerks and have civil conversations with people who disagree with their position, they might be able to sway them over to their point of view.. Instead, some on the right seem to treat the left like they are idiots simply because they have feelings that, heaven forbid, impact their thinking and, they end up making the liberals mad instead of convincing them of the truth. There are numerous conservative talk show hosts who may be right in their stance but they behave so badly that no one is willing to listen to them for long enough to get their points.
Then, you have the extremest wacko's that bomb abortion clinics, kill gay people, and blow up federal buildings just to make a statement. I must confess that it is not usually "tree huggers" that are doing things like this. No, they are usually the ones having the abortions and "making out" in inappropriate places, like in front of my children. But, I am not here to talk about what is wrong with the left, at least not today.
At any rate, I feel that if the Right would like to appeal to the more liberal part of society then they might want to try to use a little honey and drop all of the salt and vinegar. Try using some compassion, understanding and *gasp* feeling to help the left understand what Thomas Jefferson stated so long ago that "A government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough to take away everything you have".
My name is Jan Archer and I am a Christian Conservative. I wasn't always a Christian nor was I always a conservative. As a matter of fact, I was once pretty much a bleeding heart liberal. I was all about partying and having fun. I drank like a fish and smoked like a fire. So, what made me change? His Son and my son.
My husband and I had been married 8 years. We were riding home from a long trip and we started discussing children. We had been too busy partying to discuss it before but we weren't getting any younger and decided that if we were going to have any we better get started. I didn't want an only child and neither did my husband so we decided that we would have two, one a couple of years after the first. We didn't have any trouble getting pregnant and almost right away I began "the change" I was sitting on the couch smoking, yes while I was pregnant, and I saw an evangelist on TV talking about how she used to smoke and give Bible Studies in her home. I thought "Hmmm, if she could quit with God's help, maybe I could too" and I got down on my knees, prayed for Jesus to enter my heart, change my life, and help me quit smoking. Within a couple of days I got so sick I couldn't breathe much less smoke and I put them down, never to pick them up again. I know this was God and the reason I know is because I had tried 7 times before and couldn't do it. This time, it was almost easy and it was permanent. At any rate, having a child totally made me change my perspective. I wasn't the only person in the world. I knew that children learn from example and I was not any one I wanted my children to follow. Did I want them growing up in a world full of drugs or getting hooked on drugs? No, so I quit partying and became anti-drug. Did I want them partying with "girls gone wild"? No, so I became tame. Everything that I saw in my life that I didn't want them to emulate, I chunked out the proverbial window. Do I still love animals and nature. YES! Do I still have feelings that sometimes impact my reasoning? Yes! Do I care about the homeless and the old and the sick. Of course, I do. I just believe in taking care of them a different way than most people from either side of the political fence! I titled this blog Isaiah 5:20 "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter". My kids have to live in this world. I want to make sure that they know the TRUTH...His Truth about what is good and evil, light and dark, sweet and bitter. In the end, His Truth will be the only Truth that counts.
