Balotelli's Big Week
We all knew Mario Balotelli had a tendency to make news out of nothing and this week that once again jumped into the forefront of everyone's mind. First of all, it was announced that the Italian was to be responsible for arranging Manchester City's Christmas party.
Then, early on Saturday morning he chose to set fireworks off in his bedroom, burning part of his house down. He chose not to remain outside like the fire crew suggested and ran back inside to grab what was reported as a large amount of cash and a briefcase.
The following day he played in the Manchester derby, and after scoring the opening goal, decided not to celebrate but instead turned around to face his own team, lifted his team shirt over his head to reveal another t-shirt which simply read "Why Always Me?"
Just to cap off a sensational weekend of Balotelli news, he then spent Monday driving around Manchester in his Bentley with the roof down, high fiving Man City fans. All this before ironically posing with and promoting a fireworks safety poster ahead of Firework night.

City's big week
We've all heard it by now; Manchester City, the "noisy neighbours", beat Manchester United 6-1 at Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson went on to call it his worst day at the club since he took over 25 years ago. It was a warning shot to United, and they do have a lot of ground to make up now, but the season is still far from over. The big result will mean very little if City can't grind out results in untidy games at the end of the season, something United specialise in.

Vidic quits Serbia
More Manchester based news now in that United defender Nemanja Vidic has called time on his international career with Serbia. The defender said that he felt many people had been criticising his attitude towards the national team and that he felt it was unfair and therefore didn't want to continue anymore. Your opinions? Was Vidic Justified? I never noticed much criticism myself, but then again, I don't read Serbian newspapers.

Saturday's Story

Penalty Protest
You know when a penalty is awarded, the defensive team will always protest. No matter how stone wall the penalty may be, there will also always be an argument to go along with it.

Sometimes players protest the referee for, waving arms about like a madman, screaming and spitting in that poor individuals face until he gives in. Which, proudly enough, he never does. And fair play to referees for that.

This story, however, is something completely new to fans and the referee alike. Something that very few people would have expected to happen.

During a game in Romania's top flight, Liga 1, between Vointa Sibiu and Petrolul, the referee pointed to the spot for what he seemed to think was a perfectly valid penalty.

Visitors Vointa Sibiu, who had conceded the penalty, were outraged, certain that the referee had made a mistake. Especially given that the penalty also cost them their second red card of the match. A match which they were already 3-1 down in. So one can excuse them for being a bit highly strung.

The outraged team decided that protesting the referee wasn't enough anymore, and they therefore needed to take action. Fed up, worn out and angry at the officiating in the game, the last 8 outfield players Vointa had on the pitch marched off to the dressing room.

Despite the mass walkout, the referee ordered that the penalty still be taken, leaving just the Vointa goalkeeper to face his opposition.

Eventually, deciding to join his team mates, the goalkeeper, Remus Danalache, refused to play on and turned his back to the penalty taker.

Facing the back of the net and the fans behind it - who had probably never seen anything like this before - Danalache stayed still until the shot rattled into the back of the net.

Having lost complete control of the game but still determined to stand firm in his decision, the referee asked for the penalty to be retaken.

This time Danalache turned around to face his opponent, although his decision to quit playing stood. As the penalty taker once again stepped up and hit his shot into the corner of the net, Danalache remained stuck to the spot not moving a muscle.

It wasn't that he couldn't save the penalty, he simply didn't want to. Carrying on his protest he refused to keep playing the game.

The goal meant Petrolul wrapped up a 4-1 victory, leaving Vointa fans even more unhappy no doubt.

However, not long after the game was played, it was announced that the referee responsible had been banned for 6 months because of poor performance.

Tuesday's Tidbits

Promotion & Relegation scrapped?
In one word: No. The idea is about as smart as the Premier League's 39th game, and luckily for us fans it has about the same chance of taking off too. Sir Alex Ferguson has already branded the idea "suicide", while Wigan Athletic chariman Dave Whelan has admitted he'd pull his team out of the Premier League were the idea to come through. Don't worry though, it won't. You can hold me to that.

Gallas Gunners Return
Perhaps it slipped the attention of a few fans, given that it's not going to be relevant to everyone, but Spurs defender William Gallas was recently a part of a small Arsenal reunion. Having moved around London more than your generic underground train, Gallas is currently sitting at White Hart Lane as a Spurs players, but his Arsenal roots haven't been completely forgotten as he returned to watch the match against Sunderland with old friends Robert Pires and Bacary Sagna. Oh, and the Gunnersaurus, whatever that is.

Olympic Stadium saga
Remember the good old days when the word 'saga' simply reminded the public of the Star Wars films and very little else? Well those days are gone for sure, as too many problems rumble on in football now labelling themselves 'Sagas'. The latest in this installment? West Ham's deal has collapsed, Spurs have pulled out of the matter all together and Leyton Orient have only just submitted a bid to take it over. This one could be far from over still.

Return of David Beckham
Let's face it, he never really went away did he? It's tough watching him try to keep playing at his grand old age, but whatever your thoughts on this, the man must be respected as an England legend. His playing career seems to be rumbling into one grand finale of him playing at the Olympics for Team GB as one of the 3 exception players allowed over 23 years old. To do this he needs to keep match fit, and the latest rumours are that advanced talks at PSG will see him in Paris before long.

Suarez vs Evra becomes a 'thing'
Did the Premier League really need any more bad press? After the always feisty game between Liverpool and Manchester United, Patrice Evra came out to suggest that he had been subject to racial taunts from Liverpool striker Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan strongly denies this, as you'd expect most players to. It's simply become routine how these sorts of tussles take over the news in a midweek gap between league fixtures. There's no real way to tell who's telling the truth on this one, with no on pitch microphones. We'll just have to hope the FA and Premier League deal with it sensibly, behind closed doors, rather than burdening the whole country with the problem.

The return of Wayne Rooney
Over the first five games of the new season, Wayne Rooney scored 9 goals in his first 5 Premier League games. A feat never achieved before.
