Let the stealing begin!

July 30th 2007 23:58
I saw an ad on television the other day where you can get a kit delivered to you in the mail and you send all of your old jewellery to these nice people and in return they send you a nice cheque for what was sent. Is it just me or doesn't anyone else feel that it may leave the door open for someone to make a quick few hundred dollars from your jewellery? Who can tell who's ring/bracelet/watch/earrings they are or if they're stolen or not? Do these people on the other end care whose stuff they receive? I can see the thieves and the other crims rubbing their hands as a door to legitimize their illegality has just opened up.

There has been a great push recently to stop advertising to children in regards to junk food. I'm not in the advertising business but it would seem that kids are a target market for a whole lot of things - toys, games and food (especially junk), movies (and everything that's tied into it which is usually junk food, games and toys). Why does anyone care why advertisers think of kids as a target market? Do they have money to spend? Where is your six year old's disposable income? It doesn't exist! Simply because they are too young to earn so the best that they can do is to pester their parents for something. The parents who fall into the trap of buying their kids everything, or for that matter if their child is FAT is not the fault of the advertisers. The parents need to take the responsibility of the mess that has been created here. If parents stood firm and learned to say "no" to their kids then things might be different.

If a child wants something and can't get it, then thats too bad, but children need to understand that they aren't going to get everything they want. Thats how they end up fat and spoilt. Thats how they also end up being bad sports because some of them don't know how to lose because they are taught that winning and losing are bad things to teach kids. How can someone truly sit down and justify that taking scorelines out of a game is a good thing? It teaches that in life (just as in sports) either you win or you lose. It's a lot harder to face losing when you're not used to it. When you can lose and lose with pride then you have maturity but to teach kids not to lose or to win is trying to shield them from the truth. Life hurts sometimes. Suck it up and deal with it.

Sports (especially competitive sports) are about winning and losing. So is life. A teacher told me that a parent called her and complained that her daughter is distraught because she wasn't chosen as a Prefect despite the fact that the girl had a dirty rotten stinking attitude (my words not the teachers) to her studies and to teachers. Why do we wrap our kids in cotton wool and then expect them to be world beaters when they will have little or no value to society because they won't know what the real world is like? If there is no losing in junior sports, no failure in exams and the kid can sit down and eat junk food and play his latest video game all day then what have we created as the next generation? Is that what we really want our kids to learn from us? Losing and failing are so diabolical? There is a lesson in everything we do. Losing and failing are what makes up our lives. So we lose a game or we fail and exam? You know what we do? We train and study harder so next time we are better prepared to reach new heights.

The problem is not the kids. It's the soft adults in a position of power (either a "child psychologist" or a parent who seem to think that kids need to be protected from every little thing that happens in life. I expect to see soon all kids drugged up on ADD/ADHD medication walking around in bicycle helmets, armguards and knee protectors to keep them physically safe. It's ironic that parents want to keep kids physically safe but load them up with junk food so they become grossly obese and then turn around and blame advertisers! How sad how relentlessly sad.

Anyone who has read any of my blogs (which may have reached at least 5 by now) would realize I'm a straight up and down guy who doesn't really take to pop culture or the use of politically correct language. I find it ridiculous that people have become so sensitive to the fact of who they are.

One time it was okay to be who and what you are. Now that we're in an age of political correctness it is no longer okay to be seen as fat, bald, short, old, or anything that may seem to downgrade or denigrate you personally or your profession. I guess I can understand that a "financial controller" may be a head accountant but calling a garbage collector a sanitation engineer or a gas station attendant a petroleum transfer technician is pushing it.

Now I bring all of that up because I saw an advertisement in the paper for a "sandwich artist". A sandwich artist!!? What is that? Have we become so sensitive to people that butter two slices of bread, slap on meat, tomatoes and lettuce that they now prefer to be known as "sandwich artists"? Where is the art in making a sandwich exactly? I have to be honest I used to be sceptical regarding baristas (you know the people who make coffee) but apparently they even have their own world championships so I have to give credit where credit is due.

I'll wait with baited breath for the sandwich artist world championships. I'd love to see how seductive someone can make a lettuce and cheese sandwich.

Do as I say and not as I do

Have you ever seen some good advertisements that just appeal to you because they're charming or quirky in some way but when you think about it seriously it is downright dangerous? It brings to mind the Febreze ads where the people just can't stop smelling the product because it smells so nice. My wife was taken in by the ad and bought a can. I couldn't help read the label and would you believe that on the can are the words "do not inhale"?

Hmmm....so if we are not supposed to inhale the contents, why does the ad show people continually inhaling? It seems to me that Febreze hasome kind of explaining to do. We are often told not to do what is in the ad as it may be dangerous. Do you see any warning on the ad that says "Do not try this at home! Professional sniffers!" No neither did I. I hope someone tries it at home just to test the legal system

We are just begging for trouble when studies like the one that came out yesterday telling us we can catch obesity from our friends and family. It is a very dangerous thing when you leave open the door for frivolous lawsuits. Of all of these so called serious studies to have been done this has to be in my humble don't know very much opinion the most ridiculous study done yet.

In my experience I have known and hung with some extremely fat people (yes FAT!!! F-A-T. If you're looking for political correctness you've reached the wrong place.) and me being the build I am have never gained one single ounce of weight! My mother wasn't exactly what you would call petite and my father my brother or myself didn't gain a pound! I have a brother who lives across the world and his mother and step father are two heavyset people yet he's not even close to being more than someone who's still slim trim and all round good guy. So where does this come from and where does it lead? I'll tell you...follow me here

I don't understand why...

We have this thing where we don't trust lawyers but when we vote for them to represent us in either parliament/senate/congress we expect them to be honest?

people enjoyed watching Friends

The other day I was home flicking through the channels on the cable system we have at home when I came across one of my old time favourites...The Golden Girls. I really enjoyed the show at the time. There is a saying in my home country that everything old is new again. Well not quite new because this gem of an updated version of the Golden Girls shouldn't really go into production for at least another 40 years at least.

Here's my concept. We get Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie as 60 something vibrant sexy ladies who are still trying to get their careers back on track. Now to make it a little more interesting Nicole's dad Lionel could be living with them and as he would be advanced in age he would be maybe a little hard of hearing, maybe a senile. What fun! We could also bring back the catchphrase which has been sorely lacking in recent sitcoms. Could you imagine old Lionel standing behind a door after someone has knocked or answering a phone by going "Hello? Hello? Who is it? Is it me you're looking for?" Oh the laughter

I bought a phone card recently whilst travelling abroad. Imagine my surprise when I dial the access number and I hear a female voice on the other end say "Enter your pin code" No hello welcome to (insert name of company here) just "Enter your pin code". Its something that makes me wary of even dialling the number at all. But one good thing came out of it. I came up with another of my ideas thats sure to please.

What if a company had a recorded female voice that changes over the month and is at its worst when she's apparently close to or on her period. Some days it'd be with a smile "Hello welcome to (insert company name here). Please listen carefully to our options." Closer to the end of the month we'd hear the messages get snippier and snippier "you'd better listen good because I'm only saying it once!" Now if we're not quick enough to enter the pin or press the correct button you know how thats going to go. "That is so typical! You really don't listen do you? I don't know why the @#%& I bother sometimes!" Whilst we're there trying to figure out which is the correct button to press or we're fumbling for the pin code somewhere close by we'd hear "For God's sake would you hurry up
