Fighting a losing battle

April 25th 2007 04:36
"I believe myself that the secretary of state, the secretary of defense — and you have to make your own decision as to what the president knows — that this war is lost, and that the surge is not accomplishing anything, as indicated by the extreme violence in Iraq yesterday." US Senator Harry Reid

Over the past week the US Republican party has pounced on those statements as being anti-American and unpatriotic. What is unfortunate is that he may have more of a point than what they would want to have any of us believe. When a foreign army has to resort to building a wall around a section of the city to stop the insurgents creating more havoc speaks volumes about the efforts of the multi-national forces to try and keep peace in a country that has quickly become mired in what could be an escalation of a civil war.

It no longer matters why the US convinced the rest of the world to go into Iraq. Whether it was the threat of WMD's or how evil Saddam was. The fact is we are there now in a situation that involves more than just trying to create peace in Iraq. The multi-national forces are not just up against a rag tag bunch of militants who want them out of there for their own means and ends but are fighting an ideology that is being planted in young minds far away from the battlefields. This is a new kind of war for which the US was totally unprepared for. If the "enemy" had fought together as a traditional army as opposed to individual attacks then the US and the rest of the forces would have claimed victory, packed up their stuff years ago and the world would be holding hands and singing "Kumbya" in unison.

The US has put the rest of the world in such a position that they have opened up the Middle East to radical Muslims who see this as a new place to set up base and control the region. Once you control the region you control the oil. Once they control the wealth then anything is possible. If the US pulls out tomorrow then they leave the world on the brink of disaster.

The theatre of war in Iraq is the visible part. Nobody seems to be talking about the silent war that is just as dangerous and will not be felt possibly for many years to come. It is happening all over the world and yet nobodys saying a word. It will be of immense danger to the west, more dangerous than the present war in Iraq if the world continues to live in ignorant bliss.

If you cast your eyes to Africa and in particular Sudan, Somalia, Morocco and Nigeria you will see that the radicals have their foot planted firmly in those countries and have either taken power or are fighting for it, and in some former secularist or Christian countries in the Middle East they have already fallen into hardline Islamic hands. If it can happen in those places, why is it impossible to believe that it won't happen here in the west?

In Europe and the US it's a little different as the moderate Muslims have slid in and demanded their rights to live the way they want including taking away the rights of the other religions to live the way they have for centuries (does anybody remember Christmas before it was hijacked and packaged as just another festive season?). This is like whilst the father stands out the front keeping out his daughters boyfriend whilst her other friends are sneaking in the back.

I don't mean to sound alarmist nor do I mean to come across as anti-Islamic (just anti radical muslim) but there is a danger that eventually the western world will wake up to a world that is no longer our own.

Hamming it up with a hate crime

April 24th 2007 13:23
I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't read it for myself. I was watching a news show which mentioned it as a "ham sandwich" hate crime. I didn't actually see the story so I did what any rational person would do. I googled it. And there it was. Students in a middle or junior high school in the US (where else?) apparently threw a paper bag with a ham sandwich onto a table where Somali Muslims were eating. It was reported that one of the boys looked into the bag and pulled out the sandwich. Of course the Muslims were so highly offended that the school officials are bending over backwards to appease them.

I mean no offense to Muslims and their beliefs but simply being near pork/ham/bacon is that enough to cause this much outrage? The real problem with this, is that now people now have to be so very careful about what they eat and where they eat it. Since it is now considered offensive to have pork near Muslims whats next? Perhaps eating ice cream near an obese person will be a hate crime too? How about eating any meat in front of a vegetarian? Or simply keeping your food down near a bulimic? Do you see where I'm going with this. This sets a very dangerous precedent not just in a religious sense but also a wider more general meaning as well.

So my dear well meaning reader just be careful about what you eat in public. Next time you may just be offending someone somewhere near you and you may end up paying more than for just your meal.

I couldn't help but read on msn not so long ago there is now this trend for men to use concealer, oil absorbing face powder and brow gel. I can't help but think back on when I was growing up and it was strange to see a guy wearing one earring. These days it's not uncommon to see a man walking around not only wearing an earring in each ear, but you can still smell the lotion on his soft hands. Next time look closer he may be wearing concealer as well. I think I'll just keep out of this whole "makeup" confusion because I believe that men need to be men and not blurring and confusing the lines of masculinity and femininity.

Coffee with your shower anyone?

April 23rd 2007 10:01
Today just to show the giant steps that humans have made in technology some bright sparks in England have made a soap out of coffee to give you that buzz earlier! Of course it will have to come with that ubiquitious warning sign. DO NOT EAT!!!! Because I'm waiting for that poor schmuck who will want to sue because they thought that the perfect way to get rid of the tiny bit of soap was to boil and drink it with their mid morning biscuits. With the trouble the world is in today with diseases rampant the best we can come up with coffee soap and the fools who'll end up drinking the remnants of whats left of it. Poor us.

When the West Indies were Kings

April 23rd 2007 09:10
In one of the Caribbean papers today there was an announcement that unexpected but not a total surprise. Bennett King had resigned as coach of the West Indian cricket team. It follows on the heels of the retirement of Brian Lara. In years gone by there was never any need to have a coach, let alone a foreign coach. Of course now that Bennett King has gone he and Australian his support staff will probably go too leaving the West Indies board right back where it was before...back at square one. Having Bennett King as coach was only ever symptomatic of the West Indian plight and speaks of the desperation of finding a quick fix band aid solution to an attitude bypass operation.

The greatest tragedy of world cricket isn't the fall of Zimbabwe or the various betting scandals but the decline of a team that once could draw the crowds in their thousands to match and better the rest of the world teams. Where once there was fear of a West Indian bowler because of his pace and his accuracy now there is none because he lacks the intelligence to out think even batting bunnies, or bowlers being taken to the sword by swashbuckling West Indians now there is just impatient poor shot selection

In recent times there has been a lot of talk regarding Alec Baldwins message he left for his 11 year old daughter on her phone. Some people were mortified that he should even think such things let alone say them. A minority of people have jumped to defend him which is sad in the least. He has well and truly been screwed over and his well known temper been exploited by not only the press but his own child through ex-wife.

I don't believe for a minute that Mr Baldwin is an angel far from it but he has been outplayed by people who were quite happy to see him fall flat on his face. Neither do I condone his insults to his daughter ("rude little pig" etc) but listening to his phone message it was coming from someone who had been putting up with quite a lot. It wasn't the first time that this had happened and he was getting tired of putting in and not getting anything back. It's not like a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship where he could break off and walk away permanently. This is his child where he has to either put up with her behaviour or he puts an end to her errant ways. He very wisely decided to try and put an end to it
