Jamoz's corner - by jamoz

Jamoz's corner - October 2006

I have to ask : What is a married policeman doing prowling around a shopping centre looking for young boys to expose themselves to him for? It seems so very unfortunately ironic that a person who is an authority figure (albeit he didn't use it but claimed to be a 17 year old) knows the law but doesn't have the faintest idea regarding morals and decency. He has risked not only his own life but, of those around him as well. Has he learned nothing of the convicted paedophile whose house was burned down last week? This sicko who has denied everything was sentenced today in court and I want to wish him all the best in his four months of prison. May he be exposed on the inside to all of the genitals that he was so intent on seeing on the outside.

There seems to be a lot of talk about young people and sexuality these last few days. Watching the news throughout the day today, there seemed to be a focus on keeping young people protected from the harmful exposure by being dressed too provocatively in advertisements for department stores. Well, well well haven't our chickens come home to roost? Children have been bombarded with all kinds of sexualized images for the last few years from the media and since it has now become fashionable, department stores want to sell provocative clothing to their target market, so what do they do? Find kids to model them. Of course the kids have to promote the clothes the way they're intended and so now we end up in this situation.
Where are the parents in all of this? I have to lay at least some of the blame at the parents feet, and you know why? The parents are the ones who left the children in front of the television so that it became the teacher and guardian of morals. Not only that parents were there, and continue to be there buying these types of clothes for their children to parade around in, and not only that, I would at least think that the parents of these models would have a say, or at least authorise what their children wear on a shoot. If parents were that unhappy about exposing their children in that manner then they should by all means have pulled them off the shoot and take them out of modelling altogether. Did you see or hear about that happening?

Why leave this topic for psychologists and child welfare experts to slug out? Parents you have a moral obligation to make sure your children are being protected at all times, yet you stand idly by and let outsiders do what they want with your child. I don't think this debate would have ever come up if certain parents had done their jobs in the first place.
I have to admit though looking at some of the pictures I couldn't see anything wrong with them, because they were ordinary children in ordinary clothes, and I began to think to myself if these pictures disturbed some people so much I'm sure that there are some recently emanicipated Afghan women who have given up their veils and would be happy to be rid of them for our girls sake, and I'm sure there may be some child protection agent somewhere ready to jump on a plane and collect them for the childrens sake. How noble. Protection at any cost. It sounds like to me there are now shadows in every corner and monsters under every bed and in every closet as far as our children are concerned. I say be vigilant but not at the cost of destroying freedoms. Bring back strong and decisive parenting where it's most important in morals, values and attitudes with parents leading by example.

Whats in a name?

October 10th 2006 07:24
There is something that is really starting to tick me off and that is parents who decide to give their children these terribly awful pretentious first names. The worst offenders surprise surprise comes from celebrities. Coco, Pilot Inspektor (yes it’s spelt with a “k” to really aggravate me a little more), Milo, Apple, Fifi Trixibelle, Peaches Honeyblossom, Hiraani Tigerlily and all five of George Foreman’s boys are actually called George, but an apparently ordinary sports mad couple in the US have out celebritied the celebrities and taken it to another level by calling their child (I kid you not) ESPN. God I hope those are his initials because that kid is gonna get some hell when he grows, if they aren’t, that’s okay because the karma of parenthood dictates that what was laid on him he will give back to his parents in due time.
Why isn’t there a law to protect children from this kind of embarrassment? We create laws for the protection of children from all kinds of abuse but we don’t have one for the naming of children. Oh, I’m going to hear it now from those of you who’d claim that it’d be an infringement human liberties and on privacy. Why should you have the right to get to name your child something extravagantly embarrassing? Do you think your child will honestly thank you for calling them “Apple” or “Pilot Inspektor”? Would you like to be lumped with a name along those lines? Just as the formation of a new company needs a name, a newborns name should need to pass through a system to make sure that the names workable and if it’s not…then that’s just tough! Pick another name and make sure it’s something practical and sensible if you don’t mind. Why not bring in the parents and interview them to make sure they’re not high on some kind of drug or don’t have the IQ of a solitary potato? It irritates me that parents call their children after their heroes whether they are sports or musical or whatever and it also strikes me as egotistical that parents will give the child their name and claim tradition. “Oh, my name is Charles Robin Huntinghurst the XIV. The name has been in our family for generations.”
What is wrong with these parents? There are so many other normal names out there and they choose to call new individuals after themselves? It lacks originality and reeks of laziness. “Gee, I can’t be bothered to find a name for our newborn son. Let me just take the easy way out and call him after me!” Let’s just hope your child brings more imagination into this world buddy because even Homer Simpson didn’t name his son after himself, and if Homer has more imagination than you…

Idol tv

October 10th 2006 02:16
Last night showed what I had suspected for a very long time. We have lost our taste in music. I feel bad for the fact that someone every week has to go on Idol, especially when they have real talent. Last night a travesty was done. Lavina should not have been the one to go. In fact, she and Chris should never have been standing there in the first place. If anyone should have gone it should have been Lisa. In my opinion, Lisa should have gone from about two or three weeks ago. Is it only from Sunday that Mark picked up that Lisa doesn't have great vocal range? Her monotone absolutely drives me crazy every single week. It was awful when she sang "The Joker" last week and she completely ruined "Heart of Glass" and I am going to stop supporting this show as I cannot see how we as voters have made the right choice. To me it's like sending the innocent man to the gallows whilst the guilty go free. I am embarrassed by the choices made and people need to start listening more to the judges and forget the partisan votes. Otherwise we'll just end up with another useless celebrity who'll just drive the celeb reality tv shows.

my reality tv

October 10th 2006 01:35
In recent times I have noticed that there has been an incremental increase in crap reality television and for the life of me I cannot figure out why. Where are the network executives who are supposed to be on the lookout for quality programming? Most probably sleeping in front of a tv somewhere that's showing garbage.
I just wish that they'd go back to making local stuff like crappy Aussie sitcoms (along the lines of Hey Dad! excepting this time they'd actually make it funny or the one with Jon English who played an aging hippie) or sturdy family dramas like Rafferty's Rules or Blue Heelers (this time without John Wood) without stealing unworthy US ideas and transplanting them here. We've really lost our imagination haven't we?
I want to know who exactly these celebrities are to begin with. Why, if there's going to be celebrity reality tv can't they find someone worty of our attention? There's nothing worse than seeing someone on tv acclaimed as a celebrity and you have no idea how they got to that staus in the first place

The price of death

October 9th 2006 00:09
In my short time on this planet I have seen death come into my life in many different ways and has affected me on many different levels. Ther have been times that I have been prepared for the worst before it happened and wept bitterly despite my best preparations and there have been times when it has drained me instantaneously of my own life when it is unexpected, leaving me to ponder how life can be for some of us so nasty brutish and short. Death has touched me in such a way that I have learned not to take anybody for granted. When my cousin died 15 years ago in his (and my) teenage years from a biking accident I mourned not only for the fact that he died, I had regretted that I had the chance to see him a couple of days before the accident and I chose not to on the premise that I'd see him next time. There wasn't to be a next time.
I can't tell anybody what is more difficult ; watching someone die from a terminal illness or the shock of sudden death. In one year I had three relatives die by someone else's hand. Even though it has been some years now, there was the feeling that my world had somehow grown smaller and just that little bit colder with each of their untimely passings. No matter how many years may pass it still hurts to lose what was, only to leave what could have been or should have been.
The ones that hurt the most are the ones that just leave you staggered and thinking "why?" Last year one of my good friends decided to end his own life by gassing himself and overdosing on heroin because he felt his life was a "failure". He was a successful businessman who just like the rest of us had a past. It was a past that he just couldn't overcome. I remember watching him get beaten by "bullies" who were students in authority at school, and not being able to do a thing about it due to a "code of silence" apparently upheld by students. he and I paid a tremendous price for that as word got out to administration what had happened and our ostracism followed

To my surprise on the news the other night, there was a politician who was recommending that all students be forced to stay on to year 12. I have an issue with that mainly because not only was it not even well thought out but because it was just wrong. Did it ever occur to this politician that not everyone is cut out for acadamia? I had the experience of having one of my good friends drop out of high school after year 8. Yes, year 8. He couldn't have been more than 14 at the time but he left school to do what he wanted to do. Something that he was extremely good at and that was being a mechanic. he didn't need HSC for that, in fact he didn't even need his SC and you know what? he's doing just fine. Him leaving school early didn't make him a criminal or someone who cannot support himself and live on the dole. By no means whatsoever. Does anybody remember a man by the name of Einstein, you know the guy who came up with the whole E=mc2 thing. Did he finish high school? The answer to that is no, and you see where he got to? By no means do I advoate people just dropping out of school, but not everyone can be university material.
Mr Politician should just leave well enough alone instead of making things worse. People have different abilities and interests and believe it or not, some of us are just not smart enough to be degree holders. In fact I say that not all students are HSC material either( I know that because I'm one of them. If you saw my HSC results you'd be ashamed).
I want to take this to it's extreme, so bear with me, what if...what if all the students in school stayed to do HSC and went on to do University? It sounds good doesn't it? Okay so everybody now has a degree under their arm, where have all the manual labourers (ie street sweepers, garbage collectors, cleaners, construction workers, security guards etc etc) gone? well quite simply, there are none because once you have a degree you ain't sweeping a street or picking up garbage. So who will do it? I will leave that for you, dear reader to figure out.

What are we teaching our children?

October 7th 2006 00:20
Is this some kind of joke? Are these people sick? This current generation of leaders must have lost the plot where the raising of children are concerned. I am not that old but I know bull when I hear it being spouted. What has started in the good ol' US of A has become a worldwide phenomena, and of which I am referring to the non corporal punishment of our children and not only that there are others who have taken it a step further. Let me start with corporal punishment. I have absolutely no problem with giving my own child a clip behind the ear if I believe that all other options have failed. Have people forgotten the biblical (gasp! shock! horror! he's not bringing religion into this is he?) principle of "spare the rod and spoil the child? Some may say that there are better ways of dealing with children like talking to them politely and asking them to behave. Okay fine, it may (operative word may) work the first time but when the child does it the third fourth fifth time and you keep talking and the child doesn't listen. You know what that tells the child "Hey this is great! I can do all of this cool stuff like beating on other kids and burning down the house and all mommy can say is 'Now son you've been very bad.' " Does anybody really think that kids are so stupid that they're not actually going to pick up on the fact that parents can't even discpline their own children without authorities getting involved? There's something parents want hanging over their heads, their own children threatening them to take them to the police over something parents, in my mind, should have the authority to do. It will get to the stage where parents won't even be able to scowl at their children because someone may fear it might damage them permanently.
Speaking of that lets go from the ridiculous to the sublime. In the same country that says it's the leader of the free world, teachers cannot even use a red pen to mark tests because some person said it would do damage to the child's esteem. Where do these people come from? Straight from the school of Dr. Spock who has probably done more to in terms of making a mess of parenting than anyone else. The whole red pen issue makes no difference because the grade is still going to be the same. I wouldn't be surprised if one day the purple pen which I believe is now the pen of choice to mark papers will one day become the "red pen" of the future.
Now my real pet peeve is set for the lady in England who wanted teachers to stop telling students they've failed and become politically correct and say some along the lines of "almost pass" so they can feel better about themselves. My dear, failure is failure. If you get less than 50% on any standard test you've failed. Period. I have to ask what happens when these poor hapless students who don't know "failure" as such go out into the real world? Who is going to shield them from this new experience? When they get to University are they going to be told the same thing? No they won't! Lets start to teach our children the facts like life is a struggle and you will fail at times. Life is about finding inner strength and courage in the face of adversity, and the way things are headed we are going to turn out a society of people who are going to be fundamentally weak and not prepared for the realities of life. May God help us all.

The non news of the day

October 6th 2006 00:39
I don't know about anybody else but when I want to watch news I actually want to see real news. By that I want to see what important is going on in the world. I want to know if there's a man roaming around my areas chopping up people. Not only because I want to keep my family safe but there are some neighbours I'd just love to share with him.
I have over the past few weeks seen some items on the news that aren't even close to news. Personally, I don't give a hoot if Prince William opened a wing of a hospital in Britain or is going to join the army. I don't care. I really don't. Would the media please find me some news that is worthy of airtime instead of telling me that someone has found the missing "a" from when Neil Armstrong supposedly said "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". Well, whoop de doo, he was Australian too! Another crown in our jewel.
I understand that some days are kind of slow, but seeing a model fall on a cat walk surely can't be news, can it? News isn't, in my opinion, supposed to be really that entertaining. Have the newsrooms of today lost their way? One station says "If a big story is breaking...we're there!" Well, good! But also should add "We're ther too with largely unimportant pieces of rubbish that should only be shown on light entertainment programmes. Take that Funniest Home Videos
